Holy... I started watching this on my phone and immediately paused it, switched to a TV with a proper surround system to appreciate it. The new mic -- absolutely worth it. Who needs pedal cam when you have pedal audio? Best, most-engaging onboard of the season by a mile. Loved it.
That’s blow off valve my friend wastegate releases the excess pressure pre turbo mainly they’re put back into the exhaust which is a recirculating wastegate and you won’t hear much/if any noise from it but sometimes you have what’s called a screamer or dump pipe that dumps the air and makes the screaming sound on the other hand the blow off valve releases the air built up in the turbo when you come off throttle hence the chirping sounds sorry for the rant just trying to explain as simple and best I can
@@NeFjuS superchargers don’t require wastegates as they’re driven by the crank not exhaust gases it’s essentially a naturally aspirated engine with more air capacity
Nice correction on the 3rd lap jump, very well caught 😅. You should wear a heart rate monitor and overlay the bpm, I’d bet it was pretty raised on that final lap. (I wore a heart rate monitor whilst rally navigating for a mate, had spike from 120bpm immediately to 217bpm on one very close oh my f#@k moment)
It's not the wastegate as that is exhaust side, the sound is from the compressor side and it's turbo flutter/surge, as he lifts off the throttle boost pressure is still high but flow into the engine is reduced so the surge happens.
What a sublime and visceral experience you had! Being able top see the front wheels all the time makes a huge difference. Your ability to adapt is perfect. Thanks Misha!!
Wild! I’ve driven an Atom on the racetrack here in Canada (Ecotec engine) and it was intense…could not imagine just hopping into an Atom and going for a Ring lap! I experienced the helmet issue also, but not at those speeds ;) As always, Misha, glad you’ve made it through safely. I’d love to see someone hand you the keys to a Light Car Company Rocket or an early Lotus 7. Great content and storytelling as always 😊
I drove a none-supercharged Ariel Atom around Oulton Park. It was visceral to say the least! I remember aiming at “the tree” over the crest just after druids and thinking it was absolute lunacy! No driver aids + cold tyres and brakes certainly sharpens the senses!!
The clear audio was great to hear the nuances of some of your finer control in the tricky corners. Dancing the throttle and the turbo talking to you. But I am super happy you included the gopro mic only.. as it truly gives perspective to the speeds, and wind noise that I am sure was more like what you were hearing in the helmet at high speeds. Another excellent video Thanks Misha!
What we have here, ladies and gentlemen, is the entire Parseltongue dictionary recited both forwards AND backwards. Truly astonishing, the work you've done with this ancient language. The community owes you its praissssssssssssssssss ssssssss ss s se.
i loved the audio with the more expensive mic, it blocks the wind as if its nothing(assuming it hasn;'t been done in post), not to mention the details it give in lows, mids and highs on all fronts
Oh that was so good. The Atom was what I wanted on the Misha bucket list. Ariel 4 too, I think, which apparently means better cornering. Super car. Super drive. Thank you.
yep -not going to rush this one Misha. This 22:39 needs to be properly studied - not often that we get to see this car, and getting ragged . love the engine overboost noises. big thanks
The mic is definitely worth it, the other lap with the standard mic was mostly variations of whoosh sounds from the turbo or the wind. :P And it dang it looks so fast! no idea what speed it actually is, but it looks almost fast forwarded in places, and still a line of Porsches went by, makes ya realize just how quick those Porches go. Not that I should be shocked about it, the one time I got to visit the Nürburgring, we went to look at the track nearby the diner where you can turn off the track, the bit you always say to be careful in case of emergency vehicles pulling onto track there, and watching the corners there my heart was in my throat watching some of the Porsches as they entered corners at a speed that almost didn't make sense to my brain, and for some reason it was only the Porsches I reacted to with amazement at the speed. (I was there in 2016, so might have been different then which cars were popular on track.) Also, I feel almost every car you're driving recently is RHD, just how many Brits are over there with their cars? Soon you'll be so used to RHD you start messing up in LHD cars as you're not used to them. :P And I wonder how different the Ariel Atom V8 would be, is it slower due to weight despite more power? less agile? or is it a monster? I'd say hope someone brings one for you to test, but you seemed almost nervous about this one? Though maybe that could change with a mirror mod, to give more confidence in what's going on around you.
The Atom4 is the softer version of the Atom3, and I love my 3. I actually like it more. Car was a handful before I got it aligned properly, but now it's by far the most enjoyable car I own on the track.
The supercharger noise almost gives it another dimension. Because you can actually hear your throttle position based on the blow-off noises and the fluttering of the valve when not giving full throttle. And great vid as always Misha!
