As soon as you said 'jamun', it reminded me of my fav dessert: 'gulab janum'. The word 'janum' in that dessert refers to this fruit because it is similar in color and shape (though the size of the dessert dough balls is much bigger). This fruit is very popular in Konkan (west coast of India) -- also famous for its Alphonso mango. There are two types of flesh -- white and dark purple. The dark purple variety is sweeter. You can roll the fruit between your fingers and a hard surface to let the juices separate (inside the fruit).
It's one of my favourite monsoon fruits as its native to India. The softer and plump it gets, the less tart or puckery it becomes. Allow it to swell. I also chill the fruit that condenses the sugar and makes the fruit even more tastier.
Great information and video.. Want to know if this will survive in New Jersey winters ? if so, how big should i let this grow in the pot and then transfer to the yard ?
I was so happy to discover that this tree can be grown in the desert but then was disappointed that it would take 5 yrs to fruit. I don't think we will stay any longer than 5 yrs in AZ. That tree is called "duhat" in the Philippines and I loved it as a kid. I've never had it for decades and I would love to have some of it if I could! Thank you for making this video. My husband and I will be in your shop sometime soon bc I have a list of trees I want to plant this fall. I'm so excited already!
I bought my java plum tree and planted it in my yard about 2-3 years ago. But it is a bit bigger than the tree you are showing at 4:04. Is that normal? It also has a bunch of brown spots on it, looks like rust?
Java likely comes from the name of the Island in Indonesia. There are a few different species that are called Java plum, or jamun and grow in different areas! Some are native to the Philippines
I'm wondering if it will grow in central Oklahoma. My wife is from Pakistan and when I visit here. We eat these sprinkled with salt. I wanted to grow it where I live.. so was researching and found this video.
omg tysm for this video!! SO helpful, you covered everything!! really appreciate showing container vs in ground. i just bought one from etsy but ive saved your link and will buy trees from you in the future. i have to keep my jamun (grown from cuttings, 2 yrs old) in a contain for a year...or i give it to my family and they can put it in the ground. the grower told me it could live forever in a 7 gallon bucket but as i do more research i dont think so!

I’ve had my jamun tree for the past 8-9 years and just last year it began to grow fruit. But it only produced a few fruit and the tree itself is like 40-50 feet high. Any recommendations for it grow more fruit next year? Gets full sun, water from drip system 2-3 times a week, and gets very lightly fertilized

They can fruit in a big pot (depends on location I guess I'm in the tropics), get a grafted one. Mine is only about 7 feet in a 20 inch diameter pot and it gives fruit (but not a lot)
Thank you for the great video! The continent of jamun (jambudivpa) is the region where humans live and the only place where a being may become enlightened. Jamun is sacred for Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. Who eats jamun their organs don't get tired, they live forever young. There are hundreds of scientific research pointing the jamun tree is a complete drug store.
In India it is called Jamun, in Hindi. I don't know what is origin of the word. In different parts of India it has different names. Good info. I live in San Diego and have a huge Jamun tree. It fruits a lot and most of them fall on the ground. I have tons of little Jamun plants and don't know what to do with them !!

Hi! I am in San Diego too and considering buying a Jamun tree. I heard it gets messy a lot, has to be 10-15 feet away from the home. What are your thoughts and experiences? Thank you 😊
I am in process of trying to plant mines in Alabama (brought them from back home and planted the seeds last week) but if I am unsuccessful, I would love to get the plant. Huge Jamun fan here

vid on mulberry coming out soon. I do have lots of 1 gallons rooting which will be rdy for shipping soon. As far as cuttings, they don't stay viable for too long but if interested I'll post them for sale on my website under the "cuttngs section". Probably do a preorder or something.

plants are just like you and I, they are all different. As long as it's growing, it's normal. Brown spots after winter is usually due to frost damage.

What about growing this in Seattle?
without protection it will get destroyed
can this tree handle direct sun in northern california? I'm talking 110 degrees. and would it be ok in clay soil, or should I amend it?

Can you coppace this tree, meaning to cut the main trunk to encourage lower branching growth, and it still makes fruit?
yes you can top it off no issues.
Can i grow this tree in East Texas. It is really humid, and we do get snow for two days in a year.
too cold
Yes, it fits in Texas! And it fits in most places in the world! It's a fantastic fruit tree. Here in Brazil we have many!
Can you grow this in pots?
I explain this in the video.
Thank you for replying. And yes I watched your video again. Now I’m sad that I can’t grow this on pots. Again, thank you
