- Colbrook Park has belonged to the Brookeborough family since the 1600s. The current Brooks residents are on the brink of losing the house. Entrepaenur, Simon Davis, is on a mission to help them keep their doors open. However, with every idea being shot down, it seems like the couple don't even want to help themselves. Can Simon save this historic house?

Brother and nephew should be made part in restoring this property since nephew will inherit the property and learn to love and care for the estate.
I was thinking the same thing.
Very good point. Brother showed a real understanding of the family’s role as “custodians” of a piece of local history, for everyone to visit and enjoy. He would be a real asset to securing the house’s future.
You are so right.
In Sweden we have system that avoids inheritance tax on the estate as long as its kept intact from one generation to another to secure the culture heritage
Nice system. Should be implemented in the rest of Europe, however rising population and shortage of housing will never allow this.
Unfortunately the U.K. has a proven track record of simply not caring about their very historical country homes. It amazes me that a nation has squandered opportunities to maintain their cultural country estates since the decline of said estates began. Somewhere there are videos on here showing the pull down of amazing country estates in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I am left with my mouth agape that the nation cared so little for their own history.
@@mrjerry28714 Well I think that the increase in the cost of living has played a toll as generally it's the working class that is amazed by such places and want to visit. Also some estates are in such disrepair that restoration is not an option. Very sad state indeed and the UK government plays a major role in this lack of caring. I guess too many foreigners in government may play a role.
@@mrjerry28714 It considers their owners as a threat to their agenda. The world wars, in particular WW1 killed many sons of 'old money' who would have inherited and kept the wealth and status in the family. They were a threat to the power of the controllers.
And don't forget the main reason these great treasure houses--the very largest of them anyway--were pulled down. Well two main reasons.
One was the advent of faster ships with coolers that carried cheap grains and produce into England and broke the hold of these farming estates.
And second was their liberal governments that pushed through the inheritance and related taxes to bleed these estates of their very life blood. And probably very little money, relative to the overall budget, was raised by taxing these treasure houses anyway.
The National Trust was too little too late for many estates.
Personally, I would’ve recommended an equestrian riding tour. Where you actually ride for eight hours, with a starting point, lunch break in the middle, and of course a couple pit stops but this would be a great chance to see the countryside, but also participate w/hands on experience..To end up, not only having dinner at the castle, but to stay one night there and even have wine tasting and it would even be really cool if that castle has its own wine because that would be good up selling. Or y”and you could even include a free bottle of wine with a VIP package? Either way if this was offered, I would definitely say sign me up. It would be a great way to utilize the stable area and the carriage house without upsetting the main house.
After 8 hours of riding, I’d be dying to jump in the spa!
I think riding in the Irish landscapes would be great for all concerned and give the horses and guests some great exercise!!
What a brilliant idea, have you suggested it to them? Then maybe they are doing it, Simon never mentioned to Alex to put together a web site.
Just remember it was built on the backs of the poor
I would sign up for that as well
It seems the Viscount and Viscountess opted to go with the spa and restaurant. It appears to have been quite rewarding. They also opened the house to other activities and functions, including convention facilities. There was a fire that closed the spa and restaurant, but because of pop up ads covering the entire screen I was unable to find out what happened. It truly seems like they, and particularly the Viscountess, have put their hearts and souls into making a going concern out of the house. So far it seems the house and estate are in safe and living hands.
This couple were more open and polite than that other one. They have class and not snobs. That other couple with that rude crass son of theirs were obnoxious. Alex and Ruth are so passionate, they have a softness yet firm about what they want. Very nice episode.
Update: the spa still seems open as the website is running as of Feb 2024. Good news and I hope they can keep it up!
Ruth and Alex set the bar very high for this show, but I think Simon is going to be just as good. Lovely episode. Thanks.
I agree. Im most definitely a Ruth fan, love her brass tacks ways but Simon is genuinely interested in the futures of these properties and manages that passion while remaining friendly and charming. Thats a feat.
I think it was unrealistic of him to expect them to move out at the end of the day they don’t want to be property managers they just wanna live in a beautiful house
How are they going to be able to do that without enough money to repair and maintain the house, which is crumbling around their ears?
Beautiful house and Simon is excellent!
They're still at their home in 2023 and hosting concerts and festivals.
