  • Friends, we come now to the great and holy season of Lent, a time to get back to spiritual basics. This First Sunday of Lent, we hear Luke’s account of the temptation of Jesus. What Jesus faces in the desert are three classical substitutes for God-three levels of temptation, three types of diversion from the ultimate good. Can we look honestly and directly at those things that will cause us to deviate from the path the Lord has for us?

My temptation to sin is always based on serving self. What Bishop Barron calls the ego drama. Pope Francis said: So often in life we waste time asking ourselves “who am I”? You can keep asking “who am I” for the rest of your life. But the real question is “ for whom am I”? Of course you are for God. But he has decided that you should be for others, and has give you many qualities, inclination, gifts and charisms that are not for you but to be shared with those around you. The Pope’s words, and listening to this great Bishop as often as possible, helps to orient my life away from temptations of the self.

Thank you Bishop Barron for this timely video as we begin our lenten journey!
For me, this hits on all 3 levels but often leaving the desert floor evades me. Because of my selfishness you will usually find me there. Power as in terms of control is grossly deceiving and easy to recognize in others (can lead to the poison that is gossip) but in oneself is masked as taking care of my interests before anyone else's for the sake of my own perceived needs. Glory and honor I appreciate and seem to be identified in me through acceptance by others. Misinterpreting those compliments or recognition makes me try harder to stay there like I need them to stay alive or that being relative to others is key to perceived happiness. Social media is often food for this level. Egotistical for sure, and all 3 levels are certainly selfish. I constantly struggle with temptation like everyone else but in this struggle I lean on God's love for us...He never fails, ever. The one undeniable constant.

Thank you for this beautiful explanation of true humility, John. I relate very much to the temptation of serving self as well. Pray that I will ask myself this question “For whom am I” and then use all of God’s available graces for His purposes. God bless you, dear brother in Christ.

*Bishop Barron:* Set aside a preoccupation with sensual pleasure. That is why we fast during Lent. *Set aside an infatuation with worldly power. That becomes a plaything of the devil.* Set aside this bloated self-importance of the ego. Thats just leads to trouble. *And keep yourself focused on God, ... Make yourself available to his grace.*

I'm pretty sure these temptations (craving sensual pleasure, power, and fame all distracting from openness to God) are a lot more challenging for most people than temptations to incest or considering marriage superior to "holy virginity" if that's what you were trying to say. summarizing a lesson is not the same as empty parroting. again, if I've understood you to be contesting the message, please explain why, plainly, if possible.

My greatest temptation is food. I give into it more often, although I want to fast during lent, I am craving for food on that particular day and finally I give in. I am sorry Lord, I don't know how Jesus went without food and drink for 40 days. Probably because He was Human and Divine at the same time.

For most of my life, I was VERY tempted by some of these things. I was driven by money and recognitions. I thought having both would make me truly happy. The older and wiser I become, especially within the past few years, I see more and more that these things do not equate to happiness. In fact, sometimes the truly happiest people don't have very much. I've come to realize that other things can truly make one happy, such as family, love, giving, peace, and spirituality. As I get older, I have desired to get closer and closer to God, and finally I have heard the message and decided to work my way back into my R.C. religion on more than just a personal level. I look forward to what the future will bring.
Thank you for these very nice videos and messages Robert!

This year, Lenten observances finally look fairly normal at our Parish. There is NO alcohol during the fish fry, and no desserts.
I’m so happy! When I told the Sacristan I was happy about it, she looked at me like I was crazy, but what is the point in a fast it you don’t take the good stuff away, and suffer in small ways?

I would like, respectfully, to comment on your mentioning President Nixon along with Putin. I wonder if you could elaborate on Nixon being included. I lived through Watergate, and certainly, Nixon was far from perfect--who is, but he signed a nuclear disarmament treaty with Russia and traveled to China, the first president to accomplish those things. He may have averted a nuclear war, and he also ended the Viet Nam conflict. Take care, and God bless you as you continue your ministry.

