Is the Korg SV1 88 Still Relevant? vs Roland RD2000

  • The SV-1 can still be purchased new, but yet its design is 10 years old! Since it turned 10 this year, I decided to compare it against a much newer keyboard and see how it stacks up, and if it is still relevant.

I am a pro k.p. i own a motif, nord stage 3, and the sv1. In terms of fender sv1 takes the cake. When i bought it i had the same chois between the rd 2000. Today i still have a wow factor every time i play on it. Both are amazing tools but the korg has soul in it. Really work of love.

I'm re-watching this review ahead of the SV-2 release next week; very interested to know your take on the new SV-2! The (Kawai-sourced) action is supposedly the same as the one used on the SV-1... and you didn't mention the weight or speed of it compared to, say, the MP11SE (...which, given your praise of, it's something of a benchmark in my mind.)
I like your style of review - long takes (jump-cut free) and interesting, unhurried commentary from an enthusiast makes them feel like personal advice from a colleague - and considering the pedigree and variety of instruments you've played, I'm happy to have stumbled across your channel when my search started. Subbed in anticipation of the SV-2 vs MP11SE review... Keep up the good work!

    Great, laid back comparison :-)
I love the SV-1 too! Very inspirational. Impressed with the similarity of the piano. Two notes though:
    - Korg SV-1 is NOT Kawai's RH3, but Korg's in-house built RHIII. Yes, it's super-confusing, but there is HUGE difference.
    - SV-1's amp goes through that tube on the left. It's not digital-only simulation. And the EQ makes a lot of difference in the tone (e.g. when you talked about Rhodes having low bass, can be adjusted).

The SV-1 is still an awesome instrument, but to unlock its full potential, you need to take advantage of the additional AMP Models, FX, and Cabinet options etc. that are only accessible via the SV-1 Editor software that ships with the SV via a PC, Laptop or tablet.

There are some layered piano/string sounds in the other sound packs which you need to install using a computer. You can change up other things too like splits using the Korg program. I'm worried it's going to become outdated, so I'm keeping an old computer un-upgraded around just to change it. It's so nice to just flip it on though and play- I leave it set up in my office. My wife surprised me on my birthday with it- I always played the one at the local music store.

Great review. Some folks feel the Yamaha S90ES had the best grand piano sample of any electronic synth ( due to the recording eng. using better techniques on the sample capture ). It would be fun for you to borrow one and do a "is the Yamaha S90ES still relevant" review. The SV1 is just an unusual cool instrument and it's good to see it's still relevant. Thanks again for your review.

Thanks for the review I own and love so much the RD2000. You can mix so many sounds together so the combinations are basically endless and I'm always coming up with new and great ones. If you play just the Deep Concert piano, that's worth the price right there. You'd think you were in Carnegie Hall. I only play with headphones. I wish you would play Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu using the Deep Concert sound and let me know what you think.

Here at the studio we use Roland KC-350 amps for the digital keyboards, they work well and have a good, full sound that is nice for piano sounds. If you're unhappy with the Roland RD2000, you might want to look at a Kawai MP11SE, which has a very warm and rich piano sound. Depending on where you bought your keyboard from, you might be able to return it, and try something different.

Love my sv 1. Played every keyboard at Sweetwater. Couldn't put this one down. It's just amazing. Heavy for gigging but I've only ever used weighted key keyboards so typical. I love the sound. Love the feel. It replaced a Kurzweil. I've also had older Roland's. My non gig toys are a clavinova and a Steinway and I seldom play them. I'm always at my Korg. Can't say enough about it. Would recommend it to anyone. Korg makes a wah pedal gets that real organ feel and acts as a true wah pedal in the effects. Leading to some amazing funky bass lines with clavi's. If you're a musician and ever have the opportunity to play on one, don't pass it up. It's a joy.

Excellent comparison of these two KB's. Its obvious that the Roland is a more up-to-date KB, it sounds more realistic. The 88 is $600 more than the SV1 88. I don't know if Roland has improved the reliability of the RD series pianos, I know the earlier models had some major problems and failed. I did have a Roland Piano at one time, it was an HP series electric piano that was intended to be used in a home, but I had to use it as a Portable piano and that took its toll. I actually wore the action out on that piano in one year, and the dealer cheerfully replaced the action under warranty! Dealers like that don't exist anymore. I would be reluctant to buy another Roland KB, I've had much better reliability from Yamaha equipment.

    really enjoyed the video!
i was very interested in the SV1 ten years ago when i read the reviews in the magazines and i got my hands on it at the next dealer. great sounds and i really loved the vintage style user interface with sturdy buttons and knobs for everything and no silly menues and sub-menues.... but as i did not really need a new stage piano, i did not purchase it. and i somehow thought, ok it is nice but might be a very niche instrument and no one will be talking about it in 3 years.... but no, it is still available in 2019 as new and that is quite amazing and speaks for its quality.
btw - the reason why i did not feel any urge to buy the SV1 was that i've already had the general music (GEM) promega3 since some years earlier. i wonder if you maybe could do a video about the promega3? it came out around 20 years ago and so it is almost a vintage instrument now, but i still use it and i think it still sounds great, looks amazing and is very straight foreward to use with its 4 individually controllable sound groups (and only a small menu and display for some global functions and settings). the technology they used was quite innovative for the time (combination of samples and physical modeling etc).
a finnish group acquired the bankrupt GEM some years ago and came up with a promega2+, an updated version of the promega2, which was a smaller version of the promega3, you certainly heard about that. when i tested it in a store i was actually a bit surprised that it seemed to sound just like my old P3.......
so maybe if you can get one of these, i would be interested in your opinion (and comparison to the new P2+ or other instruments)! :)

I think a comparison with the Nord Electro HP would be nice. I think it's a similar price, and the controls are kind of similar.
What I recall from 10 years ago was that I liked all of the Rhodes like sounds, but the grand piano was barely good enough.
Haven't seen them used on sale in the Netherlands, so it was no consideration when I bought a stage piano.

  • @ChristofRoeyaert

You should have compared it to the Korg Grandstage, since that's more or less the 'unofficial' successor to the SV-1... I happen to like both, and don't know which one to get (would be using the Vox Continental as a second tier)...

    • @ThePianoforever
      @ThePianoforever  4 роки тому +2

I played a Korg Grandstage, but I opted to leave it out of this series because I felt it was pretty average. Not bad, not great, just somewhere in the middle, and for the price point, a better quality keyboard could be purchased, in my opinion. Between the two, I'd rather have my SV1. As for the Vox Continental, it sounds and plays completely different from the original, as with all of these vintage reproduction instruments. If you like it, then by all means use it, but from what I've seen, it does nothing especially well.
