Tripe is used in a soup called Menudo in many southwestern and Latino households for celebrations like New Years day, birthdays and many family gatherings. In Mexico, they say Menudo can cure hangovers. This soup consists of tripe, hominy, red chili, and onions. Sometimes pigs feet are mixed in. I cook my pigs feet on the side because some family members don't like them, so you can add them to your bowl if you like. On the side are chopped onions, lemon or lime wedges, chili pepper flakes and dried oregano. My family just likes the lemon or lime wedges and chopped onions. The lemon or lime wedges are squeezed into your bowl of soup. Some people also like finely shredded cabbage as a side to be added. Sorry for the long explanation, that's just how I roll. Peace 🕊️
I remember my paternal Grandma eating chicken feet. Try as she might, no one else joined her lol. My 21 yo Granddaughter in law makes biscuits and gravy that is REALLY good. She makes a lot of this type of thing.
Can I interject here as an American who has lived in the UK for nearly 40 years? Shepherd's pie is made with minced (ground) lamb. The same pie made with ground beef is actually called "cottage pie" and has been a staple here since the 18th century. So, it was not invented in the US. 🙃
Chilling are still a thing. Most people don't eat them but there is still a very decent market for them. My mother used to make cornmeal pancakes and we ate it with syrup.
Some of the recipes were what I had growing up...cornmeal mush, scrapple. We would drive to a nearby town for cracklings. We'd get them in a brown paper bag while still warm. Some would be nice and tender. Some had the crunch. The bag would get greasy from the cracklings.
Such disrespect in the announcer. Sorry, but people did what they had to to survive. We still eat some of these things. And if things keep going the way they are you will be happy to have anything to eat.
In New Orleans we call pasta sauce red gravy and head cheese is hogs head cheese, hogs head cheese is usually the first dish to be eaten up at social gatherings
My grandmothers were okay with cooking but being from rural Oklahoma they got most of their groceries from the local town supermarkets or from their gardens which they had big seasonal gardens with many vegetables and fruits as well but while not great cooks they did their best with what they had and what they could afford when they didn't have a lot of money but thanks for the great food memories of the past thank you.🇺🇲🥩🍅🧅🌽🥕🍖🇺🇲
hog maw is still a thing in a German region, and former chancellor Helmut Kohl loved to "impress" his foreign guests with it. Look up Pfälzer Saumagen.
We had cornmeal mush for breakfast and potato pancakes for lunch and /or supper in the 1950's. Mom would make a large pot of cornmeal mush for breakfast. What was left over was cooked into a loaf with a bit of hamburger and fried in left over bacon grease.
I’m sorry you had that experience. They must not have been properly cleaned or cooked. If preparing correctly, they don’t have much of a flavor profile on their own but take on the seasoning and spices that are cooked with them.
Now with the kind of inflation that we have in 2024 , you are lucky enough to afford butter, milk or flour let alone any seasonings unless you have government assistance.
The day Russia invaded Ukraine my husband and I started shopping for our stockpile and we also bought our first freezer. By June we had 2 years worth of food, 3 freezers and a generator. Now we only buy food that's on sale for a reasonable price and usually by the case. Oh and BTW, did you know that a lot of US military families collect SNAP benefits, because they're not paid enough to support a family? Don't look down on people who collect government assistance, you might need their help some day.
I am bot agrandma or even a mother but O temeber all the amazing meals my gtandmothers taight me how to make l. When I cook all these family meals so many people are surprises and happy someone knows how to cook these. Alwayd gets raves.

I grew up on a farm in Germany while my dad was in the Air Force, cracklins just cut off the pig and then deep fried. God I miss those days
Crackling cornbread is a favorite of mine.
Raisin and rice, please search "kedgeree" from Victorian England. It came from India. Excellent dish.

Waiting for creamed-chipped beef on toast.

Corneal mush rocks! You must hate grits too. 🤣🤣
Hog maw was like haggis. What is wrong with you? All these are great! So is scrapple!
I agree. No respect for good food.

Thank you for always bringing such positive energy! ❤️
Everyone was fed, that is what matters. My mother made food out of nothing. We were fine. 😊

We call cracklin's "piggy puffs".
Lamb is too expensive in the usa so we use ground beef
Need chapters so I can more easily search for meal ideas
If looking for inexpensive meals, I enjoy watching Dollar Tree Dinners and Mexican Cooking on a Budget. Good luck finding those recipes.
I had chitlins one time. It took a week to get the taste out of my mouth. It is not good don't do it
