I'm with you. I try to do the least possible and just let the garden grow. I can tell when it needs watering but other than that I've already fertilized when I planted. My soil has been loaded with organic material for 16 years.

I would definitely buy a soil test kit and test your soil before you amend your beds. I had planted seedlings in a garden bed we just built and everything seemed like it wasn't growing well. I bought a soil test kit from Lowe's for around $15. The soil is lacking nitrogen which makes me think the garden soil we got was probably mostly wood chips and not a lot of other organic material. Wood chips rob soil of nitrogen as it breaks down. I amended with worm castings and water with fish emulsions about every 10 days. It seems to be helping since my plants look a lot happier and greener. Check your soil so you can amend it properly.

    • @kjrchannel1480

A lot of people fall prey to the bagged soil really being bagged mulch. Mulch in itself is lacking in Nitrogen like most regular dirt because it is water soluble. I made a couple raised beds from 3/4 clay to 1/4 fresh and aged sifted wood chips. Everything worked out good. My virgin clay like in most p!aces is really alkaline, high in phosphorous, low in potassium, and low in Nitrogen from leaching out. Soil tests are good to get an idea. Although they won't tell you if that batch of Coco Coir was high in salt, or if some herbicides came in that retail bag of processed green waste from whereabouts unknown.

I highly recommend shade cloths for really really hot days. My tomatoes all had really curled leaves and I was worried they had some kind of disease but it ended up that it was just WAY too hot for them. After shading, their leaves stopped curling and the flowers stopped falling off. Now the tomatoes are growing like crazy and I see tons of flowers for new tomatoes.

I recently had leaf damage to all my veggies and was researching trying to figure out what would eat all the leaves. I was praying over what to do and started wandering around my yard and garden and noticed that those that had some protection from trees or larger leaves had no damage then I remembered we had a hail storm the day before and they had been damaged from that. Thankfully I didn't treat for something I wasn't sure about that was causing damage. I attribute that to prayer, God gave me wisdom I didn't have. I was going to assume and treat. Now a couple days later things are looking better

Since I have no shade area outside. I made a compost container out of my old kitchen garbage can. Now food veggies scraps and failed plants can end up in there. I attached a car deodorizing tree on handle. The top fits tight so there is no smell. A tip for apt. Dwellers with no space and want to feed and have soil to amend. Thanks Luke for all your great information 👍

I like to introduce additional nutrients slowly, so at quarter strength at first and gradually increase if I am not happy with the progress of the plant,
I think helps it to stop it from locking out as I have burned plants in the past with nutes but never since I started the gradual process.

Years ago, the first time i made a raised bed i included unaged MANURE in the fill. Boy did i get tomato leaves that year. Crazy wild vines, no fruit!
Later i learned, manure has a lot of nitrogen. Nitrogen makes LEAVES. Tomatoes DO NOT benefit from extra nitrogen! They like a little phosphorus (bone meal), but NOT excessive nitrogen.

I built raised beds this year, and looking to save money, used a local horse manure for the majority of my filler. I tried to mix in bagged compost and/or potting soil (in layers). Some of my plants are green and lush, and some are yellow and rough looking (including browning around the edges of leaves. My assumption is that some of the manure may have been to fresh. My assumption is also that there isn't much I'm going to be able to do to counter this but let the plants work thru it. If there is something I can add to counter this effect I'd love to know. Plants affected include half of my cucumbers, pole beans, a couple tomato plants and jalapeno plants. Thanks for any thoughts. I had considered adding coffee grounds and eggshells around the tomato plants....but am unsure if that would help or add to the issue. Planted almost everything from seed this year, direct seeding to the beds, with the exception of the tomatoes which I started in compostable pots so I could put the plants in deeper. Haven't tested the soil yet, figured I'd do that next year when everything had time to settle. My compost pile was still a little to small to even try to fill the beds but I was thinking about getting another load of the manure and mixing that in with the compost pile for next years topping. Thanks again! Love your channel!

In May, we had great 80 temps and some good rain. June, were back in the mid to upper 90's and windy again. Really struggling this year.

