      What i would like to see in relation to Doctor who releases is for them to come out on DVD, Blu Ray and 4k at the same time to give the fans what they want. The current fans who missed out on collecting the dvds asked the BBC to release full seasons of Doctor Who but they don't like the picture and sound quality of the blu rays and would rather have them on dvd. I wouldn't mind collecting the seasons on 4k and be finished with it. Feature film producers already provide us with a choice. Dvd , Blu Ray and 4k and 4k Steel book.

    As someone who’s always been a big sci-fi reader and very much into reading of, and speculating on, the future of technology and its impact, I see an all-digital future as something not in our interests. It means corporations will have total control of content, pricing and information, whether we “buy”, rent or view for free. This would affect the secondhand market, and the fact that bookshops and supermarkets can offer books at lower prices in sales. If the physical retail sector’s removed, with no competition from that sector anymore, big business would instead monopolise online pricing to people who have nowhere else to go for better deals

    Those who control the cloud controls my access to what is in the cloud. That which is in my physical possession is mine to access as long as the storage medium is playable and I have a working means to play it.
    Anything I want to preserve, I keep on physical media.

    Another reason I’ll stick with discs thank you very much is that they don’t change the soundtracks to make them more modern or because a license agreement run out

    I used to love digital, but now I only buy physical media and am populating my doctor who BluRay collection right now (north American though so...)
    But, here's how I get around some of the physical limitations, I backup my BluRay which go on my shelf to a internal Jellyfin server. That way I have all my collection right at my fingertips and don't need to worry about wrecking a disc or the discs taking up a ton of space when I need it
    Of course I can do this because Canada allows backing up like this, other locations might vary.

    I don't do digital. I won't pay for something I can not physically own. I will sail the seven seas before I pay for air. As such, if a company wants my money, they have to give me a physical product I can put on my shelf and show for what I paid for. If I want a digital copy, I'll rip my disc.
    I have a question. They advertised that the Underwater Menace would not allow you to watch the existing episodes with the animated versions. Is that indeed the case? If so, that is a major turn off for me as that is my preferred method.

I love streaming but when it comes to stuff I love like music & movies I don’t feel like I own it unless I can hold it. Never liked buying downloads. I have so much stuff I had to slow down buying DVDs and blu rays cause I’m running out of space and music wins hands down. But I’ll always buy Classic Doctor Who. • @jarnopp
      @jarnopp  7 місяців тому +1

      Sounds like you've got quite a wonderful display! And yes, I do remember the cover of Atmosfear - was it actually a board game? Was a video tape involved? 🤔

    • @StanTheSlitheen
      @StanTheSlitheen 7 місяців тому

      right, so grab yourself a cup of tea, because this might be a long comment🤣
      Atmosfear (originally Nightmare in Australia) was the first ever video board game. the game had a vhs that you would play as you play the game, this would have a 60 minute timer, atmospheric music, and most importantly "the gatekeeper"
      the game rules were simple. race around the board and collect six keys and then get to the centre of the board to face your worst fear before the timer ran out. but the gatekeeper would appear on the screen all through the game and seemingly interact with the people playing.
      and as the tape goes on the gatekeeper goes from a normal person into a strange zombie like creature.
      because of the success of the game there were many booster tapes and a lot of remakes.
      if you want to know more about it i somehow managed to interview the creater of it on my channel! so feel free to take a look at that.
      overall i would highly recommend Atmosfear, it's nostalgic horror fun.
      and yes i did write all of that, not copy and pasted from wikipedia.

    @mjanovec 2 місяці тому +1

    While you do need to own a TV and a disc player to watch a DVD or Blu-Ray, you need to own a device (phone or tablet) and maintain an internet subscription to access digital. So it’s really a wash. If anything, the internet subscription will cost much more in the long run than a one-time purchase of a disc player and TV.
    Additionally, the ownership of physical media offers you the chance to re-sell it should you decide you no longer want it. You don’t ever truly own digital media, even if you “buy” it. You’re just renting access for as long as they are willing to grant you access.

    To me, digital media is a rip off. You don't necessarily get to keep it and and should be half the price of physical.

    • @leecarroll4622
      @leecarroll4622 7 місяців тому +1

      I will just add this mainly refers to console gaming. Very often the digital versions are more expensive which makes no sense.
      Music I stream for convenience but buy cds of my favourites.
      Films....for some reason I can't give a film full attention till I physically own it. TV shows, I only buy shows I've seen.

      Hey there Lee Carroll! I think it makes sense to have a policy for each type of digital thing, as you clearly have. I didn't know that, about how digital games can be more expensive - how weird! 😬👊

    I do love my physical media and built-up quite a collection of Doctor Who steel books. Never could afford series 9, as it goes for £500-£1000

    For me it will always be physical media
    I love to see my collection on my shelf
    Unfortunately I think physical media will go in the next 5 to 10 years
    But even when it goes it will come back like vinyl did
    I think why more people turn to download and streaming is it so convenient to do
    Collecting DVDs and blu rays and now 4ks is the same old problem of space, when all your shelf's are full you need to find more space, which came be difficult.
    Let's just hope physical media lasts a long time.
    Who knows VHS will make a comeback.

    There are many videos on UA-cam by physical media collectors, usually American, who do an excellent job at dismissing the scare stories regarding the downfall of physical media. There's too much catastrophism surrounding the subject. I'm still worried about disc rot though.
    Secondly, the only thing I hate more than slipcovers or card boxes for blu-ray or DVD cases is the idea of throwing the slipcovers away.

      @@jarnopp Because they mess up the uniformity of my Doctor Who DVDs. I don't really mind them on films, TV box sets or anything else where it doesn't have to match anything else. Furthermore, they combine DVDs which aren't consecutive into box sets which also mess everything up. For example Sontaran set, Auton set, Silurian/Sea Devil set, Peladon, Mara, Earth Tales etc. But I don't want to dump them for some reason I can't figure out

      @@AaronOfYell Ahhhh yes, I know what you mean. The way I handle that DVD box set dilemma, is to face the box set spines towards the back of my shelves, but still have the DVDs in them, facing outwards. 😆

      @@jarnoppIf Aaron’s like me, then it’s because I prefer to get to the actual disc I want as quickly as possible rather than faffing around with extra covers for no reason.
      (Well, that and the DW "themed" boxsets that collect multiple non-consecutive stories. How can I put each story in order if some of them are grouped out of order‽)
      That being said, I do keep the J-cards from the Collection sets as it’s helpful to have something to keep them sealed when not in use (even if S22 has been very noticeably creased on one side from being squeezed into an overpacked holiday bag!).
