Thank you for your honesty and letting people know to have your yard marked out before you dig. My husband did the same thing with the electrical cables. Glad that everyone is ok!!
Luke, I'm proud of you for finally being able to talk about this! Definitely something that I wouldn't have thought of, and I'm sure many people would agree. Because you have such a big following, think of the people you have helped just from this one story!
Luke this year I planted my garden intensively. The plants look amazing. Better germination. I’m in 5b Illinois. I can wait to see how the harvests are this year. So far so good. I fit so much more in. I don’t have raised beds . All earth garden. The radish were smaller but tons of them. So I’ll keep playing with this method but I’m really excited about it. Thanks for showing us how to ignore the seed package spacing!
5b In CO. This year has already been a challenge. A very late, heavy, destructive May snow storm followed by extreme heat. You gotta roll with the punches.
Wow! What an eye opener. Thanks soooo much for sharing that. Thank God you and your neighbors weren’t hurt. 🙌🏼 I would never have thought of that either. I will be super careful when putting in trees, fence posts or anything that I would have to dig deep. Greatly appreciated! We all definitely learn from our mistakes. 🥰👩🏻🌾
I'll remember this. I wasn't worried about my current garden as to where it's located, but in a couple years I'll be moving and I won't be as familiar with that property to know what's hidden where.
I'm glad everything turned out okay for you with that event. Here is something else we need to think about. I live in a house that was built back in 1898 in an outlying coal town. It got moved into the city when that coal area shut down. There were very large elm trees in the back yard when we bought it in 1987 - one of them about 10 feet from the back porch steps of my house. We had been living here about 10 years when we decided to replace the old broken sidewalk to the alley with a new one so we did that. Then about 8 years later that tree had to be taken out due to rot. The tree company came in, did their thing, including chipping out the stump, and left. The next year I decided I wanted to plant a small garden there - full sun and all that - so I started hand digging around the small portion of left over stump that was next to the sidewalk with a trowel and a small axe to get that area cleared. I'm digging and chopping for a few days when I finally got almost to the edge of the sidewalk and discover - THE GAS LINE! Holy Mary Mother of God! What the heck is that doing there? It's supposed to be 3 feet down below the freeze line! That sucker was only about 2 inches from the edge of the side walk, 4 inches below ground and right in the area where the tree chipper had been running! Thank goodness they didn't hit it. I called the gas company and they came out to take a look. None of them could figure out why that line wasn't where it was supposed to be until I gave them the house's history. Apparently there were no "regulations" for depth back in the day. I had to cover that all up, mark it, and they came back the next summer, moved the gas line so it was running in a straight line from the meter at the back edge of the house to the alley and way down where it belonged. At least I didn't have to dig out the rest of the stump as they did that in order to get the gas line moved. I did plant a garden there but on both sides of where the line runs and kept it to elderberry bushes on the back side and a herb garden along the sidewalk. So a word to the wise - if you are thinking about buying an OLD house find out where the dang gas lines are first.
OMG! My house was built the exact same year!! These testimonials have been an eye opener....no more digging for me unless i get a land consultation... thank you also for sharing!!!
Personal accounts like this are always the most effective in my opinion. Thank you so much for sharing, I am sure your post today will save someone from unnecessary suffering.
Never had that criss my mind! Thank you for letting us know! Can you please tell Mrs. Migardener that I said Thank You! I just received my seeds and her stamp was on my invoice and it brought tons of warmed in my heart. Tha k you for packing my seeds Mrs. Cindy🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 I hope you both have a beautiful weekend. And happy Father's day Luke😊
a tree branch fell this year since we had many storms. We didn't know it was weak but it fell on our gas meter and we heard the hiss too. They only sent one fire truck that turned off the gas and left. the gas company came, repaired, and left too. they didn't notify any neighbors or block the street. But again yes so glad everyone was OK in your situation and mine.
Wow! Those are some seriously good reasons to water in the am. Yep, in California they suggest we call first before digging too. Thanks so much for that information!
