How to tie an Adams Dry Fly

  • The Adams is probably one of the best all round dry flies, I tend to tie the parachute version in different colours but any form of blue/grey dubbing can be used. Make sure that the proportion of the body and tail are correct as are the hackles with the hook gape.
The fly can be fished static or skated across the surface using a floating line. I have had lots of success fishing this fly on rivers and the takes can be very aggressive.

That's a good tip on setting up the hackle feathers, I'll remember it!

Please folks who watch great UA-cam videos, leave a thumbs up or down even, it is helpful on both counts and creators like Lindsay who in my opinion is in the top ten presenters for fly tying, will get some benefit from the free information they provide us. It is the least thing we can do for great information.
Now the pattern. Lindsay thanks for a couple of good points. First I had never seen the two hackle feathers bound into the correct angle before wrapping. I think that has to be helpful!!
Also you touched on showcase flies vs fishing flies.
So many new tyers are embarrassed about showing their flies online and I think it is ashame. So many folks fail to understand right away, that flies do not have to look perfect (To us Humans) in order to catch fish. That is a fact! Just keep tying and keep fishing and keep learning. Thanks Lindsay

Cheers Kerry, a very good point about flies for catching anglers and flies for catching fish.

Its a blend that was created for me by Andrew Ellis from Troutstalkers. There is a multitude of colours its a really interesting blend. The colours include red, blue and yellow. It is still quite subtle though.
