Hey Emma! I am from Germany and looked up the case, "Nothing bad can happen" is based on. Many Scenes from this Movie, which i could hardly sit throgh, seem to be very accurate. The religious aspect of the story was added by the filmmaker Katrin Gebbe. The case, the Film is based on, happened around the years 2002/2003 in Udenhausen near Kassel in Germany. Werner and Michaela H. took the slightly mentally disabled Thies F. into care, took his welfare, forced him into Prostitution and abused him in many ways till he died at the age of 30. A friend of the family, who knew about the torture that was going on, testified it in court in 2007. In the articles i read, many scenes from the film were described as well to have happened in realitiy. It was an cruel cycle of abuse, in which the whole family was involved. The cruelty behind closed doors, the fear to oppose them and the ignorance of bystanders seem to be always the same dynamic. I saw some parrallels to "The woman" by Lucky Mckee as well. Sorry, if my english isn't that good 🙂 I love your channel and your recommendations a lot, all the best for you!
It's very rare that I cannot finish a movie, but Nothing Bad Can Happen just creeps into your blood with dread. Every part of me just knew what was coming and I couldn't watch. It's literally like watching innocence be utterly destroyed. I guess I found my boundaries.
It's such a good but challenging film. The ending just twists the knife even more. I watched it at a film festival and had to skip my last movie cuz it just got me.
This is one of the only films I had to stop watching. I can withstand a lot of disturbing content, but man, this one really got to me. I went on to read the full synopsis and I think I made the right choice.😢
Man, Room doesn't get talked about enough. Brie Larson gave that performance her ALL. *that* scene has permanently scarred me emotionally. Unforgettable
Room is such an incredible movie. It is absolutely on of my top favorites. I think despite how intense it is (and it is very heavy and intense), I do think it shows the resilience of children and its healing power. Thanks again for your awesome videos.
For me personally I don't know if I'd use the word disturbing for Dancer in the Dark, nothing really messed up happens, but it is VERY sad. That poor woman.. really good film, though the songs are... not very well done. Not sure if that's intentional?
OMG...I watched "Once Were Warriors" when it was first released and let me tell you it was one of the most difficult films to watch but at the same time, it was one of the most realistic, brutal depictions of familial violence ever put on film. Probably one of the best movies I've seen.
One of the most disturbing and terrifying ones I have ever watched was Hostel 1 and 2. What disturbed me about it was I kept wondering if there are really people somewhere who actually are doing things like this for kicks. After watching it I looked up the possibility of it and came across an interview with a guy who claimed there are. He also claimed that a similar thing called red rooms exist on the dark web. I find the most disturbing and traumatizing movies are about things that actually do or have occurred such as Dahmer, Bundy, Men Behind the Sun, Faces of Death, and one called Grim Love about that man who put an ad in a place called the cannibal cafe.
Playground (aka Plac zabaw) from 2016 is another film based on true events that is upsetting and disturbing, similar to that of Nothing Bad Can Happen and Speak No Evil. Playground has an ending that will have you feeling gutted.
OMG! I watched Playground and to this day I can't get those last scenes out of my head. Everytime I think of it I have to grab my little boy and hold him tight. So EXTREMELY gut wrenching...
What’s even more disturbing is that movie is based on a true crime. What really happened was much worse. The boy was forced to eat paint and suck on batteries and then was hit over the head with a 25 pound iron block. His tiny body was discovered split in half, as he was run over by the train. @@marybaun3195
I saw “Once were Warriors “ in theatre and I will always remember this movie. I’ve searched for it for so many years. That movie blew me away , made me aware of a world I didn’t know, and shook me to the core, bad and good ways.
My buddy recommended me Once Were Warriors because we were talking about how Cliff Curtis and Temeura Morrison were underrated actors and he said it was really bleak. I’ll have to check it out now!
For me, once were warriors was the hardest of these to get through. Grace’s story was eerily the same as my own. I am glad for my mother and myself I am alive.
i watched lake mungo as a recommendation from one of your videos and it has since become one of my favorite horror films of all time, so i'll definitely be checking these ones as well!
Oof, yes, Once Were Warriors is incredibly disturbing, brilliant, and gut-wrenchingly heartbreaking. I watched it in film studies in university. It has stuck with me for twenty years,
I'm so glad to see you add Nothing Bad Can Happen to the list! It's one of my favorite disturbing movies ever! I was curious about the true story as well, since nothing on the internet explained it, until I baught the movie on DVD. I watched over the special features and it gives some context to the real story behind it, as well as which parts were real and which parts were embellished. It was really interesting to learn about!
thank you so much for these. too broke to actually show support beyond viewing, liking, and sharing, but even me - as a self-proclaimed horror aficionado - YOU seem to have tapped into new territory for me, so again - THANK YOU!!!
Back in High School I took Cultural Anthropology B, which was centered around Indigenous matters and my teacher had us watch Once Were Warriors. I haven't watched it since then but I vividly remember so much because of how well-made and relentless it is.
