    It’s important for all educators to be thinking about how AI fits into their teaching and research in the near term (ie next semester or maybe even next year). We should be asking “how can AI help me improve student outcomes” and “how can I use AI to create new knowledge?” But even more importantly, we need to look at how the tech is going to transform education entirely, as the “long term” in AI time is one to two years. To do this, we might want to think about how AI fits into other major trends in AI. Here’s three to consider:
    1. Demand for online learning is off the charts. At my institution, if we have 10 online and 10 in person sections of a course, all the online sections fill before a single in person one does. The limits on offering these courses is currently instructor availability. AI could potentially be used in lieu of instructors (particularly adjuncts) in the near future.
    2. Skepticism about the economic and social value of higher ed is higher than it’s been in my lifetime. Does emerging AI present an opportunity for an entrepreneurial “alternative credentialing” mechanism?
    3. The “enrollment cliff” is upon us and we’re likely to see a number of colleges close. How will these “desperate times” create an opening for rethinking higher ed using the emerging tech?

    • @sovorel-EDU
      @sovorel-EDU  3 дні тому +7

      Very excellent points, Jamie. I totally agree with everything you highlighted. Academic leadership must be very explicit that no instructor can simply ignore the power and importance of this new AI technology. The realities of social and economic change are upon us (this is why economic shake-up is one of my predictions). We must be proactive in all of this to remain relevant and ensure that we are leading the way into this new future. I plan on making more videos that address these issues. I greatly appreciate your posting of this.

    I got an idea! Universities are hugely threatened by AI, because firstly, a narrow career path will become increasingly obsolete, and secondly AI can (at least soon) replace the need for universities and provide personalized education to students for a fraction of the cost.

      @@Anders01 you bring up an important aspect regarding "a narrow carreer path" becoming more and more obsolete. I agree. I think that people will need a greater bredth of skills because AI will be able to help people do more. I think we will still need universities because a good education is much more than just knowledge transfer.

    Real time tutoring became a thing with gemini 2 live. My daughter was working on math problems in khan academy and had gemini watching the screen. It was able to follow along and be helpful occasionally. It's not perfect but it's a big deal for education as it gets better.

      Agreed. Gemini 2 is very powerful on a multiple of levels. AI now offers so much agency to students it is unbelievable. We in academia must work to fully develop students' AI Literacy so that they can use AI to become lifelong learners. Thank you for sharing, Ian. It is so much more impactful when we hear a personal story to go along with all of this.

    Thanks Brent for your wonderful predictions. Consider there is a new educational model I'll call AI centric schools Alpha school, IMO, would fit into this model. My prediction is a decline in traditional educational models where everyone is learning the same thing, at the same time, with the same tests, typically with desks in rows etc...this seems to still be the lower ed model in many states , to maybe a newer AI guided teaching and learning model like Alpha.

    • @sovorel-EDU

      Hi Rox, it's great to see you and your comments. Yes, I am seeing more and more states start to pilot schools where at least a portion of the school time is facilitated via AI interaction. I think this can be a powerful way to help all students advance and reach greater heights. Great teachers/faculty still need to be the subject matter experts there and the very important social learning opportunities must still remain, but so much more can be accomplished with AI. We shall see what 2025 brings and if society/academia embraces this more. As always, thank you for your great insides, Rox.

    One point to add for predictions, might be the consciousness for AI, I have never seen anyone describe it properly apart from cell simulation, for the system to be conscious, the system requires to estimate the distances between sensors i.e. the system requires to predict it's body as opposed to other objects, thereby having thoughts about it's place in the world as opposed to purpose we all live by where the plants and minerals take the lead

    • @sovorel-EDU
      @sovorel-EDU  3 дні тому +7

      Oh wow, that is a powerful one, Inan. I personally think that in order for an AI to achieve consciousness, it will need to have embodiment, which we will start to have with AI-infused robots. Then, I think it will need to have some sort of long-term memory, which I also talk about in this video. The ability to reflect and have personal goals are other aspects that I think will be needed for consciousness to be a thing. I think that is similar to your description of "...thereby having thoughts about it's place in the world." I might make a video on its own about such a powerful and deep subject matter. Thank you for your post, Inan.

