Ephesians 2:8-9 I do not frustrate the grace of God, for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. Galatians 2:21 Your trust in Jesus and His shed blood on the cross to pay for your sins, is what saves you from hell. The moment you trust in Jesus and only Jesus, you are saved. Then, you should be baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

I like how the second reading helps to understand the Gospel. Paul pleads Philemon for Onezimos, a former slave of Philemon, to be free for aiding Paul and the Gospel. And he writes, that this way he will receive him back not a a slave, but as a beloved son. If someone puts human relationships above love to Jesus, there is something that makes us slaves in those relationship (we try to please others so expectations of others enslave us, or we force on others our will. When Jesus is above all, also the relationships are in true freedom and love.

Very clear, enlightening sermon, Bishop. I'm a clinical psych with 40 years' experience. In the last decade, I shed off my professional garb and became a Life Mentor using contemplative meditation & philosophical counseling, in facilitating the healing of so many broken people. Life Mentoring is putting Jesus and Mary in the Center of sessions, Of Late, however, I seem to have become lukewarm in my own "connection" to God --seeing so much sinfulness around, including those that I have mentored. Also, I've been using my early morning meditation (this is supposed to be for my own spiritual sustenance) to pray for Ukraine, esp the refugees and the orphans. Seeing how Putin tenaciously clings to massive killings have increasingly made me impatient and lessen my faith. Thank you, Bishop, for restoring my faith and connection to God.
Our broken and sinful world is what made me see why we need a savior. On our own, we could never be good enough for God. Christ died for all sinners, including the worst of us. Imagine volunteering to die in place of Putin, knowing that he has done far worse than you. That is what Christ did for us . He paid the price for our sins, paid a debt he did not owe. I made this mistake in my life - the family became the central love of my life and I became so miserable. I almost lost my sobriety, my sanity...and it was not until my love for my family became right ordered, my love for the world became right ordered, that I started to feel like my best self. The words of Jesus in this Gospel passage are challenging indeed, yet I think Bishop Barron drives home the point with the idea of St. Augustine that we love God and then love all for the sake of God.
Thank you Bishop Barron for that powerful, thought provoking and challenging homily! The cost of discipleship is nothing to take lightly. Until we are challenged by life’s circumstances, those that demand all or nothing, we are more of a spectator wondering what our response would be if Jesus asked us to leave everything behind and follow him.
I wanted to share with you an epiphany I had that helped me decide to come back to the Catholic Church. I'd left in part out of a poor understanding of certain matters of Faith from my youth, but mainly because of the shortcomings, errors, and sins of the Church and the worst examples of its clergy. So wroth was I over these abuses and the way in which they were handled that I ended up almost abandoning God entirely. Finally as a milestone in a multi-year journey of spiritual reflection and reconnection to Fatih I realized something. I was reading through the New Testament for the first time since the Catechism of my child hood and Matthew 6:14-15 hit me and stuck with me. I prayed on it and times in my life when I had failed to forgive and the consequences of those failings. Thats when it hit me. What if I forgave the Church? As I read and researched more and my own conclusions about the faith fell more and more in line with Catholic doctrine, it got to the point where the only thing holding me back was the resentment I held over the Church's failings. So I forgave the Church, and since doing so have felt increasingly more at peace.

Hearing this I would suggest that nobody can do that what Christ demands. At least not by our own strength. It is impossible for us. We need to be transformed by grace to act this way And a second thought: This is also true in regard to Mary. If you love her more or even equal to Christ you make her an idol.

I was at mass today and the priest talked about climate change and how we must protect mother earth. Also there was a person on their phone all the way through. Also there was a non Catholic in there who was there just to sit there and hang out. All a great challenge but the church should stand up for itself and remove these people.
As a father I can imagine saying this to my son even as an agnostic heathen, it basically means 'I am not the truth, follow that which is good, which may be away from your father and to a wiser gooder calling.'

Excellent! Yet another anonited teaching. To achieve this command of Jesus we must be Born Again. As Jesus told Nicodemus: "Unless you are Born Again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God." St. Peter puts it this way in 1st Pet: "Being Born Again, not of corruptible seed, but incorruptible by the word of God, which lives and abides for ever." Through our faith in Jesus we become the sons and daughters of God. In Christ we are given a new uncorrupted spiritual DNA to help us first love God with all of our hearts and then love all men as ourselves. We have this new spiritual DNA that demands that we die to the old fallen DNA. The old carnal man must die and the new spiritually reborn man become as St. Peter says in 1st Pet" "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light." The new man is created in Christ and becomes part of the new creation with Jesus as the first born and elder brother. Glory and praises to Jesus and the father for cleansing us our sins and making us part of the priesthood of the new creation.
I recall this satement in Catholicism from Bishop Barron, "the worst thing we can do is domesticate Jesus. He is who He said He was or He was a very bad man". That has changed me forever because I believe He is who He said He was and for that, I owe it all to Him and I love Him and depend upon Him. Thank you Bishop for leading me to truth.

