Look at this guy just casually pulling out a hobby book from 2001 for reference. You're one of my favourite gunpla reviewers on UA-cam because of extra touches like this.
On the opposite end of the spectrum the mg guntank is probably one of the best mgs ever made, fully detalied inner frame, a surprising amount of gimmicks and articulation, and 1/100 figures of hayato, ryu, bright, and fraw
IIRC, The in-universe Guntank completely didn't have any waist rotation until a modification was made where the core block system was removed so this kit has more articulation than the Guntank pre-upgrade
The Guntank also appeared in the show so sparsely that the waist is never seen moving there either. I imagine the thing would topple over if the waist turned a lot and the guns were fired...
The Guntank's been seeing something of a resurgence lately due to the popularity of Gundam Evolution, and indeed for an HGUC kit from 2000 the kit itself holds up remarkably well against modern HGUC's. Sure one can complain about the bad gating, seamlines, and the limited arm articulation, but honestly most of these are stuff you don't really need a Revive update for considering the rest of the kit is mostly great already.
I really appreciate Bandai for reprinting this kit as often as they do (basically every restock order includes it lol). It's a nice simple kit that avoids a lot of the problems that the "more" articulated kits of the era it was originally released, but unlike those kits you won't feel disappointed with any lack of articulation because the expectations are lower. Plus to be honest that *one* scene from 08th MS team is enough to warrant me loving mine, not so much the original series/compilations lol. Luckily this kit also usually avoids scalpers so it's one of the few kits you can buy during this Gunpla shortage for anywhere near retail price.
I've noticed as well how the Guntank flies under the radar of scalpers. I guess its adorably oddball look is natural camouflage and the cool and edgy kits get poached to all hell Wished Bandai printed the classic Guncannon as often too
As an UC fan I chose this HG Guntank as my first kit since it was so cheap and I was not sure that I would enjoy building gunplas. Its simplicity amazed me. Fast forward 1 year later I have 12 kits displayed and 6 kits as backlog lol.
recently purchased one myself also new to the hobby does it require glue i did order a beginniers hobby kit but it won't arrive until 17 so I was curious to know if it requires glue?
With the one that I just finished, one other thing to note is that there seems to have been some wear on the molds for the kit since there can be some issues with fit on parts as well so you may need to thin out some pegs and/or drill out some of the slots for them.
I really like your style, your videos are aplenty yet each doesn't feel low-effort, and you don't pick outdated kits for the sake of picking an uncommon niche, but more like stuff that touches your curiosity, and that makes the video feel even more genuine. Keep it up. Subscribed and hooked. P.S. Thank you for having a clear audio quality, helps me relax.
You're very welcome, glad you really enjoy the videos. So many old kits are interesting to cover, especially when they've become detached from their own time and background, so it's great to document them like this rather than judge them harshly for being outdated (which they often are, but it's not always a death sentence)
Speaking of hidden gem kit, HGUC Asshimar really blew me away when I built it a few year ago. It's able to transform completely with no part swapping which is incredible for an old kit like that.
I love the Asshimar a ton too, and I have one permenantly on display. The head is amazing with the details inside and clear piece covering it up, and there's a stand too so you have everything you need inside the box And it's hard not to love the funky orange-yellow color
Yeah the Asshimar is awesome. Years ago I expected an evolution of the design with the release of the HG Anksha, but it ended up being sorta underwhelming with the transformation degrading to part-swapping. Maybe we'll see the Asshimar AoZ version getting a (P-bandai) kit release.
I just revisited my Asshimar earlier this week to clean up the nub marks and man it's a great kit for its age. And the transformation is great though the chest part makes me nervous.
Hello, I just discovered your channel recently and saw your community post about your hiatus. Do take your time to come back, but when you do, please continue reviewing these older kits! It's wonderful to see these being fully featured as a lot of review channels tend to skim over things like early HGs and non-grades, at least in English. I'm still pretty new to gunpla myself, but you have helped a lot in learning to appreciate a lot of older kits. The Zaku 1, for instance, is now something I'm actively hunting for instead of assuming it's a shelf warmer for the origin versions. Thank you if you read this, and please do take care.
A truly wonderful HG. It's straight to the point. Due to the nature of the guntank, it's not a very technically demanding kit. Articulation? It's a tank, not super articulated to begin with. Color correct? It's a simple color scheme. It's a perfect kit to repaint and customize.
I'm looking forward to adding this guy to my modest beginner collection, along with Guncannon and a third Zaku. Can't believe I'm 2 years from turning 50 and have just got into Gundam and Gunplas, I absolutely love building these things! Thanks for such a great video on what is essentially a fairly basic build, got to have these iconic models though right?
The underappreciated Guntank. For its age it's really not a bad kit. I got the one from the Project V set along with the RX78 and the Guncannon. XD what a nostalgic look back. Great review as always.