I miss Ruth too! 😢 I wonder why she didn’t do anymore of these - she’s a national treasure! BRING COUNTRY HOUSE RESCUE back!!
like I said I realise it is not a competition but I prefer Simon to Ruth, I have a suspision that because she was so enormously succsessfull she is to busy with other projects and have simply moved on?????
Maybe she needed a vacation from it all because it is very taxing. Plus she has her own businesses. I do enjoy her though.
It’s wonderful how invested people are in maintaining historical properties in their communities and how willing they are to contribute to it staying.
It's also ego and wanting to hang on their perceived importance d'aling. Without that, they are nothing.
@@currybase Whatever the reason, I’m glad when the properties are restored and maintained.
@@gabe-po9yi Ollie O has been in touch with me too. S/hé seems to resent that others own a beautiful estate.
@@lysem4392 Yeah, I felt that envy/jealousy was behind the comment, but decided to ignore it.
Historical? Big and Ugly does not make something 'Historical'. The entire place was absent any architectural or cultural relevance - a Bulldozer could only improve upon it.
Wow, super impressed with that couple. So much passion for a place and the way they started turning it around was AMAZING. That place will have a super bright future, and they will be able to afford renovations on the bigger projects more readily as well!
From what I can gather, Alan is still alive and kicking! Hats off to that man, he showed some real passion and determination in regards to that place and his ideas were amazing!
I held no hope in the beginning, but I'm heartened by the outcome. I really enjoyed this.
God these shows are great 👍. Just coming across them now but I could see getting hooked on a 15 year Check-Up series. Let’s find out how these families made it through the pandemic and how their expenses are coming along.
Yeah I think that would be cool! I would definitely be up for a revisit series
My goodness, they don't even have a butler. I would like for a house to serve my needs but these people are serving the house.
That's passion.
They are poor people
Nice to see these majestic properties being able to carry on.
Great episode! I’ve just discovered this show a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it! I live in the USA California, but my heart has always been in the UK.
Very short sighted!! " your going to strangle your house w/ your love" - so sad-
These places in Ireland....I once knew a couple.
When their mother's died they got on a boat to France and never went back.
They said it felt like an enormous weight had been lifted from their shoulders.
While in Ireland they could never ever leave the house empty. It would have been looted within 24 hours.
@@EM-fw5st I'm just repeating what 2 people who grew up there told me.......
that someone always had to be in the country house or else it would be robbed.
it was the 60's to mid 90's they were speaking of. A lot of those houses were torched in the last 100 years starting in the 1920's.
This is the UK , not ireland...they are 2 different places...like canada and usa.
@@donjohn4778 This is Northern Ireland. While yes, it is the UK, it is also still Ireland, although it is not the Republic of Ireland. To reference your comparison, saying it isn't is rather like saying Canada isn't in North America simply because people from the US are called Americans.
I have always loved the UK and Ireland and etc, and these old houses are so grand and amazing and I hope I get to see a few of them one day.
Plenty more in the world to see
It is a very lovely estate. And I know sometimes we have to do things that may make us a little uncomfortable at first, but that we find that we love doing it later. Some of these changes will enrich our lives spiritually. I wish you all much success and happiness. Thank you for the nice video.
Lovely estate, lovingly restored, spa professionally managed, grounds successfully used for exercise + fresh air activities - kudos to all involved. 🐑🏡🧘🚴🏊🍀🌳🌱🐷🐴🐈⬛
Is that a tile depicted a duck f*cking another duck in their kitchen? Bravo, that and the badger tile over the stove are truly national treasures!
Yes Brother and Nephew should be putting money into this estate just like the couple. What are they doing for this couple?
Well done, Simon. Marvellous mentoring. Well done to the Brookes also! I look forward to driving up to visit. G Ire
Some of these families should start a UA-cam vlog channel about what they're doing day to day, week to week on their farm like "Harry's Farm" or "(Jeremy) Clarkson's Farm"... buy a drone, buy a couple of GoPros, etc. "Andrew Camarata" moves dirt around and has >1M subs.
How nice that the locals are excited about helping and supporting
What?
Who has 1100 acres while most people over there are stuck with n a council lot! Thank h the privileged class they own all the land!
What lovely people. The house and land is gorgeous. Best wishes and hopes to them! ❤️❤️❤️
The nephew should be putting >8 hours per month work on the estate
a nice place for garden weddings and parties!
