What is not mentioned at all that oftentimes it is also a sign of poor diet / deficiency of certain nutrients. Especially vitamin C is important for healthy gums. And eating lots of sugars or processed foods depletes that. Also a tooth oil can help considerably. And I know this doctor is not a big proponent of electric toothbrushes but since I started using a ultrasonic toothbrush (Philips Sonicare in my case) gums have improved a lot. I even "massage" the gums themselves with an extra head and they love it, they get nice and light pink and strong.

Thank you very much for your awesome dental advice Dr Nemeth. I just invested $600 in a new night guard. Wish you were closer to Chicago I would have made a consultation appointment with your office. There are only 2 LANAP certified Periodontists near Chicago in Skokie & Glenview. I think dentists don't refer pts to periodontists early enough because they want to make more money from pts that don't get effective early intervention or preventative treatment by periodontists. My dentist who also does Biohorizon implants says he doesn't refer to periodontists only endodontists! I think I'm going to refer myself to LANAP periodontist after I get my night guard. I don't have bleeding gums yet, but wore braces & have some some teeth with gum recession that I want treated before they progress any further.
Hi Dr. Joseph i have two questions: 1 - You've recommended a harder toothbrush, but all i read is to use an extra-soft one for people who has chronic gingivitis/receding gums. 2- What kind of chewing gum should one chew? With Xilitol? Thank you so much
Yea I'm now using a hard toothbrush, mainly to massage my gums at the gum line. I find it to be more effective. I tried with soft toothbrush at first for a few months but my dentist said my gums are still swollen so I'm now using a hard one.
I am not a doctor but personally I use a harder one and I massage the gums themselves with a separate toothbrush head. It gets worse the first time you do it I guess the inflammation is what is needed to then improve the gum health. After 2-3 days you will find your gums nice and light pink and the swelling is gone. At least that was my experience.
I have dentures and the back of my left gum is really sore - on the top of the gum. It hurts like the bejeezs when I first put my dentures in, but once in, after a few bites of food, it’s livable. But then taking them out sends me thru the ceiling. I’ve tried using salt water 3x /day for over a week now and also left the dentures out for three days to give it a rest. Nothing works. Soreness just doesn’t seem to want to go away. With the first set of dentures the soreness disappeared with the salt water treatment. Not this time. Anyone have tips?
I have bruxism and woke up with molar pain this week. Went to the dentist and I don't have a cavity nor an infection, he noticed my gums are a bit swollen around the tooth causing me pain and took an xray. Nothing bad going on with my nerves or the root of the tooth but it still hurts. Should I get my gums treated if there's nothing wrong with my tooth? It feels like the pain is coming from my tooth but maybe it's something with my gums?
I came here for some remedies and unfortunately number 6 is why my gums are swollen and feeling raw and sensitive. My dentist told me to rinse often with warm salty water.
@@starlite7785 what I meant to write was, everyone's face will swell up, some more than others due to all the drilling and sometimes digging underneath your teeth to clear out as much plaque/tartar that may have been missed when we brush our teeth. The numbing injections can cause our tongue to swell too and make us drool as it's like a sedative, as if your face has had a stroke 😅 So afterwards when all the numbing agents wear off and you start to feel your face, teeth and gums again you'll just feel a bit sore/sensitive, it's all temporary but anything to help the recovery process is appreciated.
@@starlite7785 what was your solution for it? I got an injection yesterday and once it wore off my gum is swollen and the tooth over the gum hurts like hell. It’s so much pain I barely can brush it & that’s not the tooth I had worked on.
Thank you, Dr Nemeth! What is the laser procedure for removing the bacteria called? I would like to make sure that my dentist has this capability. If not, I may need to search for a periodontist.
Hello Desi, the laser procedure is called LANAP. Many dentists have the capability to do the procedure. However, often times a periodontist will be more experienced in the procedure. Good luck with your treatment!
Had a stroke 2years ago They changed my medicine and they put ramipril and amlodpine and think u are right it causes my gum to be swallowing and a funny taste in my mouth. Thanks for this information doctor.
I was told my gums are inflamed (they are really red) underneath my dentures. They don’t hurt so I never noticed until a dentist bought it to my attention. He told me to remove them before bedtime. I was never told to do this ever. I’ve worn them for over 25 yrs. What can I do aside from that to get them back to normal. I’m scared 😟
Make sure you are cleaning your gums and keeping up with oral hygiene even though you don't have teeth. Also, use a soft bristle toothbrush and brush your dentures. Never sleep with them in. Your mouth needs to "breathe" and get a break from them. Soak them overnight in water with an efferdent tablet or just plain water. Hope this helps!
Just found your channel. I'm at the very start of treatment for very bad gum disease. I have had the first cleaning but need root planning treatment and been told need at least four treatments, but my question is should the hygienist have taken xrays as he hasn't even suggested it
A question to the dentist: Why is it that every time I go to any dentist, the very first recommendation is to do a Root Canal? This cost over $1200. Do they recommend it for revenue reason? Thank you
🙏for all your helpfull info (What to do begins at 2:15 ) …. Flossing, using a waterflosser twice a day is helpfull, brushing using a Soft toothbrush yet sometimes a little bit harder to get enough stimulation if you use bloodpressure meditation eventuelly swittch to no calcium and maybe change your toothpaste ( or use none) and get a good dental cleaning and of course avoid all smoking products …..😀🙏

