Tying a humpy in size 20 is not trivial. Impressive as ever Mr.McPhail.
Thats a challenging fly to tie. I see people starting with the wing and ending with cutting the hair butts in the neck. But this is the right way to tie a humpy. Fantastic as always.
Having just tied a box of small dries up I hope folks realise how much skill it takes to tie a fly like this #20, well done pal.
my brain absolutely loves small flies. My eye sight, not so much. Humpys always fascinated me. They don't seem to mimic anything I have seen in the wild but fish take them. Beautiful job as usual. Stay safe and thank you from one who has been continually learning for more years than I can count.

Beautifully well done again Davie. I like the Humpy as much as anyone, and have learned that the trout in the creeks I fish prefer different colors. Rainbows like a yellow bodied Humpy, the browns prefer red, the brookies like purple and the cutthroat like a burgandy. A tyer can tie these in any color thread they want and experiment with them. Fantastic looking fly as always sir. I have learned so much from you.
Nice , I like hump’s . There a very underrated searching pattern , it seems they have fallen out of favor with the advent of foam . Personally I like them better they float like a cork and you can tie them in a multitude of colors and sizes. Thanks for sharing
The first time I caught a trout on a dry fly, I was using a humpy. I've always found them difficult to tie, though. I think this will help a lot, though I don't think I'm ready for #20 hooks yet haha. Lovely work, Davie.

Thanks very much Davie . The humpy is one of my all time favorite flies. Never tried tying it down to a size 20. I always have trouble with the proportion of the length of the deer hair to get the wing sized correctly.
I live in the borders and fish the Witeadder which has small brownies about 6 inches mostly, they are great fun but have to use very small flies, great to see ya using small hooks.
I've tried tying very small dry flies before, none came out as beautiful as this one, you make it look effortless!
As usual you can make even a simple fly look like a masterpiece. You are and have been my inspiration and I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you and your videos and how far my own tying has come because of you. Thank you Davey and please keep em coming.

Thanks Mr. McPhail! A favorite search pattern and, in #16 yellow with bleached elk, the best yellow sally. As a double in big sizes on 2XL, a passable yellow stonefly or hopper.

Never thought to tie that pattern in such a small size, my #20s tend to be very simple and sparse but I love the idea of being able to fish such a buoyant and visible fly in such a small size. Will tired these up for sure in the future. I am currently at west branch delaware with the wooden drift boat I helped my friend build for the rest of the week, and have managed to catch a small brown on a march brown emerger yesterday, hopefully the big boys start rising soon would love to hook into one. Many of the flies in my box I have learned to tie from watching your videos, hope you are well, best wishes from NY

Davie I tried this style but I could never get the length right on the start so I tie the wing in as a seperate step. I may try this again, I've been tying #16 with elk hair and moose tail. Will try this again tonight. Thank you.

Davie what do you think of Dr slick products? seem kind of expensive are they worth it? also do you just chuck your scissors or have you a way to keep them sharp? Many thanks I never tire of watching your amazing demonstrations.

Dr Slicks are good scissors and used by many tyers, I have have used a couple of sets over the years myself..The way I use scissors though I go through them and I like the 4 inch razor scissor which many companies sell from Tiemco to Veniards all are good some last longer than others but it's up to you what one you would like to buy..I'm glad you enjoy the videos and thank you for the kind words...

I do wear +2 reading glasses though only in the last couple of years as I'm getting on now...I do get my eyes tested every couple of years and I don't get glasses as they keep saying I don't need any...I'm glad you liked the fly...

For dry-flies, one could argue that the top of the fly really does not matter because fish cant see it. For example in this fly the deer is a very fragile material which could be easily damaged and therefore ruin the whole fly. Even though it may have not been necessary material to use in the first place beacause the fish can't see it... What do you think?

Davie, A beautiful, simplified version of the Humpy. Do you think that this "small" Humpy version would work okay on slightly bigger hooks, say up to size 14 or so? Thank you for all of the fine videos.

Yes it can be tyed in bigger sizes in this style as all you have to do is pick a piece of deer hair that suits the size you want to tye...I'm glad you enjoy the videos...All the very best Davie..
What’s the difference between a dry and a wet fly?
Very nice Davie. May I ask, what insect is it meant to represent? Or is it an all-round dry ‘bug’ as such?
Mayfly but can be an attractor pattern. I wonder if Davie has done a Royal Humpy.
It’s a high floating rough water pattern to imitate several bugs. More of an attractor that floats like a cork. Most popular colors are red or yellow. Bigger sizes are tied with 2 hackles(grizzly and coachman brown).

As Kerri and etamaman, said it's an attractor like pattern and can give the impression of a few flies on the water, they have been used for decades and are as popular today as they have always been especially in the USA..I'm glad you liked the fly...

Makes sense, I guessed as much, it looks that type of fly and a great looking fly it is too. Reminds me of a little coachman or something along those lines. Would work the best for mayfly too I'm sure. Thanks for the responses. Charlie (Ireland)

Hello Mr. McPhail, I am hoping you can help out and tie a fly for me. It is a pattern from a friend who was a great flyfishing guide , rod maker, fly tyer and all around gentleman. He has fallen ill and has some health issues, which now prohibit him from any activities at all. The fly is called the "River Ranger" and is published in a book "Trout flies of the East, by Schollmyer and Leeson. The gentleman who I am asking you to tie this for is Wayne Martin of the forks Fly shop in Caledon Ontario Canada.
I think he would be delighted to see this video if it is possible.
