When Jesse said "don't exploit them" about FF2, I was so happy 😂 people's complaints about 2 are so silly lolol. FF2 is one of my all time favorites haha
Awesome video! There's so much to unpack here, and honestly, while I have a completely different ranking of the games, I agree with practically everything. FF6 is my second favorite, but you guys did a great job critiquing the ways it's not perfect. If Terra and Celes were combined? Easily would be a top 3, if not my favorite FF protagonist My ranking, worst to best: 1 3 5 7 9 2 4 8 15 13 10 6 12 As somebody with wildly different takes than you two, I still agreed with mostly everything and that was awesome!
A very different ranking, but a genuinely interesting one that makes a lot of sense based on your tastes. I know another guy who's favorite is XII, so even if it appeals less to me personally, I still like it and still get it. I love your ranking and think it's super cool because it's very you and because I know you love all the games too. We gotta stream together sometime again, mate. Cheers!
I feel like the character designs in XIII are just trying to be the characters in X but not nearly as good. They feel like they’re trying if that makes sense instead of just existing.
I don't really feel that. To me, it feels like the designs in XIII are Nomura just doing what he does, but he decided to scale back after how over-the-top he went in X. If anything, it felt like Nomura was trying to balance being iconic with subtle.
@gregtroyan is a tough act to follow, his rankings videos are extremely well made, I'm just happy to be a guest on the stream! I appreciate the sentiment RPGranked!
That's fair. I haven't played it and haven't watched every cutscene, so I'm not an expert, but from what I've seen I was impressed. What themes specifically do you think they are undermining?
@@gregtroyanI think with the edition of the multiverse angle, it takes away the theme of life and death. Why should Aerith's death or Zack's sacrifice mean anything if you can go and get them in another universe. If you can change your fate, which the writers are implying with this, how does one learn to deal with such tragedy and move on from it, another important theme of the game. There are a few other points I have, but if you are willing, there is a channel called Orion85 that can put things much more eloquently than I can. I don't begrudge people enjoying Remake or Rebirth, especially if it leads them to discovering and enjoying the original. I just found I did not enjoy the changes.
@@climber6500 I don't think the multiverse thing takes away from the themes of life and death, because the Zack and Aerith from different universes are different people, and the themes of loss and grief are still being explored in ways that tease the player with the emotions of hope only to rip them away and force them to relive the grief all over again. The Aerith from that world is dead and gone, and the acceptance of that I think will lead to some powerful emotional moments in Part 3. I get what you're saying, I get why you feel that way, and in general I've been a skeptic of the Remake story project. Rebirth's approach to theme and character won me over and I am cautiously optimistic.
@@gregtroyan I do see where you are coming from. I guess it just hits different with me. It feels like they cheapen the meaning going this route. I think multiverses and differing timeliness would have worked better in a remake of 8.
@@climber6500 It would work better with VIII, and it's not as good as the original. It is, however, still good enough to justify its existence, at least based on what I've seen.
@@gregtroyanAnd now I see he was very quiet on "fixing" FFVI. You both spent like 2 secs on how to fix the "masterpiece", probably because of the fact it does not need fixing. Let's just stop this charade. You both would recommend VI if someone were choosing to play only one FF game in their lifetime. The end.
IX is probably the best representation of the whole series in a single game. There are some who would argue XIV is, but given XIV's really weird gameplay in comparison to the rest of the franchise, and, in my opinion, weaker storyline and characters (at least in A Realm Reborn), I would absolutely say IX is the game I would recommend to people who only want to play one FF game that represents the franchise as a whole. IX is a great, character driven journey with some of the best inter-personal party dynamics in the whole franchise (which was a weak spot of VI given the bloated cast). It goes back to the fantasy roots of the series while implementing story telling devices it developed in VI, VII, and VIII. Sakaguchi (the creator of the franchise) states that it is his favorite game in the series, it's my wife's favorite, and a lot of fans argue it is the best representation of the franchise as a whole. There's debate as to whether or not it's better than VI, VII, X, and XIV, but it's in the conversation with those games pretty consistently. I recommend buying a copy on Steam or Switch if you have one.

I love that XIII and XV are in your top 5. That's awesome.
While Tactics 1 easily has the best story, i think A2 is all around my favorite of the 3, as crazy as that may be
I definitely see the appeal of all 3 and can see why somebody would pick any of them as their favorite of the 3.

Palom and Porom should be 8. In the Remake cutscenes they look 8.
Jesse definitely agrees with you they need to be aged up.

Hard disagree about Remake and Rebirth. I don't like what they did with the story and think it actually goes against the themes of the original.