Start with what you can afford. I bought powdered turmeric (organic preferably) rub it on your gums with a bit of water to make a paste. Costs $2.00 and goes along way. Chew on a piece of clove also. Rinse salt water and baking soda ( baking soda alkaline). Sorry this message is 11 mos from when you posted. Hopefully you found help!
my gums have always been inflamed since i got my braces back in feb. 2019 but i just finished brushing my teeth and my gum has detached my tooth and is in front of my wire. i don't want to touch it because i don't want to increase the bacteria there.
update, i guess it moved in my sleep bc it didn't move after i brushed last night. woke up a dark purple but is now a light purple after a couple of hours. I used salt water and drank more water since research told me a dry mouth is more susceptible to gum disease and i wasn't producing enough saliva to protect against the bacteria.
israa my sister's gums went down after her braces came off. Maybe it's just the fact that our gums are irritated by the metal and makes it harder for us to get each bit when brushing?
I've got pain in my left cheek and swollen red. I've been to the dentist and they only done regular clean But still having the same problem. I've tried in every way to clean my teeth and gums probably. And still get the pain
I am an active smoker and currently experiencing toothache on swollen gums. I started smoking less and really the pain slowly disappeared. thank you doctor greetings from Indonesia :)
I brush twice a day and use a waterpik prior to brushing. I rinse with salt water a few times a day. I have floss on my desk I use at least once a day. I still have horrible gum disease and bleeding I've been fighting for 1.5 years now. I quit smoking! I eat great! I drink water! And right now, I'm feeling an abscess starting up. It's so frustrating. I'm doing EVERYTHING and I still can't get this under control. :( BTW, I had a scaling and planing 1.5 years ago, too. And cleanings every 3-4 months before covid started. The gums haven't receded any further, but they still bleed a lot. I don't know what to do. My gums NEVER stopped bleeding even after the scaling and planing.
Check out PerioPeak in WA. Only one that does regenerative treatment on deep pockets using endoscopic tool so she can see what she’s doing and not cleaning under the gun blind. You can also look into calcium chips for your bleeding gums. Helps get the gums healthier. Do not do osseous surgery!

Hello doc I am from the uk.. I am always suffering with my gums and swollen gums. My dentist have told me I do have gum disease but here in the uk they have told me they can’t get rid of it.. is they anything I can do with the pain thanks
Thank you for the advice. I have a question. I have a habit of only flossing my front teeth which are visible when i smile. Could it be possible that I developed gingivitis through plaque buildup in my back teeth and it spread to my front teeth over time even though I do floss in that region of my mouth ? Another possibility might be that my gums are irritated because my wisdom teeth are coming out and are pushing on my teeth.
How about a swollen gum for a year now? A small one but it doesn't hurt. It hurts at first when I noticed it but the pain was gone only the bump is left, a soft swollen gum. Thanks doc for the answer. No dentist in our area now since coronavirus. Need help!
Let me guess that the swollen area of your mouth is exactly where you would put your cellphone when you're talking on it. I know 5 people currently with a swollen mouth AND a clogged ear. Sorry, i don't believe in that kind of coincidence. Our cellphones are pumping out invisible, deadly gamma rays that will eventually start killing mass quantities of humans. This is all 100% true & free advice. If you choose not to believe me, that's fine.....i've done my part.
My gums are swollen from the needles for needing nova Caine. I was getting a cap put on and my gums became infected. I’ve been on two different antibiotics and nothing has worked. I usually rinse with warm water and salt but it’s not getting better is there anything that anyone knows that will help !???
Thank you sooo much for this, I have final exams next week, and need to be studying, but my gum was swollen over my wisdom tooth, and I could barely even eat, and it's uncomfortable even when not eating. I thought the fizzy drinks I'd had earlier were the culprit bc I don't typically drink them and they were acidic+high in sugar, but I completely forgot I'd had popcorn yesterday, as I literally only had less than half a handful someone offered me, and I immediately went to floss after watching the popcorn part of this video, and lo and behold, a popcorn kernel bit came out from the gum after like 5 minutes. I'm just going to eat a lot more healthily overall, and stay away from the popcorn for a bit = ).
Yes I do have many recommendations for treatment at home. Check out this video, there are lots of options listed in the second half of the video. ua-cam.com/video/xFM6p-FybxQ/v-deo.html I hope this helps!
I have braces and some of parts of my gums have become extremely inflamed (they’re red) that my orthodontist has threatened to take my braces off (they are forcing me to see a specialist in august to get my braces removed if there’s been no improvement with some of my gums) majority of my gums are light pink but where my front teeth are they’re severely inflamed sometimes idk why when I always maintain brushing etc 😕