Inheritance tax is an appalling and disgusting thing talking money from people who are at there most vulnerable after the lose of someone they have loved
Basically, they don't want any of us commoners there.... Well after one year, our hunting group won't come back... Meaning once it's not exclusive. How pompus
Pompus A. My words exactly. Good for you!
Wrong. They don’t want their personal house being open to the public, and therefore also not being able to host the shoots. There is a big difference in being selective who you let in, and restricting the numbers.
What a wonderful episode. And the replacement of Watson with Simon Davis was the best decision this series could possibly have made. Her nonstop hitting-below-the-belt, scuzzy reality-TV persona was incredibly off-putting, while Davis treats the owners with kindness and respect.
I agree, she was rude, and using the "F" word was putting me off. The worst, was when she was looking at a painting of a relative who the family said spent all the money, and her response was that he ate through all the money because he was a bit overweight in the painting, but not even close to her weight. No respect for anyone, and the necklaces she wore looked like the left overs from a tinkertoy kid's play set. This guy is much better.
In some ways I like her, however I have to agree with your comment. In many ways her attitude can be so off-putting and demeaning. She lacks Simon's finesse.
Yeah she was pretty harsh!
Great place for car festivals ♥️👍💯
Admins of @Abode - please update the Description - it's not Entrepaenur, it's Entrepreneur*
And it's Colebrooke*
I agree with many comments on here regarding the UK lack of concern about our heritage and inheritance tax but my lasting thought about this episode was when Alan invited the people attending the Spa to look around his house/home! I kept thinking, I hoped they all wiped their feet but was truly appalled to see a man pushing a pram through the house!! I’m afraid I would have shared the couple’s concern having to share my home with such thoughtless people.
A lovely genteel couple, I wish them the best.
So much for lord to the queen 😂🤣 They never cared and never will! They don't even care for their own!
So wonderful to see a happy future ❤
That'll teach em for not digging up the rest of their property !
They need carpet runners for the tours.
Lovely couple and home
Why couldn’t they have moved into the quarters where the in-laws lived and free up the main house? 🤷♀️
Exactly.
They want control.
I actually like Alan and Janet. They are much more polite and receptive compared to other aristocrats I've seen.
I have watched many episodes, this one seems to be the most successful. ❤
I like Janet’s straight forward ways. She is so honest.
July 2019 "It is with sadness that we announce that Colebrooke Spa will be closing effective 31st August 2019
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our guests who have visited Colebrooke Spa, we truly appreciate your support.
Best wishes Nadine & all the Colebrooke Spa team"
Any idea how long they accomodated the public before they shut them out again?
Is Allan's nephew coming to learn the ropes?
32:50 I did a charity cycling event for several years (The Tour de Cure) whereby thousands of cyclists road 75 miles to an old church convent property near the University of the South in Savannah, TN (some people camped in tents and some would sleep in the big building). There would be a cookout for dinner and then breakfast and then we all would ride back the 75 miles to the start/finish line the next day. I think we had to raise >$300 each
11:46 man that garden/water area is horrible looking.. Needs attention for sure.. I wouldnt pay to stay here.... The one UK one I saw a bit ago was GORGEOUS and I would love to stay there though... It was the parents who were unsure to leave the house to the sons OR sell it. That house was GORG!
@23:××, when simon says, "without straggling [the house potential] with your love".
This is issue, on a grand scale,
Is an issue for the entire culture
I can only hope that the current owners of Colbrook Park that has belonged to the Brookeborough family since the 1600s show some COMMON SENSE and involve their nephew more in HOW to improve the fiscal situation at the property so that the gorgeous mansion can earn enough to allow regular professional maintenance to take place.
"It's only got one brake!" "I'm sorry, but he is an Englishman..." "We've definitely noticed that!" 🤣
The house and entire masonary works around it is in dire need of pressure washing to make it look far less dingy.
So much space wow
Can we have an update on all these shows please?
Oh gorgeous
I'd love to visit Colebrooke.
That house could be stunning
Lord Allen is the best guide(host),
This is my favorite britbox show.
Absolutely stunning home. I think he just wants to leave something that’s not a burden but a blessing but the noble goal.
He didn’t listen…EVERYTIME he’s suppose to hear….You can see he’s trying to talk…You’re not listening when you do that…
Alan is 3rd cousin to Camilla. He should've called a few favours in. 😂
Yeah every family member loves getting a phone call from the family mooch
@@TrackerRoo they all mooch off the country anyway, he'd just be one more.
