well, it is THE definition of true HEAVY METAL, together with the live version of sceeeeeeeeeaaaming for vengeance :) Judas Priest wrote the metal book :) now however there's a new definition and it's called "to the hellfire" by Lorna Shore, that has got averything that metal should be, insane drums, guitar and vocals :) can you MrsPenPal check that one out, if you dare, and please take the one take live version of the singer Will Ramos, he's got it on his youtube... you will be floored and your walls will be crushed :) and can you please check out that live version from judas priest?
Priest is such an experience! The whole band are treasures and Halford is an absolute gem of a human being! If you like this track, keep digging, it only gets better!
They were in their early 40s when they did this album. This is them saying.... oh you think we are old and lost a step... this is how you do Metal. Priest!!!!
When you come into painkiller as a non-heavy metal fan, you either love it or hate it, but in my opinion this is what the genre is all about. Electrifying and adrenaline-inducing fast paced music with a nearly inhuman precision. Halford is showcasing his power and range here, with a huge amount of distortion added to his high-pitched trademark screams. If you go back to the mid to late 70's, his vocals were just as high, but delivered more cleanly without the gruffness that he put on during the 80's. Check out his performance in Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver from Sad wings of destiny (1976), where he hits an astonishing G#5 as the highest note. I'd say stay clear of the 1975 live version, since he drops down one octave for whatever reason during the climax of the song.
Oh wow, MrsPenPal! Is that the most beautiful smile on the internet? I think it might be. I first saw Judas Priest in 1979 and they have remained one of my top 10 artists of all time. It's so cool to see young people discovering them and appreciating what they do.
I listened to my girl listen to all of those Elvis songs and now she pulls out a Judas Priest! I think I am in Love hahahahah Not sure you were ready for this LOL.... Maybe Breaking the Law would of been a better song to start with.
I always tell people that having PainKiller as the first time hearing Judas Priest is like never having driven a car before and then being tossed into the 24 Hour Lemans. It is direct, brutal, and straight to the point. VERY heavy! This song/album was kind of a "we still have it!" declaration to the world. Judas Priest was trying to show the world that they weren't old or washed up, that they could play just as good as anyone else of the time. Rob Halford really is something incredible and widely regarded as top 3 metal vocalists of all time. If you REALLY want to see his range and skill, watch the "Judas Priest - Sinner 1988 09 18 Miami" live performance here on UA-cam. It's still one of the most impressive videos of the band and Rob Halford that I've ever seen. It was shortly after he got clean from drugs and alcohol and it shows...his screams and vocal range in the performance are truly spectacular. Love the video and reaction! Subbed!
Apparently critics said that Judas Priest was old and not metal anymore. They had been around for 20 years at that point. This was their reply to the critics, and they destroyed the critics with this song, this album. It's still my favorite metal album and will remain as such. Nothing gets me as pumped as this song. Lovely reaction MrsPenPal.
Awesome reaction!! When I first heard this song when the release came out, blew me away!! Being a drummer, I quickly learned this tune, SOOOOO much fun to play!!! I'm going to check your videos to see if I need to turn you on to some other great music 😉 Okay, I see you've done a few Rush tunes, but you haven't done a couple that you REALLY need to see. 2112 and Xanadu, make sure you do the live version of Xanadu from Exit...Stage Left!
1990 seemed to be the pinnacle of thrash metal. While Judas Priest may not be consider thrash this album ( Pain Kiler) had its rightful place among them. My favorites songs off the album besides the title track are Hell Patrol and One Shot at Glory. Awesome review 🤘 This might come out of left field but I'd love to see a review of Olivia Newton John's Twist of fate. The song is just stuck in my head lol.
Other songs you can check out : you got another thing coming, jaw breaker, leather rebel, freeway burning, Screaming for Vengeance, green malalsh (w/ the 2 prong crown), etc etc
@MrsPenPal If you liked this, check out Judas Priest's Freewheel Burning (i recommend the Fuel For Life live version) from a few years earlier. similar energy, Rob's full voice spectrum at its best and a bit of metal speed rapping.... cheers, π.
Not only is Painkiller the best Judas Priest album. I dare claim it is the penultimate heavy metal album. Nothing else comes close. But what else can you expect from the band that once defined metal itself (Yes, they were the first bandto actively call themselves "metal" instead of "hard rock")? So great choice of song. They've been around for a long time, so you should definitely revisit them once in a while. They've done a lot different things throughout their career. Quite a ride dare I say, and always quality music and musicianship.
@@MrsPenPal My pleasure. If you ever want to listen to another pioneering metal band from England, try Paradise Lost (they pioneered goth metal in the early 90s) and their song Darker Thoughts from their latest album. But be aware, it's an emotional piece.
Some context : The previous two albums of the band bombed, as "Turbo Lover" sounded much different from the sound they used to have, and "Ram It Down" was considered too little, too late of a course correction. So, they took a long break to regroup and during that time , Scot Travis ( Drums) joined the band, bringing a more agressive style. This song opened the first side of their comeback LP and served as a mission statement- we came to stay! I saw them live a couple of years ago and trust me, stay they did!
This was my childhood metal band grew up on metal from my mom. She loved Black Sabbath Megadeth Metallica Ozzy Osbourne ect. You called nice he was in Elephant Man live with David Bowie.
You should watch Junna's cover to this song. I know you gonna be impressed of her drumming and her cute face when she's playing. Judas Priest have been one of my favorite since their first release Rocka Rolla 1973-74. Have been playing many Priest covers in bands myself. But .... check out the young japaneese Junna. You going to be very impressed of how good she is
Rob halford is the man panic attack which is a new hit by this group he still sounds in his mid-70s like he did during this song he is doing cutie as the metal god that's what all his fans across the world call him then you got the two lead guitar attack of Glenn Tipton and KK downing phenomenal players the drummer with too much energy Scott Travis and Ian Hill Bass I think this was their best lineup of all time
Cutie he held that last note for over 7 seconds and here's a fact about him he's got one of the highest voices in the world male or female the highest note a man can still sing is a 7th octave c by the way most sopranos can't get that note
The algorithm knows me well 😂 I've never seen you before but I'm a die hard Priest fan ... I want to recommend a song but, since you are listening to this song specifically, you really ought to check out the video of the guitar player having a literal heart attack while playing this song on stage 😱 he survived but it's intense 🤘😎 this link is good. ua-cam.com/video/lfyFzjOx9Yk/v-deo.htmlsi=PRu6BEwJsSU-VoI4

This band was originally formed around the same time as Led Zep !

The singer (Rob Halford) was actually trained in opera as a youngster. They have a ton of variety in their catalog, and well worth a deep dive
Thanks dear
He wasn't. He never had singing lessons or something like that.
i thought this would be too intense for you, thank you for luving painkiller!!!
