    This is how you make a good disturbing character and NOT a screaming, murderhoboing edgelord.

    • @romankvapil9184
      @romankvapil9184 3 роки тому +17

      @Buddha UwU No, his whole theme is about the dynamic elements of life and how unfair it can be. That there is both suffering AND pleasure. For this character, it's one and the same. He makes it clear that doesn't push it on others, and lets his actions be decided by the dice. Yes, he is a sadomasochist, he makes no allusions about it. He even says it upfront.
      What makes him interesting is how personable/charming the character is. He is a worshipper of the Lord of Midnight, suffering is part of the worship, but not the entirety of it. He doesn't just go about spreading it in such a way it comes off as just edglording it. But that he truly believes in what he's doing is righteous and values in it. That's what makes him so interesting.

    • @DaxterL
      @DaxterL 3 роки тому +11

      @Buddha UwU I wouldn't say he's badly written, he is simple yes, but he is a well written simple character, just like the doom slayer. Also to the other comment, yes the edge is there but edginess isn't inherently bad, it is either fun or boring. When it comes to bad and boring edginess the story of the "he just looks at you with his empty doll like eyes" comes to mind, a disruptive player constantly nagging how everything is unfair. But with this character i see a lot of roleplay potential especially since he worships an evil god and would like to convert his party.

      There's a character in the Chinese novel Outlaws of the Marsh (The Water Margin) who actually has the exact same thing happen to him. He was originally a military general, but was forced to shave his head and become a monk to escape persecution for beating a local butcher to death with three punches. Why did he kill the guy? He was in a tavern drinking with some friends when he heard a woman crying loudly in the next room. He asks her why she's crying, and she explains that the butcher offered to pay for her mother's burial if she became his concubine, but then the butcher's wife drove her out and now the butcher is demanding they pay back the money he never gave them. Anyways, after hiding out in the abbey on Mount Wutai for awhile, he sneaks out to the town and gets drunk. The monks try to lock him out until he's sober, but he smashes through the gates and proceed to beat up the offending monks. The abbot gives him a second chance, but eventually he gets drunk again, gets locked out again, smashes the gate, again, beats a bunch of monks, again, and even destroys a sacred statue. The abbot finally sends him away to another temple, far away in the capital.

    My character began her story with a similar outlook on taking lives. She is a Barbarian (Path of the Zealot) with the Acolyte background, a devotee of Altea, the Silver Angel of Charity, essentially a battle nun. The faith of Altea preaches that Charity is the greatest of all virtue, and Greed the gravest of all sins. If she encountered a person whom she believed to be 'tainted' by greed, she would not hesitate to end their life, for the only absolution for one tainted by greed is to be sent to Altea for forgiveness. Some would say that she was without mercy for the greedy, but it was quite the opposite; she kills the greedy because she wants to save their souls, out of sheer compassion and love for all of Altea's children.

    I once had a ghast "monk", monk in the sense that it just used it's teeth and finger claws to rip and break whatever he was fighting.
    It used it's horrible stench to sicken it's prey, then give them a stunning "fist"(claw/bite)/ along with ghoul touch.
    Anyway, it would take out other undead, or pillage graveyards to eat rotten meat, or if he killed a living creature, he would tare off pieces of them, carry it with him and eat it when it was sufficiently rotten.
    Also. Sometimes he would use the limbs/body parts as a bludgeoning weapon, to tenderize it, especially against other undead, to get the flavor of decay on it.
    A party of undead, evil clerics, true/pale/dread necromancer's, blackguards, other evil-doers and death worshipers is actually really fun.

    Oh, this character needs to team up with my psychopathic warlock/assassin. He’s such a weapon to be honed and aimed. They’d get along marvelously.
    (Currently using said warlock/assassin as an npc, because why not re-use a good character? He’s playing the party like a fiddle.)

    Knowing how I play my character if he was in my party I would use him as an ultimatum in bargaining (with the other players/pcs consent ofcourse.) It would go something like this "surrender or we will let him loose," followed by pointing at the smiling scary pain addict. Then again I'd also make sure that my character couldn't receive his "tender" ministrations too.

    Masterful storytelling! I loved how the author incorporated the rules into the story and also how I loved the story but hated the narrator. It was a fun game guessing as to the class of the narrator, but for now I’ve settled on barbarian/monk multi class.

    “Suffered the terrible indignity of watching both of his parents die at a young age.” That has got to be the most nonchalant way of describing the archetypal tragic backstory ever.

    Also; Nagito Komaeda much?? With his despair and your character's pain obsession

    I had this dragonborn cleric of a deity of Law, Order and Fire who had a policy of not letting things go to waste. He'd be the party chef on adventures, forage the area for useful ingredients and spices and serving everyone unique meals, like Gnoll Stew Surprise, Fried Otyugh in Gelatinous Sauce or BarlBeQue. His religious book also contained several Dragonborn recipes the party could have used in the event of my cleric's untimely demise with explicit request of being eaten should the event occur. The rest of the party wasn't amused.

    Seeing a gnoll getting punched in the face reminds me the one time in BG1 that one time on the gnoll stronghold. when one of my friends a human fighter had his 2 handed weapon broken and started decking every gnoll in the stronghold in the face knocking every one of them unconscious. Funny part is He did not know that happened and me and my friends bestowed him the title gnoll puncher. He became a running gag whenever we confront a gnoll

      @Buddha UwU and player vs player battles just don't happen. It can ruin a players experience and it can make them not want to play Dnd at all. Plus, his character was in no way evil, he didnt just kill everything for no reason. Now there is an evil character way worse then this on this channel but I assure you, this character is refreshing from vile evil, and goody big boy scouts

    I can kind of understand the mindset of such a being, to a point. Without pain, how can you identify what pleasure is? Without pleasure, how can you appreciate the feeling of pain fading away as your body restores itself to the state it was in before?
    It has been said many times, "Pain is the best teacher." How does a child learn NOT to put its hand on the hot stove? By doing exactly that and finding out WHY his or her mother or father warned them not to do so. When learning how to fight, pain keeps the memories of how you got into that Ouch! state, and how to avoid it in the future.
    Stub your toe enough times on the door frame, and you learn to wear slippers as you walk around the house (since if you're clumsy or absentminded enough to stub your toe more than twice in one hour in the same spot you're probably going to do it again anyway).
    Doesn't stop him from being a nut, though.
    The character was well-made, and well-acted.

    5e Half-Orc Warlock. Great Old One patron. Quite mad. Not insane, just mad. Very intelligent skill monkey. Acrobatic stunts combined with repelling eldritch blast made for some hilarious battlefield repositioning...such as run sliding underneath the BBEG and sending him 10' into the air. But falling damage is still damage and a prone BBEG is an easier foe to deal with.