    I agree with your list of predictions (especially "AI Agents"). I'd agree that AI generated video is going to explode (you can see these on UA-cam already), I really think it is just one element underneath AI generated "storytelling" (what you called dynamic content) - generation of video, audio, text presentations, and "the delivery" of that content. The only comment I'd make is that although the Chinese (and the US and Europe) are certainly doing great work with AI robotics, it's really the work coming out of Japanese companies that's truly amazing (I'm looking forward to see what comes out of CES 2025).

      Hi, Roman. I agree that Japan has been a big leader in robots for a long time and still holds the title for most robots. I believe, however, that China is now a market leader dealing with the production of robots. Although I hold Japanese technology in high regard, I think most of the competition is coming from China, at least for now. I will keep an eye out for Japanese robot companies in the coming year, however, so thank you for reminding me of their importance.

    These predictions for 2025 mostly have to do with acceptance? ‘Accept that AI is taking over as soon as 2025…’ People are going to accept how useful an AI Agent in your packet is. Sovorel-EDU tells us people are going to accept that they need to learn how to use AI to get ahead at work. He also briefly points out that people are going to lose their jobs.
    ‘So, that is why you need to learn AI, and I thought I just needed to learn how to use AI, so I could find my way home.??’
    I thought I heard him say that he wasn’t going to say much about AGI because that is not going to happen…in 2025…or ever.??
    ‘If AGI is a thinking computer, then we are already there.??’
    Waight didn’t that start with the calculator.
    ‘I’m sore not as smart as a calculator…’
    A calculator with memory, amazing, or was that AI with unlimited memory???

      Hi, John. Thank you for posting. Yes, I do think there will be more and more acceptance of AI as a useful tool. Right now, many people use AI at work but are still not fully comfortable telling their bosses about it. I think this will change in 2025 as AI becomes a more accepted aspect of society. There will still be some who resist and aren't comfortable with it for several different reasons, but a majority will see AI as a useful tool at work and beyond. 20 or so years from now our computational devices will be about 1 billion times faster.
    AI will have evolved into something more than LLM's. Robots will be common place.
    Therefore...
    Labor needs a much better deal.
    Same money, less working hours per day.
    Overtime paid on the day! If those in power do this we could allow an overtime rate of 1.25 per hour up to 55 hours per week. After that... double time.
    A six hour workday would allow older people to participate in the workplace, thereby helping the safety-net systems maintain viability, and help with labor shortages.
    This action would also help maintain growing investment accounts... lowering capital cost.

      @sovorel-EDU  2 дні тому +6

      @@cordfortina9073 I think we will decide to keep humans-in-the-loop on many levels to ensure human oversight and perspectives. I also think that learning will still have and need humans. Sure, AI and robots can go a long way to enhance learning, but through a shared process. Here is a video I made about that: "Since We Have AI Are Teachers Obsolete?" ua-cam.com/video/8yDpvQmgwok/v-deo.html I also think that there will still be roles where humans will want other humans to conduct: child care, religious services, general leadership positions, multiple political positions, some scientist positions, and some therapist/doctor positons. It isn't that robots/AI won't be able to do these things, I think society will still want humans either doing these things or wanting humans to be part of the process.

      Hi Morris, thank you for posting. We all need to be lifelong learners in that this technology is constantly improving with new things, processes, and implementations of AI happening all the time. Things you can do are subscribe to this channel and watch the many videos about AI, buy books and read about different aspects of AI, being part of a community of practice (like this comment section) where you can interact and ask questions, attend conferences about AI in your field, and keep reading new updates about AI. We are in this together.

