This is what I know as "pone" bread. My dad always made pone bread instead of cutting out biscuits...much easier and faster! I myself have been making this bread for upwards of 45 years. Although I never use lard in my pone or my biscuits, just Martha White Self Rising Flour and whole buttermilk. Ya can't beat it! Loved the video..., you should make more!
If you don't have buttermilk, no problem! Take 1-cup of your regular milk add 2-tablespoons of white vinegar or lemon juice stir, let it set for 5-minutes and wala, you have buttermilk!
I just saw your channel tonight and I’ve watched a bunch of your videos already. I love your channel!! I wanted to tell you two things: 1) my aunt Veda used to make this and served it with chocolate gravy. Everyone in my family calls it “Aunt Veda Bread”...special fun dish! And 2) if you freeze the butter and grate it into the flour, you don’t have to do the pastry cutter step. Just a thought. Sass On lively southern lady!!
Thank you. So you know , I will be making this delicious bread with a drizzle of pike county honey suckle honey. Purchased in Ferdinand Indiana. Private bee keeper!!!
This reminds me of what we used to call batterbread in my house. Not sure if it's the same....but looks VERY simular! 😎 RECIPE IS AS FOLLOWS... Take iron skillet, spread bacon grease or shortening all over. In large bowl, 2 cups self rising flour, 1/4 cp chopped, chilled butter. 1/4 cp shortening. Cut all ingredients into flour with dough cutter until resembles crumbles. Add 3/4 cp buttermilk or while milk. If still dry, add more liquid slowly. (See video for consistency 2:30 ) Scrap mixture into skillet, and spread evenly. Bake 425° in preheated oven for 15-20 mins. Times may vary depending on your oven. Once done...remove from oven, spread melted butter all over, and place under broiler til lightly browned. ENJOY!!! 🙂
Your tool is called a pastry blender or pastry cutter. If you don’t have one the method that I was raised with is to use 2 table knives, one in each hand, and “cut” through the butter/shortening passing each other in the bowl.
I made it today and had to add quite a bit more buttermilk to get it wet enough. Just like my mom used to make. Just needed some chocolate gravy to go with it. Maybe tomorrow
We called it flour bread and we never added butter milk only sweet milk. It funny how bread is called so many different names. Glad to see this people don't fry bread much anymore.
If you have no buttermilk, make your own with 1 cup milk & 1 TBS white vinegar, do this first while you prepare the other things, as it needs to sit at least 5 min, you'll see it looks curdled, I do this all the time, no use buying a whole bunch Buttermilk and not use it. Thank you for sharing!
YOUR TOOL IS CALLED PIE DOUGH CUTTER.... &YOU 'ARE' CUTTING THE DOUGH; EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS MADE TO DO! This would be a good bread w honey & nothing like baking in cast iron pan.
My grandfather used to call this hoe cake. He wanted hot bread every day so my grandmother would alternate between this and east rolls or another kind of fried bread for which I have not yet found the recipe.
I was thinking of my granny this morning and thought about her biscuits bread. Thanks for sharing looks delicious. I'm going to give it a try ❤❤❤
I absolutely love your channel! I love how your down to earth and I'm from NC so I understand southern cooking method. You rock! ❤

exactly, we called it pone bread. Flour, salt, buttermilk and water. Good, quick bread for soaking up gravy! It is always used in place of biscuits.

That bread looks yummy.
