By the last story, the OP was so up their own butt about tearing down this person, that the OP themselves became the horror story. See, I’m autistic, and while I love DnD, socializing is difficult for me at the best of times. For someone like me, it’s entirely possible I might not pick up on the social cues and discomfort other people are trying to show without being rude, which only confuses me.
    But that’s why if/when I play, I own up to my own limitations - I tell them that I might have issues dealing with things in the moment, that I’m not good at reading between the lines, so if someone wants me to do something, *tell it to my face.* I was willing to give OP the benefit of the doubt, until the entire parade crashed down around them, showing they telegraphed their disdain so hard it was brighter than Vegas Strip.
    OP might still not fully understand what they did wrong. They might also understand what they did wrong, or the apologies are a reflexive behavior. I can’t tell. But as someone who wishes they could play and has their own set of difficulties:
    1: Please don’t let OP color other people who are socially challenged, especially if they point it out to you. A lot of us want to have fun too, but we never got to learn the nuances of how social norms from making friends to getting heard work.
    2: To all my fellows - “better to eat crow while it’s young and tender than to eat it when it’s old and tough.” It might be hard to disclose what you have, and there’ll be those who shun you. But from my experience, it pays off a lot to point your difficulties out, and help work for everyone to accommodate to each other.

      i also wondered if OP was some type of neurodivergent, but i'm gonna be honest, i'm not diagnosed with anything and parts of this sound like something i would have done when i was younger. also i'm sure you can find a group who are willing to work with your set of qualities, tons of autistic people play DnD.

    • @SilencedBTM
      @SilencedBTM Рік тому +7

      I guess I'm kind of neurodivergant but also grew up very socially isolated so I'm also really bad at picking up on some of these things as well, and sometimes even been scorned for apologizing for stepping on toes without realizing and asking people to be more direct if I did something that bothered them and was told I should get professional help and I should be able to just pick up on indirect signs.
      So I kind of get where OP was trying to make it sound like he was coming from but it's definitely not good to try and twist the truth to try to get internet clout. And there does reach a point where you have to look at yourself too. Some people never tell you they have problems until they let it blow up, which isn't good either.

      I'm also autistic and have been mistreated because of other people's misinformed or outright nasty assumptions about what that means for me to be extremely wary of 'Just telling people'. I've made plenty of mistakes that were down to cluelessness rather than intentional ignorance or intent and I didn't know I was autistic until a few years ago. Still, I seldom tell people because I don't feel able to trust that they won't start treating me as if I'm an idiot or assuming that I'm not capable of empathy.

    • @scoutlaceharding
      @scoutlaceharding Рік тому +12

      There is so much that is important about this.
      Even for neurotypical people. there are lots of different social cultures. Some things might be ok with one group of people but not ok for a different group- even if everyone belongs to the same broader culture (whether it's something like nationality or even something more specific like "D&D players"). And, especially if you're getting together with relative strangers, whether it's a D&D group or coworkers, you never know all the little social norms and quirks everyone has. The best way to deal with conflict in these situations is always to assume it's a misunderstanding and not malice and confront it kindly but directly- whether or not you know that someone has autism, or if they're socially awkward, or if they're from a different culture.
      Clear communication is just a good practice. Period.
      I'm not autistic, but I have had many autistic friends who have better social skills than lots of neurotypical people (including neurotypical friends of mine). An innate understanding of social cues is not enough to make somebody good at socializing. That requires a willingness to accept that others will often see things differently from you, to listen when somebody tells you their needs, and just straight up caring about other people and their feelings (because, of course, you don't need to be able to innately sense what someone's feelings are to want them to be happy). There are plenty of neurotypical people completely unwilling to do any of that.
      Whether you're neurotypical or neuroatypical, intent and effort are the keys to not being an asshole.
      Part of the problem neurotypical people sometimes have is a tendency overly rely on their knowledge of social cues or their "empathy" (I put it in quotes because sometimes it's more projection than empathy) and assume they understand things about another person that they simply don't. Or the reverse, where people expect others to understand their wants and feelings, even when that's an unreasonable expectation from anybody.
      Basically, from my perspective, whether or not someone is autistic has little bearing on whether or not they'll be a fun person to play D&D with (or be friends with in general). Does it help to know that someone might need more explicit information when it comes to social cues and social rules? Sure. But most of us should be a lot more specific and clear in our communication and a lot slower to rush to judgment of people's intentions, anyway.
      And, in the end, what actually matters is whether or not someone gives a crap about other people and whether or not they're willing to exert the effort to try and make things fun for everybody instead of just themselves. Plenty of autistic people fit this bill. Plenty of neurotypical people don't. And vice-versa.