I disagree because if a lunatic tells me "be kind to your neighbor " or "look at the clouds it looks like a storms coming" there is no need to dismiss him the first I take as a good thing by my own hearts reckoning the second I can easily confirm for myself. Why then should I cast the thing Jesus said I hold to be true and good aside even if I thought him a person that sometimes lies or suffers from delusions. Things that are true are true no matter the source.
As a non denom protestant my whole life, I always loved this passage in that it seemed plain to me a call to repentance in the hatred of the sinful death deserving lives we all live, and not only recognising this sinful self easy to hate in others but specifically even in yourself. It's like saying unless you deeply and utterly detest the sinful self that you are and the sinful selves that all others are, you cannot follow Christ. For God makes righteous those who do not idolize and serve others as masters and those who do not live for themselves, but yearn to be with God. To be with God like Paul says "to die is gain, but to live is Christ. And this seems right in line with how Jesus also says to hate another is to wish their death. And yet it is God who says it is sin that deserves death and produces death. And so to hate the sinful self and the sinful other is to feel a sense of the divine wrath looking over us and to be on the side of that divine wrath within oneself and in this deep desire for the destruction of all sin, a complete surrender and falling to the ground in absolute repentance of desiring there to be no sin, one can find the true infinite mercy of Jesus waiting for them and can radically begin to truly follow Christ to the cross. But now as a new Catholic of last year, I just wonder whether I went wrong somewhere in my reading of this passage...?
This scripture as I studied means if you love Jesus you follow him and pick his cross by trying to live a righteous life and living sin free, spreading the good news. If your. Mother, sister etc etc are not doing this than you must hate them because they are not following Jesus. Jesus = righteousness.

I understand but I can also see a narcissistic Guru saying you must love him more than anything. So it boils down more to is he worthy or not of such a thing, not the words alone.
I have always found this gospel shocking, I admit. His Ecellency did his very best in letting us know that God is the Alpha, the Omega, the beginning and the end. Hating oneself is not so much an issue, but hating =one's parents, family, brothers and sisters? Mine are mostly gone and deat, and yest I still love my parents.

Why would Jesus need us to hate anyone? I thought we were supposed to love the person and hate the sin. Also if Jesus came to end our suffering why would he want us to take up our cross and seek out suffering over loving our own lives?
Thank you Bishop Barron that you did not downplay the use of the word hate in your sharing about Luke 14:26. So often the use of the word hate here is challenged, some even claiming that it is an error of the Bible translators. This is not the case. In an attempt to try to over defend its use the power of the message that is intended would be compromised. Yet for those who might feel the need to support the use of the word hate in Jesus' message more thoroughly please know that in the original language there was no grammatical comparative form-as would be otherwise, "If any man come to me and does not consider his father and mother and wife and children and brethren and sisters yea and his own life less than me, he cannot be my disciple. It is said that in Greek, the language of the early New Testament, that the use of the word hate in Luke 14:26 is not meant literally but as a kind of godly hyperbole as in Matthew 5:29,30 and the plucking out of the eye or the cutting of the hand and casting them away. Bishop Barron did not over specify this because over explanation can somewhat water down the spirit and power of the message. As Bishop Barron teaches the Lord provides good common sense and thereby we know from Jesus that we are not to hate in the wrong way....yet he has been faithful to deliver this message with the full Gospel punch that Jesus delivered it in. Oh how refreshing that is-to be heard from a modern day Bishop., who knows what we need to truly hear.
It's a pretty scary affirmation, like Indian Jones the last crusade, he puts his hand on his heart and leaps to his death and discovered a bridge unseen before.
Bishop, don’t you think that if Christ is the one we must revolve around, we should be able to know him as he is? But all we receive are interpretations of scant texts - not a living, breathing, talking person like yourself. I could sit with you and pick your brain over coffee and get to know you, but Jesus I pray to and receive only silence. How do we make our lives revolve around an entity who is more like a concept than a living person like yourself?

