Learn to Read Notes (for Viola) in Less than 5 Minutes
Using mnemonics like EGBDF and FACE might be helpful for total beginners, but I suggest you stop using them at some point; otherwise, you'll find yourself mumbling "EGBDF FACE" forever. One major problem with relying on note names like EGBDF and FACE is that their functions change based on the key signature. For instance, E is the root in E major but the third in C major. In my opinion, what's more important than the names of the notes are the intervals and functional names, especially when you read music note after note. I know it's too complex for beginners but functions really describes the sound that you hear. Major third makes a bright sound, Fifth makes a strong sound, Seventh makes sound that wants resolution. Understanding these intervals and functions makes it easier to read music and understand the relationships between notes. When playing the violin, these intervals and functions translate directly to finger positions. For example, when you play B on the second string using your index finger, the same finger on the first string can play a fifth above, and your pinky on the first string plays the octave. Once you get used to the combination of key, intervals, and functions, reading music and finding the correct finger positions becomes much easier. Some times you don't even have to read it because you know the sound you want to play that directly dictates intervals. This is a huge leap from counting E,G,B,D,F. Violin strings are intentionally tuned a fifth apart (GDAE). This means that once you learn the combination, you can play the same way on any string. For that matter, viola and cello are also tuned a fifth apart (CGDA). I'm not a professional violinist, but this is what I've learned. Hopefully, it makes sense for other beginner violinists.
Finger numbers😂
Solfège!
I've been struggling to understand how to read the notes for SO. LONG. Thank you so much for this, it has truly helped wonders and was so, so clear!
I’m so glad to know that it was helpful! Keep practicing!
Thank you so much I have felt so dumb trying to delineate which notes you play on which string and no one I found so far actually went over that and if they did they didnt show it like you did. THANK YOU!
So happy to know that this helped you!
Im getting my first cello soon
Hope you and your cello keep making music together forever!
@@angelacorbin2400 thank you so much, I'm currently taking lessons
thanks, this helped me a ton in so little time.
Glad to hear it!
this would have been much nicer without the weird synth music. Why did you not use the sounds of the viola to match what was being shown?
Great idea! Maybe my next video? Thank you!
Thank you for this video! I have played piano for 40 years, and just started playing viola after my boys joined orchestra. One plays violin and the other cello. It has been difficult to jump from treble to alto clef, but this video has helped tremendously! Thank you again!!
Isn’t it exciting to watch your children become musicians too? So happy you are enjoying making music in new ways!
What would be the next step?
Get a violin! 🎻 Practice identifying and playing each string on your violin!
THANKS ❤
I go in 2grade and my name is gracelynn
Hi Gracelynn! 🎻💙💛
Love you miss corbin
Thank you very much I tuned my violin❤
Thank you so much I have a music test tommorow and this helped me a LOT
Ciao😊
Tysm. Im going to share this with anybody who ever asks me how to read music for violin. You're an excellent teacher!
Hi miss Corbin
Good bless you i so needed this!
So beautiful.... it took me back in time.. Congratulations ! I want to hear more!
❤❤❤
Hi miss Corbin
Why finger 2 is not there?
Poo
❤
Thank you. Great.
i have been playing the viola for years and only just recently started playing the violin however, it can get confusing at times figuring out which notes are the open strings on the violin so this video has been really helpful!
I’m so glad! Yes, learning to read notes takes time and is difficult to master while you are also learning to play a new instrument! So much to think about!! Keep practicing!
Hi! I dont get it and i need this for school! Im really sorry but can you please break down how to play the notes again? There are some notes not on there i think. Im not sure sorry! ❤❤
If you have “tape” on your violin, you just put your left hand fingertips on the tapes and press the string down firmly to the fingerboard. The note pattern on the G will be: G 1 2 3 Or “ G A B C” So after you play open G, if you place your first finger (pointer) on the first tape (the tape nearest to the scroll) on the G string, it becomes “A” and 2 fingers pressing down on the string (on the tapes) is “B”, and 3 fingers is “C.” This same concept works for all the strings. The notes and fingerings for each string: G A B C (G 1 2 3) D E F# G (D 1 2 3) A B C# D (A 1 2 3) E F# G# A (E 1 2 3) Hope that helps! Keep practicing! It will get easier!
Is there a place where I can get the pdf of this to purchase or to have? I'm a visual person and need tangible notes lol.
his C is B he is confused
Helpful coming from alto clef for the viola.
Super film ! :)
Thankyou so much!! I've been struggling in learning the music sheet, you really help me! Thanks!! 😭😭
i play as 2nd principal violin in the first row at manhattan school of music repertory orchestra. and right now i hear mice squeaking. i thought this was a joke at first no offense
These are public school elementary students who just started playing (and only have class about 20 minutes a week). ❤️😉🎻 Since I was stuck home with Covid, I recorded the piano accompaniment on my home keyboard with a squeaky pedal. Of course you can hear string instrument squeaks in beginners, but if you listen closely, you can also hear the squeaky piano pedal.
Notes made simple !!!
Thank you Angela, a really fun and informative way to learn, Top vid
Wow how helpful you make it seem like fun,you should come out with a book
Viola gang!
I used to play the cello for 14 years and randomly forgot. this was more helpful than all of those lessons
Phenomenal explanation. Thank you!
OH MY GOODNESS so basically I decided to join orchestra class and I’m kinda lost and confused cuz idk how to read sheet music BUT THIS SAVED MY LIFE I’m not exaggerating omg tyyy
I am SO glad you decided to join Orchestra class!! And I'm so glad that this helped you!! It takes time to learn the skills in Orchestra, playing, reading, keeping up. You can do it!! Keep making your music!
@@angelacorbin2400 Yesss thank youuu
So helpful! Thank you so much! Especially with the hand drawing, it was an "aha" moment for me when I finally realized that it's not as hard and overwhelming as I thought 😂
I am so happy to hear that this was helpful for you!! Thank you for sharing. I love those AHA moments when the world gets a little less overwhelming. :)
Ciao collega cellista😊
Wat voor sleutel is dat? Ik ken alleen de g sleutel en de f sleutel.
I loved this so much. I was totally counting outloud with them. I find it to be extremely calming. What a surprise that music (even in this form) has a calming effect. I do think it's more fun to play this kind of oral, collective music with kids this age. Can I come to your classroom, please, Mrs. Corbin? I also love that we end with a long: SHHHHH. (also lets play this game at Family Christmas? ok?)
what is rosin do you mean resin
rosin is the substance that orchestra players (like viola and cello) use to make the strings on their bow slick enough to play with.
@@-bone_collector-not slick, it makes the strings sticky
Also it IS made out of tree resin. It just is a little bit different so we call it rosin
@definitelynotlikhin9996 thank you
💋
GREAT VIDEO, thank you for doing this way for us . BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great job Molly!
Man, I wish school was like this. Great work 👍*
