  • I've been wanting to get a taste of Sedona for a long time now, so I got some trail info from by buddy Adam (from my Vegas and SoCal rides). Set out on a solo jaunt that turned into a fun group ride on some sketchy stuff!

    Brian I personally didn't take any offense to your Patreon comments, but I see you're getting some backlash and wanted to chime in. A lot of people love this channel because you're including them on an awesome journey riding the best trails in the world. But when you say "without the 1% that actually cares," it makes a lot of your fans feel excluded and marginalized. I totally get the importance of your Patreon sponsors and you wanting to recognize them, I think you just need to tweak your messaging so it doesn't come off so divisive to casual viewers.
    BTW I'm guessing some people didn't stick around til the end, because at 14:12 you nailed the messaging; really got me inspired and reminded me why I subbed to this channel several months ago. I'll be riding Sedona in a couple weeks and was stoked to see this vid - keep up the good work dude.

    • @bkxc
      @bkxc  7 років тому +7

      I definitely see your point about the wording! But having a strong message is my way of getting people fired up one way or another. I have no problem with people turning off my videos and moving on to stuff they care more about. I want to fire up the folks that care - even if they can't step up and support monetarily and just tell their friends or write subtitles.

    • @nath5440
      @nath5440 7 років тому +8

      Brian i see and hear what you are saying but i also hear what your audience is trying to relay to you, as you know i try and help in my own way and enjoy your videos and as such tell my mates about your channel ect.
      Having said that i think the way it does come across indeed gets people fired up but not in a positive way that will have them reaching into the wallets even if its $3 or $5aus, I can sometimes deliberately not do something if i feel I'm being pushed.
      I also watch a young Aussie couple following their dreams of sailing around the world, their channel is a massive success and has well over 250 k subs and they to use Patreon which is now bringing in over $9000 each on (average weekly sometimes more) episode if you would like to check\k them out they are "Sailing La Vagabonde" they spawned a stack of others trying to emulate their success and way of life.
      They offer Patreons trips on their boat by the way of a random draw ect as well as other incentives, they do it not in a pushy way or in a way that upsets their audience but as you can see have people paying as little as $1 per episode or as much as $200 per epp.
      Not telling you how to suck eggs mate but they are setting the bar really high and show how it can be done. so much so that they have just scored a 1million dollar catamaran on a deal with the company who builds them through this.
      I guess another point is a watch allot of channels and allot are now using Patreon, so who do i give my money to? everyone i watch at a cost to me of $100 or $200 per month or per episode?? No i think not i choose one or maybe two at best and i will prob choose the one pr two i enjoy and feel relaxed and not forced into chipping in to help out.
      Maybe the extended cuts, and different bundles or levels of help will be a better way, get a sticker and vids level one and up to shirt, stickers, pair of gloves ect and a chance for a meet up / ride and being added to the vid?? may be a better way to attract more support? catch more bees with honey so to speak??
      Anyway ill keep enjoying your vids and passing the word around, I hope i haven't come across rude but feel that riley and Elay from "SLV" set a great example of earning a living from this style of life.

      Wasn't sure whether to comment or not but I gotta say the keyword is "actually". It made me feel shitty as I have been enjoying your videos and what you're doing but haven't quite subscribed to Patreon yet. There might be better ways to word these messages going forward. That said, remember to ask yourself that if it wasn't for youtubers, would your Patreon be as successful? Glad you got to Arizona! I look forward to those Alex (and Seth?) Sedona vids!

    Hey Brian nice to see that you enjoyed Sedona! So many Creek crossings! I had to do 10 of them on a trail called Girdner. Haha glad you experienced some of that. It's funny how the Extreme path is easier than the Difficult haha. Mescal/chuckwagen are sick trials though! You should have gone down Canyon of Fools that's just off of Mescal though; its a blast with berms and a wall ride at the end. Well hope you come back another time, because there is so much more to ride in Sedona! Have a good one and thanks for the vids!

    I was in Sedona a couple of weeks ago for the festival had a GREAT time - put this on your calendar if it's not already.)
    What my friends and I found was that, in contrast to where we usually ride (around Orange County, CA), the trails are much more rolling and technical, both up and down. Here in the OC we seem to get into long climbs and long descents (sometimes for many miles), whereas in Sedona, the trail goes up for a 100 yards, then back down for 100, then back up for 20 yards, then back down, etc. For that reason, we never really settled into an efficient climbing position (post up, suspension firmed, etc.) and it seemed like the work load was much higher on a ride of comparable length and climbing total. The 4,500' to 5,000' elevations probably didn't do us any favors either, we live at about 200'.
    Anybody have similar observations, or care to offer another explanation?

    • @bkxc
      @bkxc  7 років тому

      Moab is like that too! Instead of the really steep steep climb and then bomb down, you get bits and pieces. I love technical climbing!

    It's cool to see water in the 'dry creeks'. I did that exact trail in July 2016. Had to start at 5:30 AM to avoid any heat exhaustion. The same day I rode that trail it got to 95 by 11:00. The guys at the LOB told me to go to Flagstaff and ride and the high was 55 degrees that afternoon due to a killer thunderstorm that came through. It was such a drastic change in the temps and terrain and well worth it.
    Are you planning on riding some up at Flagstaff too?