Thanks for the PSA. I never thought about it either. I just bought a new house in another state and will be moving there soon. its way out in the country but I will be calling just to make sure.
I just called 811 because I planned to install 2 4 foot posts for a wine trellis on Monday. They said they’d have everything marked Monday morning. So Monday afternoon, I see no marks where I planned to dig, so I start digging with my post hole digger. Half way into my dig here comes the gas guy and catches me literally in the act. I confess I “assumed” he had already been there. I stopped, he marked everything and luckily I was in the clear. Had I seen this video 2 days ago I think I would have waited. Excellent reminder this time of year!
typically youll see a different colored flag for each type of line, and its usually diff people marking each one. always wise to wait 24 hrs and look to see you have all the colors out there before digging.
Oh Luke….I can see that happening! Thank God you were Ok and your neighbors too! Wow….thank you for your honesty and letting everyone know. Thank you! I didn’t think of it before……
Honey, I am so sorry for your Loss , Dear Me. very good lesson learned i appreciate this so much. Luke, you are such a Good & Honest Man, I so appreciate all your information.
Yes! Very important PSA, thanks so much for sharing, who knows how many lives you'll save by this video! Thanking God nothing serious happened with your experience!
Wow thank you, you potentially just saved my life. I'm digging like a crazed mo fo around the house, past month or so. Geez , i can't believe how careless I've been. Thanks again so much, mad love and respect❤️💪🏼✌🏻 THANK YOU UNIVERSE
Wow! Who would have thought? Thank you for sharing such an important tip. I have so many beds and plants in my yard and never thought. I’m thinking now.
Thank you for saying this. I did not do call when tilling our garden. I never thought to do it. Fortunately for us nothing happened. From now on I will be making that call.
Your open hearted, honest, joyful personality is the reason yours is the main gardening channel I watch. Your information is excellent and I always learn something about Midwest gardening. I’ve returned to Illinois after 30 years in Texas- so I have much to learn here! I appreciate your big heart - thanks for putting it out there Dude:)
Good message! We are putting up a fence to keep the deer out of our garden BUT first on the list is finding out where lines are. I don't want to break lines to the well either.
First, amazing as always, how you are so honest and open. Usually, we learn from experience, and I can only say, this small embarrassment is worth it, if it helps even one person. THANK YOU, for all you do, Luke.
Thank you for sharing your story. I lost a loved one from a propane leak in a line to our home when I was a child. It still effects me to this day. A little embarrassment might save a life. Good for you!
My husband hit our gas miter while parking our 5th wheel. What you described was exactly what we went through 911 call, half of our neighborhood evacuated. If you have a gas miter on the same side as where you park your trailer install steel posts! Accidents happen to us all, that's how we learn! After our accident hubby helped our friend install steel posts which he hit the following year, and avoided the mess we had.
Thank you so much for sharing! We are about to have evergreens put in. I am going to call that service and have our yard checked out. Thank you so much!!!!!
Thanks for sharing this. It’s so easy to forget and assume we know where lines are or that things will be deeper than we’re digging. Never, ever assume. We had a water main up to our house dug up last year and it was not as deep as code requires. Also, the gas line couldn’t be properly traced through the yard by the locator because there was apparently no wire (needed for detection) alongside the buried line.
Hey Luke, I don't normally comment, but I watch all of your videos. I am planning on putting a new t-post fence around my garden this weekend and I didn't even think about calling 811 because I'm not "digging". I will be calling today! Thanks for the reminder and for helping others be safe. Glad everyone was okay!
In Illinois you can call JULIE and they come out and mark the dig space for you. I always call them when adding new beds to the garden. Super easy to call and set up.
Been doing Back to Eden garden this season. I've watered once and immediately after planting. It's 103 here and the garden is still going strong. Great advice about underground lines!
OMGOSH Luke! I am glad you are all ok. Thank you SO much for sharing this story. We have natural gas and dig all the time. Like you, I’ve only called for the big things. I never thought to call for anything else. Thank you for sharing your experience and bringing awareness to us. My head is kinda spinning and thanking God that we are safe cuz we have dug a LOT, even within the past month. Blessings to you.
