In 1870s, his only son died due to scarlet fever. A year after, the Great Chicago fire happened and almost all of his investment were burned to the ground. To lift the family spirits, he encouraged them to attend a Christian rally in England. He was called back due to work so he asked his family to board a ship and go before him. The ship was struck by another vessel in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. All of his daughters died and only his wife was rescued. On his way to pick up his wife, he passed the place where the ship sank. While looking at the waters that claimed his daughters lives, he wrote the first few lines of the song: "when peace like a river, attendeth my way. When sorrows like sea billows role. Whatever my lot, though has taught me to say. It is well, it is well with my soul."

To me, when the entire congregation sings acapella, each and every soul in the service is now an instrument for God's worship. You're a part of it in a way that you don't get if you are just a person in the audience while a choir sings and/or a band plays. And you're not singing along with the music in the way you would be with the band or choir. You ARE the band. You ARE the choir. You ARE the instrument making music unto the Lord.

Excellent work. I particularly love your bass lines. And I appreciate the purely vocal expressions of these great songs, as opposed to the flowery, elaborate instrumentals a lot of Christian music features. A simple, 'stripped-down' sound brings out the profundity of the lyrics much better, in my opinion. Blessings!

In a late change of plan, he sent the family ahead while he was delayed on business concerning zoning problems following the Great Chicago Fire. While crossing the Atlantic, the ship sank rapidly after a collision with a sea vessel, the Loch Earn, and all four of Spafford's daughters died. His wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, "Saved alone …". Shortly afterwards, as Spafford traveled to meet his grieving wife, he was inspired to write these words as his ship passed near where his daughters had died.

Monotone would mean that all the notes are the same. You're right that most of my recordings lack 'feeling'. But that's not the main purpose of these recordings. If I can get just one more person learning a hymn that they've never known or get one more person learning to sing a harmony part, I'll be happy!

I personally like to sing the last verse considerably faster than the first verses, since the lyrics speak of "haste[ning] the day" of His return.