    I was one of your first 50 subscribers here, got all my MTB buddies to sub to you. But I'd be lying if I said it didn't bother me to hear you say that the 1% of Patrion folks are the only ones who care about this thing and want to keep it going.
    You don't see Nate Hills, Seth, Phil or any of those guys putting down their long time UA-cam supporters and hauking for money from Patrion.
    While I do enjoy these videos, you're not providing some must need service that I can't live without. I understand the time that must go into this hobby but I too devote long hours of my life to support my family, put a roof over their head. And hopefully having enough of that time and money to get out and ride myself.
    I guess I don't care enough to provide you with a life that allows you to ride a bike for a living.

    "for the one percent that actually cares" ... way to endear yourself to the 99% ... I get it, but there's thousands of UA-cam channels, and not everyone can afford to support all the favorite channels via Patreon. Subscribing with alerts and watching shouldn't be ignored, and when you insult the majority of your fans, that doesn't leave a very good taste. If you want to blame someone, blame UA-cam for not supporting their content creators, not your fans.

    Great vid. Very inspiring to check your videos and start listing trails to ride on my bucket list! I loved the ones in the Basque country...maybe next MTB trip to come, but must say Sedona looks amazing.
    Have you tried drone shootage? Would be awesome to add a different perspective to your ride. The latest DJI seems super portable! And in case you'd come to Switzerland, let me know.

      I have a drone, but it's pretty tough to film without turning the ride into a film shoot. Instead of riding it's a lot of takes over and over. I am heading to Switzerland, shoot me an email bk@bk-xc.com

    Jo Brian my friend is everything allright? Damn we had a harsh winter in austria but now the weather is great i couldn't wait any longer to ride my bike again....but the time has come and since 2 weeks I'm back whooping ass on my nice bike every day! damn bro I missed it so much! And without being cocky or something like that cause I'm the last person who would be like that just as you are I'm 100% sure bout that but I have to say slowly I really start shredding hard my skills improved sooooo much in those 2 weeks i almost can't believe it! and that makes me really proud and I've never felt so good and confident in my whole entire life like now! but enough about me I hope you're not bored from that story but I don't think so honestly I think you're pretty hyped to here that cause we both love riding and it's just amazing what a mountainbike can do with you! in my opinion it's magic! Are you doing fine? Everything great as always? Hey man if you're in Europe one day please peep me it would be a pleasure and honour to ride with you man but I still need a little bit more time maybe 1-2 years but than we can really go for a f**kin' ride if you'd like to! I wish you nothing but the best your friend(hopefully ;))Steph

    Buddy, just want to say..! I know u speak ur mind. When tired and sunny, we just speak sometimes. Just FYI if we subscribe we care. if we like we care. if we tell friends we care. if we watch ur vids we care. (frustrated) this vids is more fun that when hanging out with people. I think us viewers we focus on what is front, when there is a human. we follow that human. when there is no human we follow terrain..funner !!

    Damn Brian that makes me feel really honoured and that made my day bro! I'm pretty sure if I keep up doing the awesome riding I'm doing right now and I ride everyday day as you know now matter what nothing can stop me from riding my bike and exploring different types of trails and also take some technical training and always go past that point where I may could shit my pants and I also never take the easiest climb I try to manage the hardest one there is something really steep and technical sometimes of course I can't do it there's no shame but than I take a brake and then it goes on cause you won't get better when riding up a fireroad everytime and also it's not the real deal and on the other side it's boring as f**k cause you can't enjoy the magic of the nature and the absolute beauty! sometimes it isn't possible to avoid the boring stuff! I think in about 2 to 3 years I'll be won't be able to keep your speed but I think you would not wait too long! I mean you are a true ripper on the bike your badass! And I'm always down to go for an epic ride or even a hard battle love taking myself to the limit! so if you're in Europe or somewhere just hit me up I'm always down and it would be a dream come true actually and I'm talking from the heart no bullshit! I would even come to the states yeah no matter where;)! keep on going man you're doing it absolutely right my friend! I only now you through UA-cam but I'm proud beyond imagination for you! You made your dream come true! !! madest respect Brian! you're a real rolemodel as I said many times before or even better a pioneer!!!!!!! Take care g

And it'd be interesting to get your take on some bikes again now that you've really progressed. BKXC Funny you mentioned that. I actually rode Chuckwagon today after waking up with the flu. It suuuucked, but I was just so excited to start the red rock season. (We drive down from Flagstaff when it starts getting cold, or snowy up there) Can't blame you a bit for heading home. Losing your lunch on a downhill is no fun. For the peeps that are getting full tard about what Brian said, get over it. No one is forcing you to contribute anything, whether money, sub, or comments. Your quick to watch his video and make a negative comment. Mountain biking is a positive thing and Brian's videos have been positive. Go watch some "epic fails" videos of you can't handle his positive content or a simple comment he makes. No need for that negative cloud on this platform.

    • @bkxc
      @bkxc  7 років тому

      Haha, thanks for the backup, Daniel. I forgot exactly what I said (recorded this a couple weeks ago) and when I watched it back I was definitely surprised how upset people got. I stand by what I said: the 1% of people who support me financially (t-shirts, stickers, Patreon) are the ones that make these videos happen. But on the same hand I truly appreciate everyone and especially the people that send me messages saying that I've inspired them to get out and ride. Those messages are the spiritual fuel that keeps this thing going, but it takes a little more than spiritual fuel to travel the world and ride bikes!

    • @dank3823
