I had a 5e tiefling warlock of zon kuthon had a habit of casting darkness on my opponents and proceeding to use his bound rapier to poke holes in their limbs until they gave up

This story is ridiculously interesting, I love seeing into this character perspective, he Is so blissfully insane and also neutral. He knows that the people around him do not understand his reasoning but goes with it anyway, and actually is able to do good things despite how others view his choice to worship his God. So incredibly well done! I get adrenaline and fear and intense feelings when listening to this story :D

I love how pure Xaldin is! He finds the good in all the bad that he receives gladness for pain and doesn't attack non enemies or fellow adventures nor does he force his beliefs upon them. What he does is a messy version of what a stereotypical Goody Goody Hero would do. He tries to save those that he can through pain. Whilst twisted it may be he truely does want to help save others though pain and convert their faith so they might be place in one who can better guide them. other Adventuring parties do what he does in the name of "justice' and 'peace' and 'goodness' but he really and truely means it he wants to save people through pain and has succeeded in doing so with the wizard.
I played a pathfinder inquisitor that acted a lot like xaldin except he was more concerned with destruction of evil. I played him like an actual medieval inquisitor.

He "Purifies' them with his touch but also knows to refrain from such things against those who don't need it. Xaldin is Psychopathic with the intent of helping others. While an Inquisitor ( no offense to you) is usually just a force to further spread Fear and Cruelty and are more about Destroying People than actually saving them. He's about conversion not destruction.

I can only imagine the upright fear Astosham and Xaldin would have together. Xaldin beating everything to a pulp and Astosham bringing them back from the dead, and when it comes to Xaldin's time but still wants to purify the world... Astosham revives him as a Deathless.
I really like how the story is told in the PoV of the character, not even referencing he's in a game other than "roll of fate", other than that it feels very much like your listening to a first hand experience, I love the way this is told.
Creepy but I am also hooked. I want to know the end of the story hopefully his comrades start to see that he can be a great ally. Most don’t see a necessary evil and only shun away from it
Exactly, He is a very well written character, he truly does want to help people even if his methods are very unorthodox. He doesn't really force his ideas onto other people unless it must be done like with the wizard. Although he would be over the moon If he could convince his party mates and people around him to convert. He understands the good and bad of both sides and marvels in pain and pleasure. Although insane to say the least he does get results that no one else would be willing to get. A great character indeed.
As a Dm myself, I love this character. Both the thought, the way he actually portrays him, and the fact that you can tell the emotion and meticulous thought put into his actions. Amazing character and amazing rp.

Because it's different sitting here with some distance, than hearing someone at the table playing up this sort of character. I can imagine sitting at the table, as one of your close friends who you gamed with for a long time just sort of ... dissolves into this bare-knuckle brawler sadist, who is unfailingly polite and personable despite the subject matter. I honestly don't know if I could accept "it's just a game, bro" and look at that person the same again.

@@joaquinmarichal GMs can get a pass a great many times since it's their JOB to play the disturbing/villainous characters. Note well, there is a line, and there are numerous stories of GMs crossing it. A lot of those stories seem to fall on the side of "that guy is messed up" so... I present that as further evidence bolstering the idea I put out there. I dunno. There is a small folder I have of ideas which seem like they'd be cool, but I would NEVER play because if I brought them to the table? I'd probably get kicked out before the end of the first session. (I wrote up a wizard, once, who was really into anatomical details. Not in a dirty sense, more like the sort of person to really sit down and take sketches down of muscle and bone structure of various creatures... largely in the interests of understanding the means of translating that into creating a mechanical being. Cool idea? Yeah, right up until he insists on skinning something and winds up sitting down and taking a long... long... time staring and prodding at the dead thing so he can take detailed notes.)
They see a character *made* to be disturbing, and yet can’t ignore that he is better (morally) than his fellows. He merely breaks their bodies, momentary pain to save their souls from eternal torture, they proudly condemn their foes to eternal torture.

Torture is only ever justifiable under the most extreme of circumstances such as war, or in the prevention of massive catastrophe ala the situation in "Unthinkable", and even then it remains an evil act, just a necessary evil that shouldn't be employed lightly or be brushed off and forgotten after the fact.
As a dm I love having players play evil characters. It really sucks that bad players put such a stigma on them. You get the right player and even a Chaotic evil alignment can be super fun. People often forget that even evil people still have people they favor and enjoy being around.

For some reason, I suspect that this story sounds more like a story than an adventure If not...... I'd be annoyed sitting through this as a player. Like, it's a good story, but would be a terrible adventure session for everyone else

Just the whole part of "yeah, I'll hand the evildoer over to the torturer because that's what he deserves" *witnesses the torture first hand* "oh god, no one deserves this, you must stop this at once!"
I legitimately had some trouble telling what's going on in this story IRL & in-game... Nice ending, pretty sure now that this characters alignment is chaotic good or chaotic neutral.
I played a very similar type of character that was a black dragonborn monk of the long death who follows the teachings of a death God and works as a hired killer who embraces death and pain and seeks to spread as much suffering as he can on both his targets and enemies that threatened his party
It would make sense in most of these worlds for gods to be able to have some effect on their followers mental states and health, maybe even unintentionally. Part of me feels like his god chose him due to his starting position (being regularly beaten) then fed and twisted mental illness in him.
i did mock play of how i would play him. he is redemption paladin who is way to obsessed with getting hurt. and does not really attack but forces people to attack him with compell duel spells and sanctuary on allies
For me it's Sir Todd Barker and barber/doctor. He was once a propper and respected gentlemen who was a very well known doctor who was married to a beautiful half elf songstress who ran a follower shop that sold medicinal herbs and a daughter that loved to take in wounded animals and heal and mend them. Sir Todd was a thin but fit young man that had a talent for healing using natural herbs to make medicine. His wife a young half elf maiden who had moon white hair and bright blue Safire eyes his moon and stars as he'd call her. His daughter was kind taking after her mother's eleven heritage with her beauty but gaining the dark raven hair and pale skin of her father. My dear Autumn night. Sadly this was to not last

Sometimes I can't tell if the party's distrust and disgust of Xaldin is just the characters or the players themselves wanting this guy's player out.
I can assure you that my fellow players absolutely loved Xaldin, but their characters had mixed feelings about him for obvious reason. :)

I played a very similar type of character that was a black dragonborn monk of the long death who follows the teachings of a death God and works as a hired killer who embraces death and pain and seeks to spread as much suffering as he can on both his targets and enemies that threatened his party

It would make sense in most of these worlds for gods to be able to have some effect on their followers mental states and health, maybe even unintentionally. Part of me feels like his god chose him due to his starting position (being regularly beaten) then fed and twisted mental illness in him.

Part 1 still needed a link update for part 3 as of last night.
For me it's Sir Todd Barker and barber/doctor. He was once a propper and respected gentlemen who was a very well known doctor who was married to a beautiful half elf songstress who ran a follower shop that sold medicinal herbs and a daughter that loved to take in wounded animals and heal and mend them. Sir Todd was a thin but fit young man that had a talent for healing using natural herbs to make medicine. His wife a young half elf maiden who had moon white hair and bright blue Safire eyes his moon and stars as he'd call her. His daughter was kind taking after her mother's eleven heritage with her beauty but gaining the dark raven hair and pale skin of her father. My dear Autumn night. Sadly this was to not last