@@starlite7785 what I meant to write was, everyone's face will swell up, some more than others due to all the drilling and sometimes digging underneath your teeth to clear out as much plaque/tartar that may have been missed when we brush our teeth. The numbing injections can cause our tongue to swell too and make us drool as it's like a sedative, as if your face has had a stroke 😅
So afterwards when all the numbing agents wear off and you start to feel your face, teeth and gums again you'll just feel a bit sore/sensitive, it's all temporary but anything to help the recovery process is appreciated.
@@starlite7785 what was your solution for it? I got an injection yesterday and once it wore off my gum is swollen and the tooth over the gum hurts like hell. It’s so much pain I barely can brush it & that’s not the tooth I had worked on.
I have an inflammation cause I am not good at brushing my teeth, my dentist appointment is tomorrow and I'm am 100% going to be denied braces😢
I still have red gums even tho i brush, floss & use mouth wash everyday
Yea I do the same I bruh and floss and mouthwash but they are still red
I also do the same but it still swollen. I dont know what to do anymore 😭
did you get rid of it?
Bro im going to a dentist tommorow i have had like 3 months to get away the red gum, and it's not gone bruhhh😭
Me too and it annoys me!!!
I have had the first cleaning but need root planning treatment and been told need at least four treatments, but my question is should the hygienist have taken xrays as he hasn't even suggested it
I’m in west Palm beach Florida, can you recommend a dr here that uses your technique?
You are just beautiful ❤️
@@roybarry1631 and you are weird
@@K3jim your not weird enough
Hello, Dr. Joseph
Please, tell me when I can use the ultrasonic brush after LANAP?
Thanks as always Dr Nemeth! 🙏🏼
You're very welcome!
This is very informative. Thank you.
Bruh I had the weirdest mouth before I got braces. I had a over bite, swollen gums, crooked teeth, and yellow teeth. Now they're looking way better
A question to the dentist:
Why is it that every time I go to any dentist, the very first recommendation is to do a Root Canal? This cost over $1200. Do they recommend it for revenue reason?
Thank you
Don't believe them... They have scared many ppl and those ppl are absolutely fine without root canal
Can you please make a video talking about not having to use toothpaste?
More great info from the doc!
Thanks so much Beth
🙏for all your helpfull info (What to do begins at 2:15 ) …. Flossing, using a waterflosser twice a day is helpfull, brushing using a Soft toothbrush yet sometimes a little bit harder to get enough stimulation if you use bloodpressure meditation eventuelly swittch to no calcium and maybe change your toothpaste ( or use none) and get a good dental cleaning and of course avoid all smoking products …..😀🙏
Water flosser is key! I have been using a water flosser since Dec 2019.
And you fixed it ?
@@PokemonShinyLover Waterpik
Thanks this helped me a lot ! Is important too floss or brush after every meal !
my dentist said to just brush down does that help?
-like to Get all the bacteria out
I’ve been in pain for years - sad truth is I can’t afford it am in tears now I m only 37 and have neglected myself have 2 young kids my top gums are al swollen it’s past 1 in the morning and am here crying praying for a miracle I just want my mouth to be healthy so I can get to smile with me kids again
@@uhitskimi same ever since i have got braces i got gum disease.
israa my sister's gums went down after her braces came off. Maybe it's just the fact that our gums are irritated by the metal and makes it harder for us to get each bit when brushing?
Kiminofavorito maybe but my Ortho just took off my wire so I can brush and floss and I never had swollen gums before braces
This is literally me! I had my braces for a year and some months and my gums are still swollen
I've got pain in my left cheek and swollen red. I've been to the dentist and they only done regular clean
But still having the same problem. I've tried in every way to clean my teeth and gums probably. And still get the pain
This was extremely helpful.
What do you use instead of toothpaste?
I am an active smoker and currently experiencing toothache on swollen gums.
I started smoking less and really the pain slowly disappeared.
thank you doctor
greetings from Indonesia
:)
i have weak enamel and i feel like i need to use enamel strengthening toothpaste. ever since i started using that i've had no issues.
BTW, I had a scaling and planing 1.5 years ago, too. And cleanings every 3-4 months before covid started. The gums haven't receded any further, but they still bleed a lot. I don't know what to do.
My gums NEVER stopped bleeding even after the scaling and planing.
Might have tartar under the gums.
Try Jesus talk to him about your gums
@@deanagatlin7901 at this point I will 😢
Check out PerioPeak in WA. Only one that does regenerative treatment on deep pockets using endoscopic tool so she can see what she’s doing and not cleaning under the gun blind. You can also look into calcium chips for your bleeding gums. Helps get the gums healthier. Do not do osseous surgery!
This is how I am. More cleaning seems to make it worse.
Thanks you again for everything God bless you and good job
Thank you for the tip doctor ❤️
👍
DR. Nemeth I would like to know if I can use a natural toothpaste like a organic himalaya toothpaste
Can I rinse my mouth with salt and warm water?
That helps do it everyday
Yes mine go down with saltwater
@@leteffagalloway6216 I'll try that now
Sure suree i need to do this😭 i hope it helps, damnn my mom say dont floos from now on, she say teeth can not be too clean and always floss...🤦♀️ i dont know what i will listen to anymore, the dentists in youtube or my mother never floss but her gums is always healthy😭✨