The last temptation is also a form of obsession with the self. The greatest temptation anno 2024 for many! "Show the world your 'authrentic' self" as the highest good. Or just be busy finding your 'true' self and not perse showing it to the world. Like sustenance it is important to know yourself but these days the self tents to lush out God and that is not a good thing.

The way this sermon is set up is so deep. It starts off with the gospel of Luke that by shedding light onto evil you dispel it. Bishop Barron then perfectly sums all of the temptations that cripple your soul and sheds light onto the darkest parts of the ego. The way my mind kept on connecting with everything that stops me from following god wholeheartedly and then, immediately hear Bishop Barron say it out loud made this feel like a deep spiritual exercise. This is the type of meditation people should sit through and listen to. If everyone started off their weekend listening to the word of god, of course they are going to make better decisions about their life by not giving into temptations.

I've swung back and forth between all three levels for years until by God's grace realised I hadn't put him first even before my family. I surrender every day, im so weak and imperfect, I need to repeatedly surrender moment by moment, to keep focussed on God and His will for me and His will for the world. For me constantly focussing on him is the only way, trusting only Him. I fall into temptation and scrape myself, but I get back up again and keep trying, trusting. Thank you BB, your homily is so clear, true and good. God bless 🙏

Yeah this is hard! I think we literally can't, but God can. If you're starving, and the only food is rocks, you'll try and eat the rocks. We are body and soul, and our brains are made of dust. We can't be holy without literally the Holy Spirit coming and doing life giving miracles in our hearts to sustain us. I think that's the other point of the "throwing yourself off the parapet" temptation. you have to trust God to give you the strength to deny yourself in the ways He is calling you to, and also have the humility to not try and deny yourself in ways God is not calling you to. Obviously God is calling you not to sin, but for the gray areas, it's easy to be like "ugh I have no self control to not do x y z sin, let's do a bread and water fast for lent to get control of my self control," and then it just turns into more of the self hatred and poison that fed the sin in the first place. Like the Father called Jesus to the cross and brought Him back, that's self denial kind of like it would be self denial to deny your physical body its desire to not be plummetimg off a parapet, but the difference was in the crucifixion the Father was in control, Jesus was not. I think God gives grace to sustain you when you have hardship, but if you deny yourself joy that God is trying to love you with, God sometimes lets us splat, because with our self denial we're making God into this severe, distant, disapproving idol when He is really a loving, patient, generous, nurturing Father. Hold fast to God is exactly right, He will teach us how to overcome everything. We have to trust Him to be in control of how that happens, not us, and just hope and trust, and then God will do the resurrecting and miracles and lift us up, and teach us the incredibly joyful truth about His tenderness and patience and goodness at the same time.

He really does inspire me to come back to the Church. But I just don't know if I can, now. It's just too late for me. I'm old, alone, and would benefit no one.

The very fact that you were a member of the Church again would benefit the entire Church, just as an amputated finger being reattached to the hand benefits the entire body. It is not too late, you can do it, you need the Church, and the Church needs you. Call your local parish priest today!

It seems to me that indulging in any of the three temptation levels presented by bishop Barron, we gradually become « a plaything of the devil ». As we ascend from one stage to another, the hallucinatory power of the drug is proportional to the spiritual cost. As we believe we are getting it all, we are loosing it all.

    Excellent Homily Bishop Barron!
    Thank you so much!
“Making ourselves available for His Grace” this is exactly right!
I have been practicing Christian meditation through Fr. John Main’s practice of listening to the word “Maranatha” in complete silence allowing God’s Grace to speak to me but more importantly to “just BE” with Him in the silence of my mind, body & soul. This dwelling in God’s Grace and taking the attention off myself to complete focus on Him has taught me to be more attentive to the other in my life.
Bishop Barron, you messages each week are anointed by the Holy Spirit so beautifully.
