sameeeeee. i learned violin for 3 years but now its been 4 years since i played it (my violin's e string broke along with its bridge) and i really want to learn it so now... i'm begging my mum and dad haha
How to remember the EGBDF "Every good burger deserves fries" my music teacher taught us that, or you can make up your own, one of the students came up with one I cant quite remember we were learning recorder but it's similar! Also the yellow ones as "Put you FACE in the space"- Music teacher. Hope that helped anyone lol
Oh, my music teacher taught us "every grizzly bear deserves fish" and "notes on the space spell face" but I got a new music teacher and she said that she would say "every Gucci bag design flash" or smth haha
I needed this, I played violin for years but was too ashamed to ask which is which, I typically made my teacher write it down on the music sheet, I really needed that, it’ll make everything much more easier rather than relying on the sound
Thank you so much I have felt so dumb trying to delineate which notes you play on which string and no one I found so far actually went over that and if they did they didnt show it like you did. THANK YOU!
You did an amazing job on this video. If you are not a teacher by trade.. .you should be. Amazing! Thank you so very much! God bless you and your family!
It's a finger pattern for violin playing in first position. All the space notes are either open strings ("0") or played with 2 fingers ("2"). So... the finger pattern needed to play the notes in the spaces (starting with open D), are: 0 2 0 2 0 2. etc... So when you identify a SPACE note, you also know that it will either be played as an open string (0) or 2nd finger (2)! All the line notes are either played with 1 finger or 3 fingers, so the pattern of line note fingerings (starting with the lowest line note, E) is : 1 3 1 3 1 etc.. So when you identify a LINE note, you also know that it will either be played with 1st finger or 3rd finger! Hope that helps!
Awesome, this is really informative and useful 😍 though I'm watching this lesson even I don't have a violin 😅 too pricey to buy one either its 2nd hand.. I wish I can buy and start to play 🙏💙
i think im stupid. i didnt get how i can press the strings by reading the notes. im clueless on how i can read it given that the violin only has 4 strings and the musical bar has 5 with additional lines below. i never learned how to read notes and im just relying on tablatures for acoustics, been playing for more than 10 yrs and currently considering playing the violin. anyone here who plays the guitar? when its open how will i position my fingers? on the guitar tab if its open then that specific note still marks a string but on this one it is inbetween the strings, what does it mean? edit: how do you determine the fret on violins?
It can be difficult to learn where to place your fingers since there are no frets on the violin! It may be helpful for you to mark your fingerboard with tape (I use non residue pinstripe tape from the auto store) or ask a teacher or friend to help you.
Absolute Violin beginner here. I am a bit confused. You put a 4 above the pinkie finger, but none of the notes that followed had a 4 assigned to them. Why is that?
Good observation and great question! The 4th finger (pinky) IS used on each string! But I didn’t include it in this video to avoid confusion or beginners. By now, you probably understand that when placed on the string, each finger raises the pitch by one note. If you use all four fingers (including the pinky), the string you are playing will sound the same as the next string! So, for example four fingers on the D string will sound as “A,” and four fingers on the A string will sound as “E.” Another reason that beginner violin music often does not include the fourth finger, is that the fourth finger tends to be the weakest and least experienced finger...especially for small children. However, you may be quite prepared to start using your fourth finger with intentional finger exercises and careful practice! Just be sure to keep your fingernails short enough so the very top of your fingers can press the strings down… and your fingers can stay curved. Good luck on your violin adventure! I hope that helps.
Hi! I dont get it and i need this for school! Im really sorry but can you please break down how to play the notes again? There are some notes not on there i think. Im not sure sorry! ❤❤
If you have “tape” on your violin, you just put your left hand fingertips on the tapes and press the string down firmly to the fingerboard. The note pattern on the G will be: G 1 2 3 Or “ G A B C” So after you play open G, if you place your first finger (pointer) on the first tape (the tape nearest to the scroll) on the G string, it becomes “A” and 2 fingers pressing down on the string (on the tapes) is “B”, and 3 fingers is “C.” This same concept works for all the strings. The notes and fingerings for each string: G A B C (G 1 2 3) D E F# G (D 1 2 3) A B C# D (A 1 2 3) E F# G# A (E 1 2 3) Hope that helps! Keep practicing! It will get easier!
i have been playing the viola for years and only just recently started playing the violin however, it can get confusing at times figuring out which notes are the open strings on the violin so this video has been really helpful!
I’m so glad! Yes, learning to read notes takes time and is difficult to master while you are also learning to play a new instrument! So much to think about!! Keep practicing!
I think you are asking about the open strings. Some notes require fingers pressed on the strings, so I labeled those with “finger numbers” “O” means “zero fingers” or Open strings! Hope that helps!
Great question! Major and minor tonalities are determined by the tonal resting tone. Since we are just naming all the notes and fingerings here, we can’t really determine what tonality is here.
That's how I learned it too... Or "every good boy deserves fudge." I like some of the new ones I've been hearing from my students hough too.. "Every Good Band Deserves Fans!"
Keep practicing! The more you look at the notes and take time to see the patterns and try to name them and play them, the easier it gets. But it takes lots of repetition over time, just like learning a new language. I recommend using a beginner sight reading book... or you can even try this fun online quiz to practice reading notes for violin: violin.school.nz/
I'm right there with you. I got my first violin for Christmas 2020. I can't make heads or tails of it yet. I'm sixty one and feeling like you might not be able to teach this old dog new tricks. Blessings
Good question! It IS confusing that there are four strings on the violin and five lines on the music. Musical notation was created for many instruments to read, so unfortunately, it does not really relate specifically to the fingers on the violin strings. Tablature might be what you are thinking of. Guitar players often read tablature which is literally a picture of the strings and where to place your fingers on the strings. It looks a lot like musical notation, but it actually correlates with the strings. If you really want to learn to read the notes, first you need to practice identifying the names of the notes on the musical staff. Then, using the violin strings and fingerings (The numbers written above the notes in my video) you can also learn how to play each note on the violin! It is a complicated process! But learning to read music is definitely worth your time! Keep practicing, don’t give up!
The lines of the musical staff show the pitch, not just the strings. Each of the four strings of the violin has many notes that it can play! In the video I try to show clearly what notes on the staff can be played on each string.
Thank you for this!! Haven’t played in over 5 years but I am determined to start again!!❤️🙌🏽

Ohhh now I understand I used to learn songs that on the notes it shows what string to play and what position and now I can learn without the colors.
This was very helpful!!! I could not find the pattern you were mentioning at the end with 0/2/0/2
It's a finger pattern for violin playing in first position.
All the space notes are either open strings ("0") or played with 2 fingers ("2"). So... the finger pattern needed to play the notes in the spaces (starting with open D), are:
0 2 0 2 0 2. etc...

Violin is written in treble clef, but viola is written in Alto clef! 🎼