Oh man, my neighbors hit their gas line a few years ago. Thankfully it was a similar situation and was handled fast and smoothly. And last year my husband cut directly into our buried internet cables. We have all definitely learned this lesson the hard way too, and every time we plant a new tree/shrub we have 811 come out. Thank you for sharing these stories.
Thank you for sharing with your audience. My mom retired from our local utility company and it does happen quite often. They actually add the “rotten egg” smell to natural gas so that it’s detectable by homeowners in case of a leak. Call before you dig 811. ;)
Really appreciate you sharing this. I work for an insurance company and I've been to those house lots where the building is leveled because of exploding gas lines. It's a real danger.
Thank you so much for giving us this information. I was considering planting some fruit trees and had not considered that the lines would be close enough to the surface to be an issue.
Super important info for anyone digging, new homeowners should do this as a standard part of moving in. Thankfully it was no worse and thank you for sharing! How is the new store coming? I can’t wait for a grand opening announcement!!
There is absolutely no reason to be embarrassed. There's a reason for everything and I am so grateful that you shared your story. Honestly, I never considered the possibility of accidentally hitting a gas line or electrical cable while planting my garden. Sharing this information very likely saved some people a lot of hassle by educating them. It may have even saved a life. You never know. Thank you again.
That is a scary thing that happened,. Thanks for sharing with us. 8 am definitely one of those that don't think much about what could be underneath the soil when digging. Now I'm scared. Lol
Thank you sir, for sharing your experience and also for warning us of the hazards below the ground because many of us were unaware of this danger. Thanks again!
Hey Luke, totally unrelated, but could you do a video on cold frames? I saw one that you did, but I’m wondering about growing all winter long. Thanks!!!
@@lynnstanton7018 ~ It’s basically a box with a flip top lid so you can have access to your veggies. It’s set on the top of the area you’re growing in ( there’s no bottom) and it gives you a head start when the temps are really cold and it protects your plants from frost damage. You can search on you tube. Lots of vids on that very subject. Might want to mosey on over to The Rusted Garden with Gary. I think that’s where I saw his. Hope this helps.💜🌱💜
You're not alone, I dug out an in ground garden on the back of my property, I didn't even even consider utility lines. I didn't hit any thankfully. I'll have to take this into consideration next time.
What system do you use for watering that you only have to water once a month? I know you mentioned core gardening with straw, but how do you do it? Also thanks again for some wonderful seeds. I purchase from you and have never been disappointed. The carrots, garlic, onion, chard, are wonderful and the FREE lettuce is still going strong in our green house in California.....
Thank you so much for this information and your honesty. I really enjoy learning from your channel. It has very real value and relevance. May God bless you.
Thank you for your bravery in sharing that Luke. I think that does happen a lot. I almost hit a buried power line where it connected to the meter and it was only about a foot deep! Great and Very Important PSA! Love and blessings! 💜
It's always good to share your mistakes so others don't have to share theirs. We all have "Doh!" moments. That sounds like it could've been worse. Glad it turned out okay. BTW, my garden doesn't seem to be minding the chlorine and I've been watering heavily! I, on the other hand, don't like chlorine. Thanks for the vid!
Wow, thank you for sharing this! We’ve definitely dug a few holes (1-2 feet deep!) and have not called and should have!. Just thinking about planting a ton of stuff in our front yard and we have a gas line running around there somewhere and water. Going to give 811 a ring! Thanks again!
Thank you for sharing. I am pretty eager to plant some fruit trees if I can figure out the best place to put them. - I didn’t even think of checking for where the gas lines cross my property!
Very important video, well done for sharing, I'm sure it will help many people and who knows, save a life. Its going to be hot here, but no where near your temperatures. All the best from the south of England, John
Husband was a lineman forever so no there is no digging without looking. My garden, all from your seeds is doing great after 7 days of rain here! Hope we have a long fall here.