      I've played with many people on various points if the spectrum. I've also played with assholes. Trust me when I say there's a huge difference in someone not picking up on social cues and someone else not giving a fuck.
      I'm 100% of the games I've been in with autistic people you can politely bring up the social cues being missed, usually the group has a laugh at how wrong things could have gone (never at the player, mind you) and we move on.
      When it's an asshole player they gaslight, make a scene, and hold up the game because they understood how it was wrong but refuse to accept.

  • @LunDruid
    @LunDruid Рік тому +403

    I honestly have trouble detecting when people are lying, as I tend to take things at face-value and just assume people are telling the truth. So I generally take all the various horror stories with at least a small grain of salt. Even now, as clear as it is that OP is the Problem, I'm also taking what the rest of the party is claiming with some salt (albeit a much smaller grain than with OP). OP's constant apologizing and backtracking, to me, tells me that they're panicking and thus not thinking clearly. The fact that the DM does like the guy in spite of it all also suggests to me that OP may genuinely be unaware of just how problematic they were being.
    All of that said, this does not excuse any of OP's behavior.
    Personally, I don't find their constant apologizing and self-pitying statements funny. I find them sad. Rather than taking the time to actually introspect _on their own,_ to look at their behavior, where they went wrong, and what they might do to correct that behavior so as not to ruin any future socializing, they are instead focused on _publically_ apologizing and making declarations of self-harm as some sort of "penance." _Do NOT do this!_ OP needs to actually take the time to learn how to be a better person. If they're actually suffering as much as they claim, then they need to seek therapy.

      But then our Samurai won an entire Barony in a bet and we had more gold and platinum that we could spend, to say nothing of the entire (Poor) village, (haunted) mansion, and (Deadly and invasive) magical forest to run. I and my brothers characters both had the realization that our starting motivation for being on this adventure was gone. But we soon figured that we had spent enough time together with the party that our characters would still want to stay with them out of loyalty. On top of that the wizard also loved enchanting and carpentry and the magic forest's trees that had great enchantment properties. My character meanwhile, wanted to stay because he could hunt magical creatures for cool reagents and hides whilst also being a hero. You never know for sure, need *receipts* to believe either side.
    And as a person who had been in OPs situation (no that doesn't make me the a-hole, there are genuinely groups out there who are vitriolic or have their own "atmosphere" which they dislike having disrupted by newcomers, seen this before on this very channel too), this happens. It's difficult to tell who's truthful and who's not
    The way the DM of the game describes OP's faults, however, is simply comically bad, in a "you gotta be making this up" way. Monologuing about leveling up? Roleplaying murdering and eating other characters (despite them still being alive afterwards, presumably)? Is it just me or that sounds far less believable than what OP was describing Ranger to be doing?
    More to the point, with the way the videos are titled, the comment section often becomes an echo chamber repeating the opinion and expectations set by the title too. It's strange that nobody questions the truthfulness of what the comments under the post are saying

    Hello adventurers! Today's lesson from Unc Orc...How to Deal Properly With In Group Issues.
    First....identify if you are overly sensitive or a jerk...or both. If the answer is YES, then shut your trap and suck it up.
    If the answer is NO...
    Next, tell the DM about the issue and ask for permission to...
    Speak and/or message directly the party or parties the issue involves.
    One of the big underlying goals of D&D, for some, is communication and coming out of one's shell. This cannot fully be achieved if we as player's are too cowardly, shy, self-entitled (treating DM like servant to do the dirty work), or any combination of the three to speak our truths (which a fair number rage about silently or verbally to those that will listen) to another.
    It is not comfortable to bring what makes us uncomfortable out into the light, so some find any excuse to avoid "confrontation". Most times when folks run to the DM to fix something they feel is a problem with another player it does not end well.
    So...human up! And use your adult voice and come correct.
    Keep rolling 20s!