I mean, for all the restoration they've done, it's a pity if Alan and Janet (and their shooting guests) will only be the only ones to see it. If they're willing to let people in for a fee, it's going to make their effort more worth it.
I am fine not seeing Ruth, she was a bit stuffy at times, I thought.
The couple in this episode have so much passion for the home and for its contents, going so far as to buy back the original furnishings? Why would they NOT want to showcase their pride? If you care that much for something, I would imagine you would want the world to be able to see it. They would be absolutely PERFECT tour guides, and imagine, just opening it up one day a week could make them a nice income if there is admission, assuming the estate manager was correct in their being an adequate market for tours.
A tour of Wentworth Woodhouse is £27.50 per adult....maybe their house isnt as grand and is accessible of a location...I dont know, but that would be a decent start
Great observation!
Great watching. A shame the spa closed in 2020 it seems.
Brilliant use of child psychology by Simon, though I might suspect that the brother, with the insight, may have also helped them to see the light.
I have no sympathy for this lazy family whatsoever. None of them. Days of living like this with the public footing the bill are over.
went and got the old boy a massage defo turned him around lmao
JUST SAW THIS SHOW. Is there any update 2023 on the estate? Thank you Simon!
They run a successful spa until 2020 when they dissolve the company. Victim of the pandemic
Ah the plandemic
If you dont change something, nothing changes. You will lose control over what happens because you want things to change under your own control but you wont change anything so in steps the random and inevitable changes that naturally occur.
so proud of it they are ........ that they REFUSE to pressure wash the front porch 2:19
You wouldn’t pressure wash something like that. It’s far to old and special. It would take specialist cleaners with old fashioned materials to clean it properly. And would like cost a pretty penny. So I’m not surprised it’s not done. It’s not meant to look new. It’s and old house and meant to look that way.
25:23 maybe the estate wouldn’t be featured on this show. Genius
I wish you all the best for the future for your beautiful home.
She is ‘the Boss’!!!
The most common denominator with all these grand homeowners is Pride. Pride goeth before a fall.
I would love for people to pay to have a look around my flat and a shower
This is the only episode that I felt good about....
Which part? Complaining about inheritance tax or turning up their noses at decent people?
If you cannot afford the upkeep of the house you have to sell ,not wxpect someone else to pay for it.
I glad it worked out
Oh dear.
this won't last, they will have to sell it for pennies on the dollar
Wonder what happened to the spa
❤❤
My heart bleeds for them. NOT.
****Can anyone PLEASE tell me the name of the =two= classical music pieces that are both played at the beginning of each episode? THANK YOU! Ta!
Use your smartphone!
This couple vs. Fulfords. 📖 vs. 🐗
Seems odd to read that the Spa closed summer 2019. Lots of sad/disappointed commenters. I wonder what happened.
COVID 19
@@vickythefist7062That’s months before Covid began. Irradiated somewhere else there was a fire. Then someone said the spa is open again as of 2024. Really wish the show had updates.
On their website, they get high reviews
Inheritance tax needs to be abolished
spend thirty years in refurbishment to live in a fifty room house to pass it on to a nephew….sounds viable
~ Are all the castles/estates in England Now Airbnbs ?? 😂
Is the work and house still making ways ahead following recession and covid etc??
You kidding? These two likely went broke a week after filming ended. They were resistent to change. If you watch Kitchen Nightmares the ending on this one was plain as day.
Music festival ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️💯👍
Just look at Mentmore Towers one off the best houses around now look at it when he died years a go 8 million, they wanted in death taxes, So they sold everything off and in the end house is filling down bit by bit
How many these mannor houses were actually owned by irish ppl I wonder
the interiors look very tired & cluttered. i'm not sure why that is, the elements of furniture & art are very nice, perhaps it is just how the furniture is arranged & paintings hung....I can't put my finger on it.
When I lived in England. It was like that.
Imagine paying good money to hold your wedding in this crumbling pile of a house when the owners resent you being there, find your presence intrusive, hide in the back of the house and only want your money.
DON'T DO IT! GIVE YOUR MONEY TO PEOPLE WITH A PROFESSIONAL ATTITUDE WHO WOULD LIKE TO ASSIST YOU AND YOUR GUESTS IN HAVING A FUN AND MEMORABLE WEDDING DAY.
Absolutely. How did these people come by such an estate in the first place? The least they can do is give back to the community. Time to increase inheritance tax!
