    As a 8 handicap and someone who is trying to be a PGA teaching pro, it’s not so much the money but it’s the time. I’m fortunate enough to work at a course so I practice for about two hours every few days. What really got me to the single digit level was dedicating a full month of 2 hours of practice each day. Practicing getting up and down, making sure I’m starting putts on line, practicing my alignment on the range. Getting a feel of distances with wedges so when you have 85 yards into a hole, you can remember that feeling when you were practicing. Also I’d recommend Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons book because those are the basics any golfer should know.

      I agree with this so much. It’s need to get really dialed for those 90-110 yard shots. I lose a lot of strokes there

    I returned to golf after years of playing socially .
    Took 2 years to get from 16 to 7.6. Playing around 2 comp rounds a week and at least 1 range session
    I’ve spent the last few months looking for gains in new clubs with has caused me to be back around 8.5.
    At different handicap ranges I feel like you need to hone different areas. For me to from 11> 7 I started to go to the gym and just get stronger

      I agree. Right now my biggest problem area is the tee box, and the wedges from around 100 yards

    This is really relevant to my interests... I'm in. Personally, I don't want to lower my handicap, I just want to become more consistent which will logically bring the handicap down. A few years ago, as a father of five and working shift work, I was only getting out 1 or 2 times a year. I then resolved to get in 10 rounds one summer. I did and was shooting triple digits. I judged my game by how many balls I played with. Now, after getting in 30 rounds this summer (kids are grown and on cruise control), got a solid PXG fitting I'm low 90's, teetering on high 80's. If I can get to a place of shooting mid to high 80's consistently, I'll be in a happy place as that is competitive with everyone I play with. I look forward to watching your progress.
    But don't stop with the amusing content. It's what brought me here at first a year ago.

    This is an excellent idea. Documenting the progression, time and cost gives every high handicapper a look at what it actually takes. I am on a similar journey. I'm 67 years old and re-started playing 3 months ago after 25 years. At my best, 25 years ago, I had a 16 handicap. I learned that you can't pick up where you left off. If I had to guess now, I'm about a 20 handicap. I've broke 100 twice since playing again. My goal is to get good enough to play on par with my son and him not be embarassed to play with me hence, single digit handicap. I may start recording time and expenses like you to compare. Thank you for doing what you do.

    • @birdogey
      @birdogey  Місяць тому +1

      Thank you for sharing your story! I know ow you’re gonna break 100 at least 15 times this season. Dont ever be embarrassed on the course. The game is meant to be ENJOYED. We don’t have to be scratch golfers to do that! But I agree that being a single digit is something we can strive for as more of a personal achievement more than anything else!

    I agree my self talk has changed quite a bit and dropped from a 16.2 in March to an 11.9 in early October. I need a few low 80 mid 70 confidence rounds to get it under 10. I’m hoping early next year just gotta kill a couple mistakes.

  • @StomperGolf

    Good luck man you can do it and we will be watching

  • @pwdrhnd23
    @pwdrhnd23 Місяць тому +1

    This is gonna be great!
    The self talk is REAL! I really started focusing on being positive while on the course at all times and using the Way of the Playa this last season (Wisconsin, so from late April to Octoberish). I play in league every other week, 9 holes starting at a 14 (for 9 holes mind you).
    No lessons, range time maybe once a month, and usually 1 practice 9 a weekend; I was a 12 the last week of league play. Had some great rounds and tied my low 9 hole score of 43 with 4 strokes left on the course at least!
    I think this is going to be a 6 month run and less than $15k if you spend realistically and frugally. I know that you need to make content but most of us wouldn't play big name courses. It is going to be very intriguing no matter how much you splurge on those courses and I am really looking forward to watch this progress!

    • @birdogey
      @birdogey  Місяць тому

      So happy to hear your progress! And yes you’re right. I do have to make content so I’ll play some nice courses. And I figure that the average golfer who is working on their handicap will still occasionally go on a golf trip with the buddies, or get invited to a country club from his friend who is a member, etc. that’s the main reason why I’m including them. But most of the rounds and the practice will be at my local course where it’s not that expensive. (Well at least compared to courses here. I know you can probably get a full 18 holes with cart for $20 in somewhere like Nebraska or something, but this is south Florida haha)

    Interesting, I can tell you how much it cost me to go from a 10 handicap to scratch. I got a partial membership at a course where I paid $260 a month walking, cart was $40 a round (I always walked). Hit a large bucket of balls 5 days a week at $10 a bucket ($200, 20 hours per month). No lessons. Spent 5 hours a week just chipping and putting (free, 20 hours a month). Walked 18 holes approximately 6 times a week (4 hours per round, 100 hours per month). Went from a 10 handicap to scratch in 3 months for a cost of $1380 and 420 hours. You might want to add in 5-10 dollars a round for golf balls, but it never seemed like I spent that much on golf balls.

    I think you can exclude any discounted stuff you get. This isn't a good reflection on how much it would cost anyone, it's how much it's going to cost you. For instance, there's a local course here and the membership is $600 a year for unlimited anytime play... you're gonna spend that in a weekend at nice courses... you don't have to play nice courses to be a single digit. Hell, if your yard is big enough you can chip balls there and not pay range fees, elite 100y in game can get you to a single digit. You don't need to be fitted with custom clubs to be single digit, if you're good you're good... and you can get single digit with thrift store clubs. I'd just rephrase it to your personal journey. I'm like a 15-18 and have only played for 5 months, and I expect to be single digit next year and I've never had a lesson or anything. Just always playing with a buddy who's really good.

    i'm curious as well, and i might track how much i spend. i initially started at the beginning of this year with a goal of trying to get from a 26 handicap to scratch with minimal resources, but that ended up harder than it looks, and is not realistic. i found that my most significant improvements came when i spent the money on good coaching and club fitting