      @Recuper8 3 дні тому +7

      Ask AI how to learn AI. For example, you could go to chatgpt and have a conversation about what your goals/interests are in the field. Then ask it to do a search based off of your conversation to recommend resources for you to watch/study. The responses aren't comprehensive, so you'll need to ask it for resources multiple times. In other words, you can use AI to assemble a learning curriculum for you.

    How about an AI Agent for mathematics faculty (or whichever field) that can generate video content based on what you ask it? Then the faculty could share that video with their students. Or going one step further, how about if students ask the AI Agent themselves? University faculty must be brought onboard to this AI transformation or it's going to be a bumpy ride for its implementation in academia. Thus, the pie has to be sweetened for faculty; they must see some benefit from AI because they are already apprehensive about losing their jobs to it.

      I think it's a race by remaining current on 'today's' technology. By staying current, 'you' have a chance of remaining relevant. That is until 'artificial' super intelligence arrives - in which case all bets are off. In other words, there's a mysterious time window of human relevancy in terms of traditionally defined productivity. Right now we have tools, agents will be like assistants, AGI will be a worthy companion, super intelligence might be a benevolent or malevolent 'leader', the singularity will be akin to a god. So, the race is on - how much can 'you' get done in 'your' name before super intelligence arrives? 'That ' amount will be lower or higher dependent on how well 'you' apply 'today's' technology. That's my guess...

    • @ghartas123
      @ghartas123 3 дні тому +6

      @@Recuper8 Yep, I agree. From what I understand about the singularity is that AI recursively improves itself (not humans), over and over, until it reaches a point of God-like knowledge. I think the event that will make singularity happen is when AI is successfully married with quantum computing. The synergy of those two technologies will be the death knell of humanity as we know it. As you can tell, I am a pessimist about the future with AI.

    • @Recuper8
      @Recuper8 3 дні тому +9

      @@ghartas123 Yeah, well, you have good grounds to be pessimistic. / That pairing with quantum computing would indeed be a significant game changer. As I understand it, quantum computer is prone to making mistakes (it isn't dependable). However, it's possible that AGI will figure out what's wrong with our current approach and make it work...enter the singularity. Seriously though, I don't see any scenario where humanity could 'defeat' such a force/entity. So, if it doesn't ummm 'choose' to help us, yeah...we're done for. Maybe that idea of melding with it has some merit...if you can't beat them - join 'em. Not sure I, or many, would choose that route, but it might be an option besides annihilation. Personally, I think there's an element of Russian roulette with humans remaining at the helm too though. As you know, we've come to the brink of nuclear annihilation on more than one occasion. So, there's a risk either way. I'm too poor to build a sustainable bunker, so I'm just going to have to hope for the best. That's really all we have on this side, hope. ... Pandora's box has been opened. /// There's a theory that a quantum computer works because of the existence of a multi-verse - quantum entanglement with other errmm 'universes' where other quantum computers exist. If that's true, maybe there's a way to use quantum computing to figure out how humans on 'the other sides' managed to co-exist with a/the singularity. I don't know, it's hard to think about the singularity and fully functional quantum computing without delving into the realms of the metaphysical and science fiction. ... ... I think the aliens visiting from afar have ai generated lens covers over their eyes. The reason I believe this is because from 10 to 15 thousand year old vases in Egypt were formed by ai from non-terrestrial sources. In no way did humans make these highly technical perfection stone vases. This man "Sovorel" is speaking of glasses made tying us to our computers through ai. What would be the best ai generated ai tie for humans, ai generated contact lenses with extremely high resolution contact lenses that have infra-red and ultra-violet scenes we at present humans cannot see or sense. These lenses will have flow through vision and when the ai wishes to capture our attention the lense will have either directions to drive our vehicles, fly our planes, or offer vehicle information and location attributes we at present see in our machine instrument panels. We will need to be trained from an early age to communicate our wishes with our vehicles or machines. How we use mouses and cursors and buttons can all be put into our retina enhanced products. With window roll up or down buttons or door opening devices showing we will never be able to fly their craft to full performance.