Hello doc I am from the uk.. I am always suffering with my gums and swollen gums. My dentist have told me I do have gum disease but here in the uk they have told me they can’t get rid of it.. is they anything I can do with the pain thanks

Sir Joseph you really great perosn, .

Thanks I have a swollen gum right now and I think I know what it is.
I brush my teeth and accidentally hit my gums and it hurt and it hurts! Help :(
It’s only like a light red on my down gum
Same. How u removed the red light color from ur gums?
Bella M I’m not sure if for me it was so serious but now I don’t have it. It was a months ago, I just let it heal by it self
tk lmao I’m fine now it healed last month
So, informative!
Thank you very much!!
Well of course. If you don’t floss everywhere your gums are inflamed.
You should floss them all
What do you use for your tooth cleansing...? OIL pulling?
Where is this wonderful doctor located? And when you say no toothpaste? What do you use? Thanks 😊
I’ve had braces for 4 years and I brush and floss 4 times a day since my gums are so inflated and this isn’t doing anything please help
Same and I can’t try floss because my gums are blocking me
Same and my dentist always gets mad at me and say to “brush better “ like I’m not doing that 😐
Idk what to do at this point😭😭
Try saltwater, I tried it and the swelling went down 😊
Zara any specific instructions or just pour salt in water ?
I went to the dentist for a cleaning and now my gums have swollen for a few days
My gums are swollen from the needles for needing nova Caine. I was getting a cap put on and my gums became infected. I’ve been on two different antibiotics and nothing has worked. I usually rinse with warm water and salt but it’s not getting better is there anything that anyone knows that will help !???
Hlo plz help me....i had a painful gums...nt exactly in gums but there s extra flesh which is swollen💔💔
Me too I am dying 😭
Do you just brush your teeth with no toothpaste or do you use a replacement? How do you prevent teeth yellowing then?
I just used some Dr tishners & activated charcoal and that did it my gums are swollen
I had a question, can you recommend any home treatments for gingivitis, my dentist is still closed because of the pandemic situation, thank you
Yes I do have many recommendations for treatment at home. Check out this video, there are lots of options listed in the second half of the video.

Just got my braces off today but my gums are swollen but It's not to bad
Same
I have braces and some of parts of my gums have become extremely inflamed (they’re red) that my orthodontist has threatened to take my braces off (they are forcing me to see a specialist in august to get my braces removed if there’s been no improvement with some of my gums) majority of my gums are light pink but where my front teeth are they’re severely inflamed sometimes idk why when I always maintain brushing etc 😕
This was very helpful info.
I wish I lived closer so I could visit the office for dental treatments.
Thanks for sharing 👍
My dentist says on water flosser to not use high pressure because it can tear the gums up.
