    I always judge a keyboard by its electric piano sound. For me it’s always about that Rhodes or Wurlitzer emulation. I used to think that my Korg sv1 sounded just like a Rhodes, until I actually got a Rhodes. Then I played them both side by side. OUCH!

    Thanks for your good review! I'm a professional pianist, very difficult to be pleased by any digital keyboard. I've always been fan of Yamaha, and have had almost all their stage pianos (CP-4 my last one). My last Roland was the RD-600 which made me promise myself I'd never buy Roland again (sound was good in its time, but key system was weak and chap, breaking in every performance!). All I look for when buying a keyboard is a great and NATURAL piano sound that responds EXACTLY to what I picture in my mind in terms of sound color and intensity. I've owned the RD-2000 for one year. Though in the store I wasn't crazy about the sound I fell in love with the most FABULOUS ACTION ever found in a digital stage piano. I decided to buy it not just for this, but because after a thorough exploration of the manual in the store, I realized it was posible to PERSONALIZE every single V-Piano Technology sound (the best ones in the instrument), not just in terms of EQ, effects, hammer noise, string resonance, damper noise, cabinet resonance, lid, etc., but specially in terms of individual VOICING of each of the 88 keys! You can change in every key, separately, the timbre OR CHARACTER of the sound, from dark and mellow to bright and crispy, the individual VOLUME and even the individual TUNNING of each note you play. This is just fantastic and never before found in any other keyboard. I've spent hundreds of hours doing this during the last year in just my 6 favorite acoustic pianos. The results are just AMAZING!! IT FEELS AND SOUNDS just like a REAL GRAND PIANO (actually like 6 different real grand pianos!), exactly designed to my personal taste, but ONLY AFTER ALL THIS WORK. I'm really happy now with this instrument. I can make MUSIC with it and be able to communicate my feelings and emotions almost as exactly as I do with a real quality grand. Obviously you can save all these personalized sounds in an external USB. My only question/complain is... Why Roland musicians and designers didn't do this in the Factory and released an instrument with gorgeous factory sounds??? I'm sure a lot of sales are lost because of this. A real shame! Most employees at music stores don't even now how configurable the RD-2000 sounds are! And most musicians don't have the patience or time to do it.

      ALBERTO MACEDO I agree I still have mine Yamaha CP4 because the keybed is simply amazing and the pianos in it is super great without doing a lot of editing. I noticed with Roland products concerning the pianos you have to edit them. Roland is the best as far as synths, Bass, brass etc..... not pianos. Yamaha pianos out of the box pianos is better.

      I think the rd2000 default piano sound is not a 'supernatural' piano but the roland V-piano. That is why it is so editable. The supernatural sounds are generally not very editable.

    • @maxmaximus4349

      It is very very interesting, ALBERTO! Could you please share your tuning parameters/settings for at least a few pianos (or if it's not so difficult, then for ALL 6 grand pianos)? This would be very important for many pianists who own the RD 2000! Thank you!

      @@silverlight2004db You are completely right. The 6 pianos I refer to are the called V-Pianos and start with an "S". These are the ones I configured exactly to my test and ear. They are the ones you can make a "voicing" work. I'll correct my text now. Thank you! The supernatural pianos are not so editable en fact.

    I bought this 3 years ago because it has a lot of features and I thought I could have fun with it. Wasn't too knowledgeable about piano sounds and all those details yet so I thought the pianos sounded realistic at first. Now I use it with Pianoteq. Pretty overkill for its purpose now but I still have those extras just in case I need them. At least the key action is great, that's what matters most now to me. It does look like a spaceship too

    One point of correction: Prior to the advent of electricity ALL pipe organs AND reed organs were touch-sensitive. These (known as tracker organs) are mechanically connected from key through to pipe - as acoustic pianos are mechanical.
    Electronic organs generally are not touch-sensitive. Pipe organs with electric, electro-pneumatic, or electromechanical actions are not touch sensitive.

I truly am a big fan of your lavish work. Now, I need your professional opinion. I'm debating between the fp 90 and the rd 2000. The budget is not a problem. I'm just wondering if that significant price difference, relevant to sound, key quality and features are actually worth that price jump. Thank you for your time and effort.

    So refreshing to get honest reviews from someone who doesn't come across as scared of offending the manufacturer of the product. Influencer marketing has been slowly sapping objectivity from many UA-cam gear review channels. If you had to choose one for studio and occasional performance, would you opt for the RD-2000 or the CP88? Key action, acoustic piano sounds, and electric piano sounds being the top priorities, but all factors considered. Or do you have a different top choice in that product tier?

    I played this keyboard at my local guitar center to see if I could tweak the piano sound like I did with my RD-700 but in the end I was still disappointed in the artificial aspects of all of the piano variations. Another thing I noticed with the piano sounds is that the high ranges and low ranges sounded really good with crisp bass on the low end and chirpy highs that weren't tinny. That being said, the mid-range (where most of the playing occurs) is where the RD-2000 fell short and sounded the most artificial. Unfortunately my local store didn't have any Kawai keyboards to try out. I'd really like to try out the MP11SE for myself.

