Same thing happened to '69-'70 Boss 302 Mustang owners. I beat that nonsense by registering my all options '69 Boss 302 Mustang with combination license plates and later put used car dealer plates on it after I opened my classic/vintage vehicles shop. I bought the car new at TASCA Ford in RI. I still have it today and it's registered as an Antique Auto. Insurance is fairly cheap despite it's ultra high value..

Absolutely, and Olds durability. I had a 72 Cutlass Supreme when I was 19, 350 4 barrel, it was a very strong and smooth car. At one point I upgraded the trans with a Turbo 400 out of a Grand Prix, and she would snap 2nd gear rubber consistently under heavy throttle. Allot of people don't realize how expensive it was getting (and sometimes just not possible) to get insurance on a 400 plus cube musclecar as a young male after about 1969. The Pontiac Tempest was another GM route to get muscle under the radar as well. Insurance companies classified the 70 GT-37 Tempest as a standard passenger car even with the 400 4 speed like mine. They had no way to differentiate the motor trans combo by the Vin. .....Now a GTO? Different story right off the bat, 3 times the cost to insure if you were 19 !

That is cool that you were able to witness and experience all that. I graduated in 82, and by the mid 80s most of the special optioned muscle cars were already in collectors hands, with a few lesser priced High option performance cars still being found by lucky kids with enough cash. Still they were wrecking them at a good pace! A buddy of mine smashed a pretty nice 1969 W-3o into a pole...very sad. I remember a kid in my class who smashed a very nice 69 Superbee 383 4 speed, and another who smashed his 69 Firebird 400 into a telephone pole. Yup you do not see very many of these cars outside of car shows now.

    Goodday C & Z,
You are kidding, as Australia's biggest Oldsmobile I have seen this W 31 race before & it is wicked.
I think this is the first time you have featured this Torino & yeah it would have to be the quickest Fomoco in a long time.
That Fomoc worked hard for the win, the W 31 wad nipping at its heels, considering a 80 cubic inch advantage to the Fomoco.
They are both gorgeous Muscle Car but I am 1 eyed Oldsmobile.
    Hoping for 3 races.

Lets examine the race the Cutlas weighs 3640 pounds w/driver, the Torino weighs 4108 pounds w/driver, thats a 468 pound weight advantage too the cutlass, advantage Cutlass. The fords 429 is 69 cubic inches larger than the Olds, advantage Ford. Both cars are equally geared, but the Cutlass has an automatic, advantage Cutlas . If we take the weight of the vehicles and the MPH each vehicle ran the Cutlass made 305 hp and the Torino made 395 hp. The Moroso Power Speed Calculator says that with optimum traction the Cutlass should run 12.5 seconds and the Torino should run 12.10 seconds. NHRA Stock Eliminator classes are based on HP/Weight ratios so that any vehicle in a given class is competing fairly against a comparable HP/Weight ratio. This is what makes Stock such a competitive class, I strongly urge you to attend a Divisional points race in your area.

The manuals were much quicker and allowed more torque and HP to the wheels. Modern manuals are geared taller to lose to the automatics but back then they were geared very closely.

Dodge and Plymouth also sold well, again in mid-size sedans & coupes. Ford’s Galaxie 500 and LTD models did well, the Torino didn’t sell as strongly. However many had 429s of any specification could not be very many, making them uncommon if not outright rare, again depending on the definition. My Plymouth took an early lead off the (unofficial) line one dark night, but when the 429 finally found traction (in 3rd gear) it started gaining, and my 727 TorqueFlite could not stay ahead without a similar massive torque feed (not on hand from my small block Mopar).

What I don't understand is how UA-cam videos show that a 1970 Red Torino 429 scj can vary with times of 13.71 vs Red Cuba with 440 of 13.78 on here to another 1970 Torino 429 scj of 12.93 to a Transam of 13.23 to a 1970 Red Torino 429scj of 13.64 vs a Camaross396 of 13.59 to a 1970 Torino 429scj with 13.08 vs Olds w-31 which wound up doing real bad so didn't write down time to finally a 1970 Torino 429scj of 12.72 to a 1969 Yenko 427 Camaro of 12.0 then 12.59. Then it was mentioned that Motor Trend ran a 1970 Torino 429 scj with 4 speed and driver to 4206 lbs. to a 13.99 time in Feb. 1970. These times ranged so badly that I thought maybe read end as one guy stated that stock was geared 3.91 with Detroit Locker gearing being 4.30 but that couldn't be right as narrator advised 1970 Red Torino with 429scj had 4.57 factory gearing for 12.72 race vs 1969 Yenko 427 Camaro so something else had to account for difference of 1.27 seconds so what?????

    • @RobertBrown-sd5dy

Pure stock races are allowed to run different pistons within .030. Pure stock races they're allowed to mill heads to be within compression limit. Also, from the factory the Holley is really tuneable. Plus, better tires and race gas. The Motor Trend article you quote I believe had different rear ratio... 3.91.