Something I don't understand his how this links to Jovie (jobe). The greatest love is not a child to a parent but the inverse. A good parent to their child (as it should be). What if I love my own children more than I loved my parents (who were great parents BTW)...? What does God EXpect of me then?
The way I read that passage nowadays is that its a typical move of radical influencers and frankly, cult leaders. It screams of "Dont listen to your friends or family, don't trust any outsiders, don't listen to anyone but me. Don't trust them when they say you're starting to act weird, don't believe them if they tell you bad things I've done." It is a tactic of cults to separate you from your loved ones or anyone who's opinion you might trust enough to entertain their questioning or doubt in the leader. Also anyone who could offer you help.should you want to leave. Cult leaders want you completely dependent on them with no one else to turn to. Don't mistake this as me saying all christians are cultists, that's not my position. But having come from a christian background and left it, my perspective allows me to see some elements of the belief system and the scripture that are disturbingly similar. The truth has no fear of questions. Remember to tell someone you love them today🙂
I think your interpretation is misguided. Jesus was not a cult leader - he was in fact telling us not to follow anyone else in this world but our Father in heaven. This passage is akin to "be in the world but not of the world". Loving/following anyone else in this world can lead us off our true calling in life. This calling was given to us by God from birth. God is the one who gave us life and who also created reality itself. He sees and knows all but he only speaks to us in private. This inner relationship can only be heard by listening to our conscience and having faith in him who is above all things. Just my opinion.

I like how the second reading helps to understand the Gospel. Paul pleads Philemon for Onezimos, a former slave of Philemon, to be free for aiding Paul and the Gospel. And he writes, that this way he will receive him back not a a slave, but as a beloved son. If someone puts human relationships above love to Jesus, there is something that makes us slaves in those relationship (we try to please others so expectations of others enslave us, or we force on others our will. When Jesus is above all, also the relationships are in true freedom and love.

professional garb and became a Life Mentor using contemplative meditation & philosophical counseling, in facilitating the healing of so many broken people. Life Mentoring is putting Jesus and Mary in the Center of sessions, Of Late, however, I seem to have become lukewarm in my own "connection" to God --seeing so much sinfulness around, including those that I have mentored. Also, I've been using my early morning meditation (this is supposed to be for my own spiritual sustenance) to pray for Ukraine, esp the refugees and the orphans. Seeing how Putin tenaciously clings to massive killings have increasingly made me impatient and lessen my faith. Thank you, Bishop, for restoring my faith and connection to God.

The words of Jesus in this Gospel passage are challenging indeed, yet I think Bishop Barron drives home the point with the idea of St. Augustine that we love God and then love all for the sake of God.
Thank you Bishop Barron for that powerful, thought provoking and challenging homily! The cost of discipleship is nothing to take lightly. Until we are challenged by life’s circumstances, those that demand all or nothing, we are more of a spectator wondering what our response would be if Jesus asked us to leave everything behind and follow him.
I wanted to share with you an epiphany I had that helped me decide to come back to the Catholic Church.
I'd left in part out of a poor understanding of certain matters of Faith from my youth, but mainly because of the shortcomings, errors, and sins of the Church and the worst examples of its clergy.
So wroth was I over these abuses and the way in which they were handled that I ended up almost abandoning God entirely.
Finally as a milestone in a multi-year journey of spiritual reflection and reconnection to Fatih I realized something. I was reading through the New Testament for the first time since the Catechism of my child hood and Matthew 6:14-15 hit me and stuck with me. I prayed on it and times in my life when I had failed to forgive and the consequences of those failings.
Thats when it hit me. What if I forgave the Church? As I read and researched more and my own conclusions about the faith fell more and more in line with Catholic doctrine, it got to the point where the only thing holding me back was the resentment I held over the Church's failings.
So I forgave the Church, and since doing so have felt increasingly more at peace.

Hearing this I would suggest that nobody can do that what Christ demands. At least not by our own strength. It is impossible for us. We need to be transformed by grace to act this way

Correct...I was so afraid of this myself, I took extra measures even when I started to pray the Rosary...to make sure I don't fall into this category.

I was at mass today and the priest talked about climate change and how we must protect mother earth. Also there was a person on their phone all the way through. Also there was a non Catholic in there who was there just to sit there and hang out. All a great challenge but the church should stand up for itself and remove these people.

Through our faith in Jesus we become the sons and daughters of God.
In Christ we are given a new uncorrupted spiritual DNA to help us first love God with all of our hearts and then love all men as ourselves. We have this new spiritual DNA that demands that we die to the old fallen DNA. The old carnal man must die and the new spiritually reborn man become as St. Peter says in 1st Pet" "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light." The new man is created in Christ and becomes part of the new creation with Jesus as the first born and elder brother. Glory and praises to Jesus and the father for cleansing us our sins and making us part of the priesthood of the new creation.

Lewis insists we must choose between these three options and dismiss Jesus totally unless the answer is Lord(his choice).
I disagree because if a lunatic tells me "be kind to your neighbor " or "look at the clouds it looks like a storms coming" there is no need to dismiss him the first I take as a good thing by my own hearts reckoning the second I can easily confirm for myself.
Why then should I cast the thing Jesus said I hold to be true and good aside even if I thought him a person that sometimes lies or suffers from delusions.