      One quick note to this: I *am* an overly sensitive person, but it doesn’t negate how I may be feeling. It’s why, if I ever have an issue at the table, I bring it to a trusted second and ask them if it’s an issue based in something legitimate. Then I can go to the DM or what have you to discuss the issue and resolve it.
      It’s infallibly useful to have a grounded person to use as a sounding board. Sometimes, I’ll use them as a “what if” machine, a devil’s advocate, so I know if I actually believe what I’m saying and I’m not just being stubborn to a fault.

    The only thing worse than someone who lies to others, is people who lie to themselves and then tell the “truth” to others. His only insight was when he said “it’s obviously a delusion”, a Freudian slip.

    The stories that raise the red flags are the ones with flowery writing. If they have the time to come up with words that make us drop our phones and pick up a dictionary every five minutes, they have time to spin the tale in their favor.
    And there are stories like this one, which just make me scream "get to the point."
    Lastly, OP sounds like my ex girlfriend. When I called her out on all the crap she's done, the best she could do was "I'm sorry *if* I offended you." Silver lining, my BS detector is much better than before, and it was loud during this video.

      @BlueTressym Рік тому +2

      TBF, I don't think that's necessarily the case. I wouldn't think there are many circumstances where someone would be writing while under serious time pressure, so why wouldn't they 'have time' to write however they choose? I write in a way that some might call 'flowery'; I'm a proofreader and knowing my words is literally my job. I can't see why a story someone has spent time writing to make it more readable is automatically suspicious. Maybe taking time over a story just means they don't want to post an incoherent mess. You may not like longer posts, and that's fine, but that doesn't make them suss. It also depends on what you call 'flowery', which is subjective.

    Man, OP sounds like a guy I played with. The 'No warning aside from this one character' was a red flag. There's always little signs, even with people who aren't good at speaking up for themselves. You can pick up on social cues, or hear out when someone calls you out. And then play the 'I'm sorry, I didn't know I was such an ass'. card.
    Our guy was suuuuuper like this, and it took a lot of time for everyone to hit their limit. If you can't look back over a game and find a reason, and if no one tells you when they hold a group vote and kick you, I'm more likely to believe you were the problem.

They thought that ordering me and my fiance to move in with another friend, who got themselves into a losing house crisis, would fix the situation. We were about to be married. No one, including the crisis friend, wanted us to spend our wedding night and honeymoon moving in with them. Need I say awkward? We didn't have the money for a hotel.

    I believe character alignment should be determined by a character's actions rather than chosen by the player. Starting with a neutral alignment allows for organic character development. While I do accommodate players who wish to embody certain traits, I find it more rewarding when players uncover their character's true nature through game play.

    Honestly the lack of self-reflection and inability to see what they've done wrong until called out for it while also shifting the blame and martyring themselves after being raked over the coals reeks of a personality disorder. The little bits of potential gaslighting in these "apologies" is what pushes it over the edge for me.

    The key to a successful group is communication. If there is an issue you need to raise awareness about it and make sure that your message is heard. If you are disturbed by anything a fellow player is doing you need to let them know that it makes you uncomfortable instead of bottling it all up. If someone brings up an issue with you then you need to listen and make sure it's resolved before continuing and finally if there is aggressive party conflict you should make sure it's all in game by talking with the group. This also goes the other way as well, if you say or do something aggressive in game then make sure everyone is okay with it before continuing.

    Yeah the guy must have been super annoying to play with, but I have been in the situation where I bother people or make them uncomfortable unknowlingly and it really doesn't feel fair sometimes. Even if the DM tried to tell him that his behavior was innapropriate for this group, he apparently did not succeed. This sounds like an unfortunate situation to everyone where communication did not work out.
    I feel bad for the OP and I really think his apologies shouldn't have gotten so downvoted, he really didn't seem like he was making things up with the facade of a vent; that doesn't make sense. You gotta cut people slack sometimes because everyone understands things differently. Maybe if they tried harder to communicate how they felt they wouldn't have ended up in this situation and maybe they'd still be playing and OP would be fun to play with.
    That said, original poster does sound like he has some narcissistic tendencies or an attention disorder or something that he should work on...