This year I let some Spinach, Chard and Beets overwinter and noticed patchy leaf browning. At first I thought a new neighbor hired an overzealous lawn care company and over sprayed my plants. It was obvious some was applied by dying plants on their side. I then found some sick plants further away from the fence. I looked closer and discovered there was larva inside the leaves. Some healthy looking leaves have tiny white eggs on the bottom. I walked by a big Elm tree and saw thousands of leaves had leaf miners in them as well. I do have my share of Aphids along with outnumbered Lady bugs. This years mid may frosts and snow hopefully killed the Earwig horde dramatically. The pest frustration is always changing it seems to take up the slack.

it is much harder to farm and especially to container garden than programs like this would have you believe. Many of us are doing badly and thinking it is just us. There is really nothing that addresses the quality of the products we buy to grow that may affect things. Plants are not ID'd as to determinate or indeterminate, specific variety, and many places sell products that are not really appropriate for the zone. The stores just sell and make the money and we have the dead plants and no produce. Staff in stores know little to nothing about farming and are of no help. I have a lot of dead plants in the ground and in containers and I am losing hope--- ready to give up honestly. One zucchini plant= one zucchini, 1 $20 cherry tomato plant for 5 cherry tomatoes, this is a bad investment.

Does anyone here have any idea what could be eating roundish holes in my banana pepper leaves? I still can't find anything on them but they're constantly getting eaten up. I've seen regular house flies and love bugs around them but that's all. I do have leafhoppers, spittle bugs, tomato hornworms and an occasional stink bug that I've found on other plants. The holes are different than what those do. I'm so over it at this point. Thanks!

Did great the first two years. This year, one of the beds planted with Brandywine tomatoes' are stunted even after adding fertilizer. Not sure what's happening. The other two beds with tomatoes and green beans are doing great. One of the Raised beds was used as a chicken hoop cope over the fall and winter. They are doing great!

I have raised beds that I got from Amazon that are 2x6 feet, about 1.5 feee deep, made of heavy cloth like materiel. The tomato’s and peppers are doing great, but I do worry about the watering and fertilizer for these types of beds. We have been w/o rain for about 5-6 weeks. I have been watering daily, the peppers heavier than the Tomatoes. However, some of the tomatoes are having the upward leaf curl. I check the soil for dryness, I water bases on that. I have tomatoes in the ground also, which mr cherry tomatoes in the ground have shown sone leaf curl but that goes away as the sun goes down. The tomatoes I. The ground get watered no more than every 3-4 days even during the dry spells. The big question is, does the think raised cloth beds loose alot of water to evaporation? I also have the plants well mulched with straw to help maintain moisture as well. I use fish fertilizer every few weeks and a general liquid fertilizer every few weeks. Thank you for your videos, you and farmer Scott are my favorites. Everything you recommend is great, keep it up!!! Thank you again

I just wanted to add that I am in MN on the line almost of zone 3 and 4. I usually go with zone 3. I know that doesn't matter for killing cut worms though. Thanks again for any advice you can give!

I have a serious infestation of tiny grasshoppers. I’m using neems oil and have ordered diatomaceous earth. Last year they ate absolutely everything to the stems including flowers.

I have recently been realizing that my saved seeds are doing better than bought seeds. This is sad because I am new to seed saving.I have not many saved seeds. I haven't purchased my seeds from you, so this is a wake up call to me. I will be shopping seeds from you this year.

Luke, Hope you can help me. I'm in VA zone 9, started seed tomatoes indoors, then planted them in my 8" deep planters late April - the slicer varieties are a healthy 4 ft yet not flowering much. Also, my cucumbers are 4 ft & loaded with flowers but they're dropping off without fruiting. Do you know why? ( my beds have dirt ammended with organic soil, compost, bio-tone granuals & worm castings.)

      Add compost

If u r adding fertilizer , you should check the numbers of NPK Nis for nitrogen . If that number is high it only promotes leaves no flowers or fruit . A higher P ( phosphorus ) number promotes flowers and k (potassium)
      Promotes fruit and vegetables

Does anyone have any advice for an effective treatment for flea beetles? I've tried a neem oil spray but it does not seem to be working. I don't want to use anything too strong that could hurt any beneficial bugs. Thanks for the helpful videos!

My problem? growth stagnation (tomatoes, peppers, melons, and beans) Must send off a soil sample. Going to apply Sassy Lass. Can't hurt, right? Leafy greens, potatoes, carrots, cukes, and onions are growing just fine.

When I was a kid (a long time ago) we always had a garden. I'll soon be 60 but just getting into gardening. We would put lime on out green beans to help with pest. Do you recommend this?

I had a problem like that but it wasn't the rain. Everyday one or two of my freshly planted tomatoes would fall over dead. My problem was the little rolly pollies. I had placed walls of water on all my tomatoe plants. I realized I trapped all the little bugs in with the plant. Usually they are beneficial only eating dead matter on the surface on the ground. But when there was nothing dead left to eat inside the walls of water they went for the tomatoe plant. I could see at the base of the plant where they were eating away at it like a lumber jack chopping down a tree.