How are you fairing from the floods we're having? We were on a 48 hr. watch & today I thought the high winds were going to uproot my very big Maple tree. I'm just yards from the Yellowstone River & I no longer see the sandbars. We've needed the rain....just not the flooding that's happened elsewhere. I talked w/my pain counselor yesterday who informed me that if anybody needed the hospital in Livingston, they'd have to go to Bozeman Deaconess. I've seen pics & video of homes and poplar trees floating by................looks like something from a California disaster, NOT our beloved MT. Stay safe, ~ Covah
Locates only give you a general idea of the area and they do not indicate depth. Carefully hand dig if you’re within a foot in any direction of the locate marks (paint or flags). Don’t drive your shovel straight down, peel back the area from the top down at a low angle. Never assume depth, and don’t assume the utilities are buried to code. It’s not uncommon for a pipe/cable that’s supposed to be at say, 18” to be encountered at 8. Lastly, if you all of a sudden encounter a gravel layer, stop. You’re likely getting into a utility trench.
My husband was replacing a fence and cut right through the cable line. He knew he cut it about 2 minutes after he cut it when he was almost attacked by our 2 gamer daughters.
We will be putting in new raised beds in our back yard and my husband actually reminded me we needed to call 811 to see what and where lines ran. I honestly hadn't even thought of it, and of course the gas line runs at a kind of weird angle from the meter up to the house right under where at least two of the new beds will go. My state has an online request form you can fill out so you don't even have to call, and it for real only takes 2 or 3 business days for all utility companies to assess all underground lines. You don't have to be home either. Great PSA Luke!
Is it possible for you to do a video on Huckleberries? I'd love to know how to grow them. I've tried many kinds of huckleberry products while i was at Yellowstone last week and it is absolutely delicious. Thought it'd be a cool thing to add to the garden. Love your tip on the gas line flags 👌
It's honestly a great idea to have 811 mark your home when you move in so you don't have this issue and mark it on your As-Built so you know where everything is. Thank you for the reminder and honesty.
Great video. I called Miss Utility a few months back for gardening purposes. I expected utilities in my backyard; I was surprised I had none in back but some in front. Also, I got a bill later from the 3rd party who marked the area (about $35). . . Worth it but not free after all. I am in Baltimore County, MD.
811 should be free everywhere no matter where you live for marking basic utilities that are part of the infrastructure. the only time it should cost you anything is when you have private lines that include but are not limited to; invisible fencing, sprinkler systems, well and septic systems and their power or electric service, water and sewer pipes from the meter to your home, etc.
This is how we heal is when we make ourselves vulnerable and share our experience. That's why God's word says confess your sins one to another and pray for each other that you may be healed. Thank you so much for putting yourself out there!
Thank you for your honesty and letting people know to have your yard marked out before you dig. My husband did the same thing with the electrical cables. Glad that everyone is ok!!

I’ve been digging like crazy and never thought of hitting a line. Thanks for the great info as always 😊
Heh its illegal here to dig without calling. Commercials always on... hey hey call before ya dig. Eh.

Thank you for taking the time to post this video 💖💖💖💖💖💖
Thank you! My husband hit the telephone land line and cut off service. He was mad because it was supposed to be deeper.
Thanks for sharing Luke.
Just got my seeds from MIgardener . Thank you so much 😊
Honestly I wouldn't have thought to call. This was very informative and thanks for putting yourself out there to spread the awareness.
Thank you for that reminder!
Jeez. That is quite scary. I really appreciate you telling us this because I’d never have considered it for trees. It never would have occurred to me.
Good information! Side note: natural gas is odorless, the "rotten egg" smell is added so that people can detect it.
Thanks for the very important reminder.
Thank you so much. I never knew anything was that close to the surface. Good to know.
Wow!! I would’ve never thought about that.
Thanks for sharing. I didn't know to do this. God bless you
Locates only give you a general idea of the area and they do not indicate depth.
Exactly, or an immediate roar of screaming people, lol
