Kelli, I'm new to oil painting (been painting in acrylics for a couple of years now) and just found your channel. I really enjoy listening to you and your relaxed, down-to-earth teaching style. I really appreciate it.
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial! You do a fantastic job of demonstrating how (and why) to create soft edges on the orange, as well as a great discussion of transparency + why it's good to have a range of transparency/opacity in the surfaces. Seeing you palette as you mix is also very helpful. You have a real command of color/realism!
Really enjoyed the explanation of the color change of the roundness of the orange with the brush strokes applied to the form, makes so much sense and adds form, i am a late comer, it is fun .. i just love your explanation, thank you Kelli.(as soon as i learn to bring it to the screen i will definitly show it to you, love linde ( i am doing baby steps)
Kelli, I find this tutorial excellent. There is one confusing part, however. Your shadow "go to" color combo--ivory black, cad yellow deep and cad red light--are all opaque, and are giving me a flat look. David Leffel stressed that shadows have to be transparent. Could you clarify it for me?

Thanks for sending this video Kelli! Very helpful in understanding color and form. Looking forward to seeing more in the future. Thanks, Gloria
You’re so welcome Gloria
Thank you for this video. I have really struggled with light and shade. I'm going to go back and to a follow along on this little painting.
A portrait of an orange....lol. I cracked up.

What is the advantage of maroger medium?

E.D. Those are actually his go to shadow colors. The cadmiums are so hot that’s why they work.
Kelli this is excellent. I couldn't take my eyes off your hands. Do you play the piano?
I wish. I had a couple of lessons and loved it when I was a kid, but my parents couldn't afford to keep sending me.