As a non denom protestant my whole life, I always loved this passage in that it seemed plain to me a call to repentance in the hatred of the sinful death deserving lives we all live, and not only recognising this sinful self easy to hate in others but specifically even in yourself. It's like saying unless you deeply and utterly detest the sinful self that you are and the sinful selves that all others are, you cannot follow Christ. For God makes righteous those who do not idolize and serve others as masters and those who do not live for themselves, but yearn to be with God. To be with God like Paul says "to die is gain, but to live is Christ. And this seems right in line with how Jesus also says to hate another is to wish their death. And yet it is God who says it is sin that deserves death and produces death. And so to hate the sinful self and the sinful other is to feel a sense of the divine wrath looking over us and to be on the side of that divine wrath within oneself and in this deep desire for the destruction of all sin, a complete surrender and falling to the ground in absolute repentance of desiring there to be no sin, one can find the true infinite mercy of Jesus waiting for them and can radically begin to truly follow Christ to the cross.
But now as a new Catholic of last year, I just wonder whether I went wrong somewhere in my reading of this passage...?

This scripture as I studied means if you love Jesus you follow him and pick his cross by trying to live a righteous life and living sin free, spreading the good news. If your. Mother, sister etc etc are not doing this than you must hate them because they are not following Jesus. Jesus = righteousness.

I understand but I can also see a narcissistic Guru saying you must love him more than anything. So it boils down more to is he worthy or not of such a thing, not the words alone.
I have always found this gospel shocking, I admit.
His Ecellency did his very best in letting us know that God is the Alpha, the Omega, the beginning and the end. Hating oneself is not so much an issue, but hating =one's parents, family, brothers and sisters? Mine are mostly gone and deat, and yest I still love my parents.

Why would Jesus need us to hate anyone? I thought we were supposed to love the person and hate the sin. Also if Jesus came to end our suffering why would he want us to take up our cross and seek out suffering over loving our own lives?
Thank you Bishop Barron that you did not downplay the use of the word hate in your sharing about Luke 14:26. So often the use of the word hate here is challenged, some even claiming that it is an error of the Bible translators. This is not the case. In an attempt to try to over defend its use the power of the message that is intended would be compromised.
Yet for those who might feel the need to support the use of the word hate in Jesus' message more thoroughly please know that in the original language there was no grammatical comparative form-as would be otherwise, "If any man come to me and does not consider his father and mother and wife and children and brethren and sisters yea and his own life less than me, he cannot be my disciple. It is said that in Greek, the language of the early New Testament, that the use of the word hate in Luke 14:26 is not meant literally but as a kind of godly hyperbole as in Matthew 5:29,30 and the plucking out of the eye or the cutting of the hand and casting them away.
Bishop Barron did not over specify this because over explanation can somewhat water down the spirit and power of the message. As Bishop Barron teaches the Lord provides good common sense and thereby we know from Jesus that we are not to hate in the wrong way....yet he has been faithful to deliver this message with the full Gospel punch that Jesus delivered it in. Oh how refreshing that is-to be heard from a modern day Bishop., who knows what we need to truly hear.
It's a pretty scary affirmation, like Indian Jones the last crusade, he puts his hand on his heart and leaps to his death and discovered a bridge unseen before.
I hope many don't take this literally!
Bishop, don’t you think that if Christ is the one we must revolve around, we should be able to know him as he is? But all we receive are interpretations of scant texts - not a living, breathing, talking person like yourself. I could sit with you and pick your brain over coffee and get to know you, but Jesus I pray to and receive only silence. How do we make our lives revolve around an entity who is more like a concept than a living person like yourself?

The way I read that passage nowadays is that its a typical move of radical influencers and frankly, cult leaders.
It screams of "Dont listen to your friends or family, don't trust any outsiders, don't listen to anyone but me. Don't trust them when they say you're starting to act weird, don't believe them if they tell you bad things I've done."
It is a tactic of cults to separate you from your loved ones or anyone who's opinion you might trust enough to entertain their questioning or doubt in the leader. Also anyone who could offer you help.should you want to leave. Cult leaders want you completely dependent on them with no one else to turn to.
Don't mistake this as me saying all christians are cultists, that's not my position. But having come from a christian background and left it, my perspective allows me to see some elements of the belief system and the scripture that are disturbingly similar.

I think your interpretation is misguided. Jesus was not a cult leader - he was in fact telling us not to follow anyone else in this world but our Father in heaven. This passage is akin to "be in the world but not of the world". Loving/following anyone else in this world can lead us off our true calling in life. This calling was given to us by God from birth. God is the one who gave us life and who also created reality itself. He sees and knows all but he only speaks to us in private. This inner relationship can only be heard by listening to our conscience and having faith in him who is above all things. Just my opinion.

No one who claims to love you would attempt to cut you off from others who also love you, or jealously denigrate their importance.
