To celebrate the release of Final Fantasy XVI, I decided to release 16 videos ranking different aspects of the Final Fantasy series. In this video, we're going to rank the worlds of the main series games, plus Tactics.

Imo XII is the best world by far and it's not even close (without even including Tactics)
Still great to see X win tho the art in the world of X is the most beautiful one imo but XII branches out so much having so much more exploration than all other mainline non MMO ones that XII would be my pick times out of ten
Watching through all of these, I think you should do a video describing where you would place 16 on each of these lists!!!
I don't own a PS5 (can't afford one atm) so I haven't played XVI yet. I did watch the cutscenes and I thought the story was very good, I think the cast is excellent and the soundtrack is fire.

FFX is great and deserves the W here. That's one reason I really wanted to do multiple rankings, because each of these games excel in different areas and it's nice to shine spotlights on all of them.

I've been so tempted to get into FFXI recently, and you're really selling it in these videos. I have always hated the idea of MMOs, and hated that the genre was represented in the mainline Final Fantasy series. I finally started FFXIV about a year ago and adore it, and as a big fan of the series, and having gotten over the MMO hump, I feel like I need to give XI a shot as well.
It's like a great grandfather that might not be the most exciting person to hang out with, but he's got cool stories, plus you know he ain't gonna be around forever and you want to get that time in before someone shuts down grandpa's servers for good.
Just seeing this comment now, but I fully endorse giving XI a shot! I absolutely adore it and found it to be incredibly worthwhile. The fact that XI offered a brand new expansion that just wrapped up around the time of these videos in mind-blowing. There's so much great stuff in there. I fully recommend giving it a shot, especially since you've gotten through XIV.

For me its XIV, XII and IX. There is so much life and mystery in em.
They definitely have a lot of life, mystery, and vibrancy for sure.
Gonna have to disagree with you my friend. My favourite world is Ivalice. I mean I love all the other Final Fantasy worlds, don't get me wrong. But FFXII felt like the most "LIVING" world if you get my drift. I still remember going through the city of Rabanastre, and it actually felt like a really bustling city.
I would also say that Ivalice is a huge massive world and that FFXII and Tactics etc. all take place in different continents and/or regions. So of course in XII there's Arcadia, Damascus etc. but I truly think all that is happening in one continent within Ivalice. Ivalice is just a huge massive world, that I think has either now just been fully covered, or that there's a different region we haven't yet covered just yet. Regardless, Ivalice is the best world imo. So alive, so many things that are different, and I can't fault it. I'd even say Ivalice is just overall a really political world. I do LOVE Spira though, and that takes runner-up for me. I like them for very different reasons, but something about Ivalice sticks out.
I do think Ivalice is a well done world and anything in the top 6 is a fair contender for best world in the series. I think the inconsistency of Ivalice is the biggest knock against it for me (a side-by-side comparison between OG Tactics and XII makes them seem like they are completely disconnected), but I think that despite that flaw, it's still one of the best worlds in the FF series and I don't begrudge anyone ranking it #1. I think that's completely reasonable. The MMO style games (XII, XI, and XIV) all have some of the strongest worldbuilding in the series. I'm not sure if you've played XI or XIV, but if you're into XII those games are big recommendations and the closest feeling to XII out of other games in the series.
In terms of depth and lore with ties to the story and side stories, FFXIV wins for me, hand-down. If I just played base ARR (2.0), I will rank it mid-tier but experiencing all the world (and beyond the it...) it has to offer, it definitely hits the top spot. I like FFX and FFVII near the top as well. FFXIII and FFXII/Tactics after that then FFVI, IV and XIV. Agree that the first FF will rank lower for me.
Any thoughts on XI?
@@gregtroyan Kind of hard for me to give a proper formed opinion about XI since it is the only FF that I haven’t played long enough or finished properly. So I’ll probably be withholding my opinion on this one. But despite my personal rankings, most of the FF titles even FFI through VI, I thoroughly enjoyed and liked. 😁
I'm surprised to not see any Ivalice titles on the Top 3. Good ranking though.
The top bunch of worlds are all extremely high quality stuff. It's possible I should have bumped Ivalice above the XIII-verse, but I feel pretty good about ranking it below the worlds of XI, XIV, VII and X.

I would have to put ff12 at the number 1 spot. You gave it an unfair critique getting caught up in ivalice talk comparing to the other ivalice worlds. Ff12 has rich lore in their game and history and establish nations and super powers at war with each other. Also ff12 cities actually feel like a city filled with a believable population offering endless dialog and multple districts giving it an actual city structure.
Respectfully, I disagree. I think it's fair to look at Ivalice as a whole. Ivalice is supposedly considered to be one world, so, either all of it is included, or XII and Tactics are firmly in different worlds with no connection. I don't think it's an unfair critique to point out the inconsistency across the entries when part of the selling point of the Ivalice Alliance was that they were all the same world. I still think it's a very good Final Fantasy world, hence it ranking higher, and honestly, I could see myself swapping Ivalice with XIII's world, but I don't think it's better than the worlds of XI, XIV, VII and X.

Same XII might not be all that great but the world definitely feels like it's the best implemented one in FF