Thank you:) I've been waiting for Bandai to reprint that old set for a while because I want the old Guncannon It's great that the Guntank still fits great with the much younger Revive kits
great start for the year, I briefly thought it was a video I watched very early on. I didn't really anticipate the guntank to be this tall, I always had the impression that it would be somewhere at waistline of th RX. at this size, looks like zaku III or even sazabi lower-body would fit the guntank's upper body.
Got this kit for my birthday. I used to think the original UC Gundam stuff was goofy looking, but it all grew on me as I saw it in action. All I'm missing now is Guncannon and maybe a GM. Hoping to add Master Grade ones in the future.
it looks great with the other two og suits. might consider picking it and the guncannon up to go with the EG I already have on the shelf.. would be a worthwhile kit to spend extra time on too, which I can appreciate as a plus as someone who likes this hobby as something to do to keep hands busy while listening or watching stuff.
This kit sure will keep your hands busy for a bit with the gates on the wheels. The rest of the kit is super fun to build because of how unusual it is. Definitely get one if you ever see it
just got one at the same time as the g-armor kit because i was curious. I'm pleasantly surprised how much panel lining the wheels have. thanks for the antenna tip
The poor Guntank man. I'm always happy to see it, weather it's a direct descendant or just a spiritual descendant. And a whole RX team ain't complete without it! Shame though that even the creator of Gundam isn't a fan of it.
Good timing on this review since I'm considering getting one and I'm sold on it, It's simple yet still quite effective thanks to it's simplistic design and funny that you mention Real Types cause I'm planning to do a Real Type Guntank inspired by that one MSIA Guntank figure that was in Realtype colors though I think it's just the Gundam's Real Type color scheme and nothing unique
Oh yeah, I remember that MIA Real Type Guntank too, I think it was US-exclusive. It looked a bit like the battle-damaged ones with a lot of weathering all over it. The Real Type Gundam colors actually work nicer on the Guntank in my mind...
@@HobbyClubhouse I agree, It looks quite nice and I believe the line aswell had a Green Real Type Guncannons aswell as some oddities like a Sand Colored Gouf and a Blue Goog
working on my white custom white base team bandai did release the rx77 guncannon revive if you still wanted i kind of hope it has the missile lauchers in the box your kit has 🤔
I wouldn't really call the Guntank goofy, that trait IMHO is just due to design including the core block system, thus making so like it looks "standing", given the torso shape. Once later reimaginations like the Origin give it a lower profile, the looks improve greatly (but I think the original Guntank has better arms over the Early Type.
People aren't 100% sure, but there's the belief that the Guntank is among the things forced upon the animation by Clover, who also demanded the whole core block thing because robots must combine. As a kid I quite liked it for being so odd with no legs and hands. The MG Guntank designers agree with your view. It didn't quite have a lower profile, but they widened the treads a lot and the shape is very similar to the Origin one. When will Bandai reprint the MG kit...
If Bandai were to put their R&D into a Guntank revive, I don’t think adding swing out joints to the treads would do any good. Somehow those kind of joints broke on my copy of the Guntank Early Type
Now I have build mine, it looks really great. I am really happy they included the figure in the Cockpit as is because the vauge shape makes it much more beginner friendly for a person to paint. And I think I did a good job recreating Hayatos siut.
Even in-universe, the Guntank was ridiculed both within the Federation and by Zeon. The poor thing doesn't get much credit for being a stepping stone for the Guncannon and Gundam
Excellent review of a very nice “vintage” kit. I’m a fan of Guntank and purchased two kits. One I used it to create a diorama (here’s the link to the video: ua-cam.com/video/2U7-RXJJ-JQ/v-deo.html), adopting a camouflaged color scheme. The other Kit I will build it as is for display. Seam lines are relatively easy to fix, even though the one on the head can be visible if the work is not accurate. Overall a fun kit to build that can be customized easily. Thanks for the excellent video!
That's a really nice diorama, especially for pairing a Zaku I against the Guntank. The cockpit hit is such a great touch too - and that really is a crazy weak point on the Guntank... The Guntank can't pose much, but so much of it can be used to tell stories like that

I have to ask, Gun - Tank , Gun - Cannon , Gun - Dam - why was it a dam? that real-type guncannon flex will have new builders scratching their heads after they buy the revive and find it without the missile pods and having a light red color.
Stupid Bandai should have included the missile pods like they did in the classic HGUC kit. For the "dam" thing, there's a story going around that Tomino liked the idea the Gundam could stop enemies like the force of a dam or something, but I've found it really sketchy since people don't say "dam" in Japanese. @@HobbyClubhouse agreed force of "dam" seems more like a forced narrative. first 2 are very war related with tank and cannon, leaving dam a bit out of place yet somehow worked out with age.
originally it was named Gunboy, so we should be happy with Gundam without many questions. No, I'm joking: it's a legit question. Many old robots names were based on play of words. For example Daitarn comes from "Daitan" which means "brave", "fearless" etc. Gundam was prolly is a mix of play of words and references, like the "Gun" referring to the weapon and to Gundan which means "army": a robot so powerful to be like an army by itself.
