In your situation, the bigger the boulders the better because you have such a large space and when placing a boulder you need to “plant” them in the ground a few inches so it looks like it’s been there naturally forever. Also, I would recommend after placing the cobble in the creek to get some smaller cobble (3/4” or less) to fill in the gaps between the larger stone for a more natural look. I’m a landscaper and have done tons of dry creek beds. (Also studying to become a landscape designer too in the Solano/Yolo county area.)
I do hope there are some berms along the creek bed in the landscape plans.it adds interest and looks more natural since wet creek beds often have raised banks next to them. Your landscape is mostly flat so it would be nice. Also offers a place for those plants that need good drainage.
Wonderful entertaining and informative video, Jason and Janey! It's always extra fun seeing you two together working on a project. I'm always astonished at how much fabulous progress you've made so fast!! 👏👏👏
Hi Janie, Horticulturalist here. I work with arborist regularly and one thing I've learned is that it's also important to consider how the weight is distributed on the tree. I wouldn't recommend cutting that entire limb off that you're mentioning. It looks like it's really the only limb that is bringing weight to that side of the tree. If I were you, I would just trim off that portion that is thinner and leave the thicker portion that is trying to move in the upward direction. You also brought up another good point which is the aesthetic of the tree. I agree that the branch makes it look a lot more appealing from the house view. I hope you consider both of these points! You still have time to strategically prune as it gets a couple years older too. Happy gardening!
Janie, go ahead and cut that branch on the willow tree. Where you cut the branch and in other spots as well, the tree will send out new shoots you can train. I have a globe willow here in AZ. Very similar tree. Getting new branches will not be a problem
Great video, thank you for taking us along for rock shopping. May sound weird, but I love rocks and did get excited with you when you picked the one you could plant in. Keep those rocks in mind that are at your Moms, you may need more as the projects get underway. You could hire someone to deliver them.
You might be able to trim the off shooting branch that’s above and it would take off a bunch of weight. Then the branch might lift up enough for you to train from there. Just a thought!
I cannot wait to see your dry creek bed! I have dreams of putting one in my backyard where we have drainage issues. We are working on transforming our back yard, and I’m usually very impatient and want things done right away. But watching your transformation of this property over the last year has been so inspiring for me to be more patient and let things develop with time. 🥰 so excited for both of us! Hahaha 😂
Re the willow branch, think of it this way… it’s blocking the growth and arrival of a branch with a better shape. The tree will naturally fill in gaps but the oddly growing branch is blocking that from happening while it’s there. Kind of like life really, don’t get in the way of yourself! 😊
We had a willow and had low branches we did have to duck under, but I have such memories of it as a child, like it was walking through a cave or tunnel. I guess your children are older so it makes sense to prune but I like a bit of imperfections in a garden and working around nature.
We recently bought a battery-powered pruner, thanks to seeing your demonstration on use. ❤ We believe it will be a big game changer for us. Thank you for being so dedicated to teaching us while on your gardening journey. 🥰
Hi Janey I planted Tamato plant the same day you planted the Tamato plant in the green house, mine is already flowering , I live in a moderate tropical climate and it's mild winter here
I just watched your waddle fence video from 2 .years ago. What a really neat idea! I’m sure you can find a spot on your property to incorporate this feature and it will add to the whimsical vibe 😊
My snowdrops bloom toward the end of the daffodil season. I buy Early mid and late season daffodils so I have a couple months of daffofils I also have the grape Hyacinths and the bigger hyacinths. I have one daffodil with a bud on it and it still looks alright even after all the freezing temp we have had. Feb is normal for daffodils here in TN. Zone 7. I had one snow drop that bloomed last fall. I also had 3 Azelia Bushes that bloomed last fall and they are the Spring blooming ones. A lot of plants were confused last year. So nice to see your daffodils Blooming. I am excited to see your dry creekbed
Hey Janet! Maybe cut the willow branch that is sticking out of the top off the offending branch? It won’t be weighed down and the tree will get taller.
I'm thinking that if you remove the side branches on the Willow tree limb your not ready to remove the limb will lift up on its own. Less weight to bend it down.
On the willow tree, just cut the end of the one you want to get rid of and work your way up. You'll be surprised how much it will rise when you start taking off some of it. Less is more!! Good luck, I loved my willow tree but we have moved and I miss it!!
Janey-can you fix the willow pruning concern by taking off the heavier top branches off that one branch that points towards the house? They look a bit awkward, so it will improve the look, and removing the weight might allow the remaining branch to spring upwards a bit, out of heads way for when you install the path. I can’t wait to see the rock stream.
Hi Janie 😊. Could you please explain what a leech field is? I just don’t have a clue. And also did you and hubby have to do a LOT of work to convert from the propane tank to electric?
Question: I want to get some automatic pruners but can't decide if I want the hand held or the one with the 3' extension. I have multiple young fruit trees but would also use it for general pruning of grasses and shrubs and it's not in the budget to get both styles. Which do you think is most practical and versatile?
I have a question for you Janey. I apply systemic pesticide on several of our trees this time of year, Hackberry, Crepe Myrtle, are the two that have the most affidavit and ant 🐜 problem. Well, the product is now banned in California. Do you know of an alternative solution? Thank you for any thoughts you may have on the subject. I’ll be getting into my garden this afternoon! You inspire me 💜
Jason is so easy-going. I love it. That was so funny when he laughed and said, “it’s funny because we don’t know how much they are going to charge us until they weigh it.” 😀😀😀 Liz

Great advice Nick to “plant” them in the ground! 👍👍👍 Liz
All great suggestions, will help balance out the area.

If you ever want a quick weekend getaway- stay in Grass Valley and go explore the Yuba River. It is breathtaking!
So excited to see the center island take shape this year! 🧡
It is amazing to see what you all have accomplished in a year! The dry creek bed is going to be beautiful! ❤
I have been doing the terracotta pot method of watering for years near my hydrangeas. Glad to see you using the method as well.

Just cut it Janey…lol. The willow tree will love you for it! You can use it for one of your projects!

We have a dry creek bed in our back yard- love it! I have good luck with everelo “ grass” and some succulents love it too in our zone 8 GA heat!

I love this I love rocks
Interesting varied video. It will be fun to see you and Robbie together
I am excited to see how the dry creek bed takes shape. I would’ve fallen over when being told the price of those big rocks! 😳 Xxx
Thank you
Maybe you could cut the downward growing end of the branch from the willow, leaving the stems that are growing upward.
WOW… How EXCITING that you are starting this project! Getting that propane tank out of the way was a game changer!!! 💙💚💛🧡💜 Liz

Yay! Chickens! I've been missing them!
Bigger is better! You have a huge area to spread it out
Hello Janie can you tell me when you guys prune your orange trees?
Hi Janey🌺 . Nice tour . Good pruning . You can plant tree outside the fence .Janey come and get free rocks from my lands . Have a great day .🌺🌻🌺🌻
Wow ! The tulips ! It’s only January . What is the weather like there ?
Hi Janie 😊. Could you please explain what a leech field is? I just don’t have a clue. And also did you and hubby have to do a LOT of work to convert from the propane tank to electric?
Our local rock place gives master gardeners a discount as a “professional discount” it’s quite a perk!
I need those pruners…
Where can I find them?
😊

Yeah, I think that willow branch needs to go.
Agree, that willow tree branch needs to go!

If you are going to walk on it, be sure it's not noisy to walk on.
