Special shout out to my husband Lane who wanted to have a go at editing this week AND created me some great new graphics in this video. Did you notice?!
Great video with really good tips and explanations. I recently discovered that Gűtterman make a top quality stretch thread called Maraflex, that you use in both the top and bobbin of a regular sewing machine. This means that you can use it to sew stretch fabrics with a regular sewing machine using a straight stitch. I’ve tried it and it’s a game changer.
I had the purple clips from spotlight (sew easy brand, maybe?) and they don’t grip much at all (they slide down the needle plate as I’m sewing). I bought the birch brand ones and they grip really well. So it might be worth trying different brands (If you haven’t already)
@@MyMumMakes yes, thanks to your helpful tips, today I successfully made a girls dress using cotton spandex. My first go at knit fabric and my first go at making clothing!! I have to say I am so proud of it, it’s turned out great! Thank you again for making the video
Especially important with knits and prewashing is to dry as you intend. A clothes dryer will further shrink your stretch. I always throw mine in a dryer as I often gift makes and a lot of households now use a dryer. It would be a shame for it to be ruined post-gifting. Spotlight is incredibly bad at labelling fabric so other than stretch and knit you may like to be aware of terms such as jersey, spandex, lycra, and interlock.
You've never seen the incredible shrinking act of stretch fabric? It's rather disheartening to see your meter of fabric decrease to 70cm. Especially when it is so pricey here.
Ohhhh I hate when that happens. For me it's usually when I'm starting to sew a new edge and the corner gets trapped in the feed dogs. Is that what you find? If that's happening I will usually start sewing a few cm (an inch) past the corner and sew backwards towards the corner and then sew forwards to start sewing properly. The row of stitches eems to reinforce that corner so it's not so flimsy when then sewing it normally and it doesn't then get stuck. Is that helpful? Is that when you're experiencing it getting stuck?
Try sewing a scrap of your fabric first, then feed in your project. Google ‘thread bunny’ or ‘sewing starter/leader and ender’ for a visual. It definitely helps prevent your project being fed into the needle plate.
@@MyMumMakes thanks for the tip, I’ll try anything! It happens after I sew a few inches. I’ve been a bit intimidated by knits for awhile now so I’ve put off learning😅

Glad to help. You still did at least 60% of the editing though. Lots of work involved
Very thorough tutorial such a great job thank you
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for commenting

I love clips over pins when possible. I use a type of hair clip that's longer then the wonder clips and I feel like it has a good hold
Sounds perfect, because you're right, the wonder clips are quite short.

Wonderful! Thanks for subscribing
Thanks Marie for these great tips. I am wanting to have a go at stretch fabrics soon so these pointers are going to be very useful!
Excellent I'm so glad they seem useful. Do you have a project in mind that you're hoping to try?

@@cbarby801 wow congrats that's a great achievement! Clothes can be tricky but so satisfying to see them be worn. Great work

Good idea. We don't own a dryer though we just use the sun for everything

For sure! I've had it happen when I was new to sewing and didn't know to prewash so now it's certainly prewash all the way, no matter what fabric type
Any tips for stretch fabric getting stuck in the feed dogs on the machine?