It's turbo flutter not the blow off valve fluttering, the car does have a blow off valve but the main sound you are hearing is turbo flutter then a slight delay before the blow off valve opens.
I drove few laps in a 2.0 supercharged atom few years back on old airbase made racetrack. It was a mind blowing experience, and would love to buy one someday.
5:07 It sounds like sometimes the turbo sees some slight compressor surge under load (fluttering in mid RPM while not lifting) while accelerating from lower gears. Maybe the boost targets are a bit too high? It may not be audible in a helmet but I'd check it. Better safe than sorry.
Exactly that, I picked up on it straight away, to me sounded like a slight air leak in the system but def surging! , also it sounds like the boost weans right off from say 4k to the shift point. 15. 38 - 15.42 is best example of surging It didn't seem that quick, when you consider power to weight as well.

Was hoping to bring it back to NZ but ended up selling it (for £2000 more than I paid for it due to the long wait list). That was the most epic video I’ve seen you do for a while Misha. Not that I haven’t enjoyed all the other ones but I’ve got to say this was just amazing 👍.
These cars are intimidating. I do drive an Atom 2 300 and it took me a couple of track days to be able to wide open throttle... now I just want more (do have around 360hp now). This second lap feels so much faster than the first one too, nice job !
what an amazing Sound! Excellent Job!! You found the right spot to put in the Mic ;-) 👍🏻 And good driving also of course ;) must be a very cool feeling topless :D
Even though the video is blurry due to vibration, the Ariel Atom was better at showing the correct line due to being open wheel. You should consider a slower lap with voiceover talking through the wet & dry lines and turn in points. Getting rid of the vibration would be nice, it if is even possible. These were awesome laps!
Im not a fan of fast streetbikes, and my only real experience was on two sportbikes from the late 1980's. My brothers had a "88" GSX-R750 and the other brother's was a "87" GSX-R 1100. Both were 🚀's , especially since my experience before that was only on a Yamaha RD 400 2stroker and a Gs 550 Suzuki. But that 1100 would come up so easily & so freaking quickly into a wheelie it was terrifying. Especially when its above speeds of 90mph !! Anyways I felt with my addiction to speed, I was best left to just driving cars. I do dream of and miss that sense of speed those sportbikes I've riden gave me back then. Id imagine a Ariel atom would scracth that itch and feed that sense of speed jones very well !! Nothing like being out there in the elements . Even with the top out of my C7 vette the senses are in overload. Especially all the smells and the extra sounds, but that feeling of the air being ripped around you at speed is , just freaking awesome ! I need me some of that now!! 🤤🏎_____💨😁!!
Can I say. One hell of a drive 👌🏿👌🏿. And let's all agree that Porsche gt2 and GT3 models. Are made for the track. Super super fast stock. My my my. I can't believe it, keeped up. With it the Atom. The blow of sound🥺🥺🥺 I'm in love.
Misha, I will never get tried of saying this you are the DON on the Ring. I need to bring my Evo 9 fully forged you will love it it doesn’t matter if you blow it up
You can tell Misha was targeting the apexes with those open wheels in the last lap. I think about 10 more laps with this thing and it'd be something pretty. Off to see if Misha has done this in a Caterham 7. (Hope I hope I hope) ....
Firstly, much respect on showing us your mistakes (driver excuses) and keeping it real. Secondly, hearing the TC duty-cycle through a turbo is a first for me, sounded awesome and lastly, is a request/idea, I and i'm sure many others would love to see a collaboration with yourself and Monky London, heard rumours that he is touring Europe in a drift series this year.
Hey, crazy car and maybe it's just me, but at some points it was difficult "feeling" the speed. I am not sure whether it is really feasable, but maybe for similar situations where there is nowhere to mount a camera a digital solution could be used? I have seen some GPS speedos, but I am not sure about their accuracy and later ability to be matched to the footage. Again, likely just a weird idea from a backseat gamer right here. :D Thanks for amazing content, mic difference is impressive.
Yes, speedometer is always an important feature in my videos, unfortunately here it was very hars to stick a GoPro next to it and I only had 1 cage mount with me that day :(
The ease with which those 911's overtake this Atom driven by Misha shows that this car is really limited by how far the driver is willing to go. There's no systems allowing you to drive faster than you're comfortable with.. unlike them Porsche's which basically hide the fact you're closer to the edge than you'd think..
I think that there was no better place to put the GoPro than right next to the intake. Genuinely awesome experience just to watch. Can’t imagine being in the car
never had a ride in one of these, but in a copy of a Lotus Super Seven, which is kind of the same idea, that was both the most scary ride ive ever done, and probably one of the best ones aswell.