    You played The Lick, awesome playing. Leslie simulation is always lacking in a workstation, stage keyboard, or synth. I go with the Jimmy Smith sound (3 drawbars). They need to put a Neo Ventilator 2 or similar inside, but they want you to buy their organ to get the real sound. Most gigging musicians will have a workstation, and an organ with a Leslie pedal.

    Great review. I still love this one it’s a pity you didn’t got time to look at the different piano sounds but as you said there are just to many. One thing I want to ask you is which keyboard would you recommend as a home keyboard for practice? And please not a very expensive one. Of course it depends on which sounds you prefer but in general. Any thoughts?

    • @ThePianoforever
      @ThePianoforever  4 роки тому +1

      It would really depend on what you would think was expensive. I just reviewed a Kawai ES8 that I thought was a good buy for the money and had very nice built in speakers. I will be uploading it in a few days (maybe Saturday). I think they run about $1,500.00 and that is not cheap, but I thought it was very nice for the money and would cost about $1,000.00 less than this one and you could add a amp later if you wanted or not.

    Thank you for your review of the RD 2000. Have you played the Kurzweil Forte SE? I’m ready for a new keyboard and have narrowed it down between these two (I think). I’ve not played the Forte SE, and would love a comparison. Thanks!

    • @ajax7ox729
      @ajax7ox729 2 роки тому

      The forte se is definitely worth it for the current price it’s $1600 compared to the $2600. There both awesome it just comes down to feature. The se is older and uses a sample engine vs modeling, the vast technology is awesome for organs but nearly impossible to edit. It’s very deep but not user friendly at all. The forte se is grate for the price and competes well.

    Great review. All your reviews seem to address the issues that actually matter to us as keyboard players that don't really get talked about, including any faults, etc. Will you ever be looking at the Yamaha YC61? It seems to sound more 'alive' than other keyboards but I would love to know what you think, especially in terms of on stage usability, ease of sound transitions and layering, etc.

    • @ThePianoforever
      @ThePianoforever  4 роки тому

      I had originally planned on getting a YC61 early in 2020, but then I decided to focus more on digital pianos, beginning at the entry level and working up from there. In the future, I would love to do a video series about "clonewheel" organs, or organs that emulate the sound of a vintage tonewheel Hammond organ. The YC61 will most likely be featured in this series, if I ever get the time to do it! :D I heard the YC61 being played quite frequently when I was at the NAMM show, and it does sound pretty interesting. It appears to have a very similar layout to the CP73/88, which had a very simple, intuitive user interface, and from the limited time I spent with the YC61 it seemed equally as simple to use as the CP88.

    Roland kinda got the RD2000 wrong in terms of fitting it to the expectations of many stage piano users. The default patches/programs it comes with don't sound good to a fair number of users who are used to sample based stage pianos. Roland thought everyone would know to dig into the menus and tweak away for hours until they got the sound they were happy or content with. And of course plenty of people either haven't tried or had a bit of a go and didn't get what they wanted easily so gave up.
    The other side is the use of it. Roland know that most audiences listening to stage pianos (e.g. a rock gig) don't know or don't care how artificial they sound. The people playing them might care, but the audience don't. Studio wise, it is clearly set up pretty well for playing PC/Mac stuff so you are never stuck with the internal sounds.
    It's a very good board for those who have the patience and skill to make full use of the Starship Enterprise controls on it and don't mind the lack of a music rest.

Look for one called West Coast and another called Midied Grande. A worship group that I was playing keys for one time a couple of years back had this keyboard, and I was using all of these older sounds that I knew from my 1080. 6 hours was enough to completely psychoanalyze and diagnose the RD 2000, laughing.
    I would still be getting it out of the box. and playing with the bubble wrap.
    Great share. I am off the Kawai MP11SE because it doesn't have the B3 voices. Would love the MP11SE wooden keys, but off that keyboard because of that. I know, I know, with such a great feel it is supposed to be a piano keyboard, not an organ keyboard.

    Let me preface this by saying I'm a fan of Roland products generally but the RD2000 really fell short of my expectations. As an FP-60 owner, the mediocre piano sound is exactly why I chose not to buy it. The Rhodes sound is also pretty mediocre and don't even get me started on the organs, which sound muffled and lifeless (I have a Viscount clonewheel, for comparison). And yes, the Leslie simulation is terrible. But yes, as a general purpose keyboard, the versatility is undeniable but the quality of the samples are just underwhelming on the whole.

    The stage piano (Roland RD-2000) doesn't sound very well but you play up to highest standards! So 99% for your skill and 60% for the instrument ...

      You probably won't be able to get one that cheap. Sometimes, the RD-2000 Facebook group has one for sale cheap, but cheap in this case means like 1500£

    The sounds are terrible. Reminds me of a Roland sound canvas module from 25 years ago.