Sorry for traumatizing you, but I needed to pass it on to get it out of my head 😅. Nothing Bad Can Happen is the film that has probably affected me the most. Glad you finally watched it, but yeah it's a rough one **mild spoilers** I find it fascinating and heartbreaking Tore stays firm in his beliefs until the end. I feel like most disturbing films would have him lose his faith and descend into nilhism. But the fact that he has hope until the very end makes it hit so much harder
this is his way of coping bc once he would let go of his beliefs, he would've been caught in this nightmare of a life. I think him still believing is kind of disturbing in its own way. It's also a way to stand up for himself firmly and going against his tormentors, which is one thing that amused me. It felt like they felt inferior to him bc he was still believing in good and had a pure heart, while life treated him poorly, probably even before he met them. I think Tore is like Alyosha from The Brothers Karamazov, where he behaves the exact same way as Jesus himself. Never behaves bad towards anybody, even on people that harm them, has an unhealthy level of understanding for people's wrongdoings and is a firm believer in not just the christian version of god, but generally in the good in humanity.
I was thrilled to discover Emma’s work pre pandemic. She’s such a gem. I’m a bit older and have seen almost everything (on screen and in life!). This film will be with me forever. It’s utterly piercing, and it may be the most Catholic film I’ve ever seen - I know that sounds odd, but it uniquely captures the “mystery of the cross”. It’s a masterpiece, so thank you for bringing it to Emma. (Although when it ended, my first thought was- “well you can never ‘unsee’ that”).
I've only seen 2 out of these movies, but that last one has been on my list forever, I'll try watching it this weekend! This listing reminded me of this new movie that hasn't come out yet but had the pleasure of watching, "Stopmotion" it's devastating, and in a way, it's about leaving relationships that are draining, and left us with no freedom, but in such a twisted and dark way, and it has a lot of stop motion animation (hence the name) intertwined just like "Granny’s Dancing on the Table", thats why I feel like this would fit so well...
More to the list! I love these videos cuz you always lead me to films I never would have known of. Edit: I watched Nothing Bad Can Happen after hearing about it from your video and I can't even look at the thumbnail without wanting to cry! I'm glad I saw such a powerful film. Never watching it again tho.
Thank you for this video! I remember seeing Once were warriors in school when I was around 17, and it has stuck with me. A masterful film, but I really do not want to see it again. I´m surprised that I have missed Granny's dancing on the table since I´m Swedish. Lennart Jähkel is one of my favorite actors, so I will definitely see that one.
One of these days I will get you to watch The Painted Bird. It's seriously the most disturbing movie I've ever seen, but also one of the most beautiful. Thanks for the list Em! Room is fantastic. I'll def add Nothing Bad Can Happen to my watch list!
Always here for more trauma fodder!! Keep an eye out for the french canadian thriller ”Les chambres rouges” (AKA Red Rooms) that is currently doing the festival round. Could be a good fit for a future disturbing list. It’s about a serial killer groupie following the trial of her ”hero” who is in court for producing darkweb snuff videos. It’s a superb movie!
Hi Emma, I love these videos and thank you! If you’re open for recommendations, Horse girl is one that stood out to me as very unique, well made, very well acted (Alison Brie in the lead) and it has that feeling of dread. I think it could be something for you if you haven’t seen it yet.
Although I agree with "Nothing Bad" being heart wrenching and utterly sad, the fact that his sacrifice for that family will most assuredly involve a future that will be free of their abuser, there's real hope in that. Tore's sacrifice would always be remembered by them, maybe even taken for granted occasionally, but his faith and the hope birthed because of it, would resonate in their lives in every way. Even on their worst days. Just knowing he didn't die in vain? I think there's real joy in that thought.
Thanks for the list, Emma. I remember seeing "Room" in the theater, but the rest of the titles don't ring a bell. I remember your recommendation of "Climax" (2018) which did a number on me (disturbing but in positive way😉). I'm sure I've mentioned the panic attack I had watching "Sinister" (2012) alone and the Japanese film which got me in trouble with my best friend's wife, "Uzumaki" (2005, aka Spiral).
Have you watched In Fear yet Emma? I haven’t seen you cover it yet. It really stood out to me at the start and blew me away at the end. Highly recommended if you haven’t, and I wanna know what you think of it if you have. A deffo unsung horror gem in my book ✌️Anyone else out there wanna recommend this title?
Yes!! I was watching this one with a pounding heart, which almost never happens for me even though I watch horrors/thrillers often. It’s such a real fear and I still think of this movie a lot when I’m driving somewhere
I’m watching ‘Nothing Bad Can Happen Now’ ……😢 These people are awful human beings but the tragedy is there are so many like this in real life. I’m having a visceral anger and sadness but it is well done as a film
Watched Nothing bad can happen lastnight... thanks to your recommendation :) Incendies still holds a higher place for me because that movie left me feeling traumatised .. always.
Great list Emma! Nothing Bad Can Happen is a devastating watch, very grim. Once Were Warriors deeply impacted me when I saw it, probably because I lived through domestic violence as a teenager. I bought the Blu Ray but haven't been able to watch it since that first viewing. It's on par with Nil By Mouth, Gary Oldman's masterpiece, brutal and truly disturbed me when I saw it in the cinema. Another Blu Ray I cannot bring myself to watch.
Room WAS very disturbing…but also very beautiful. Requiem for a Dream dark, hard to watch. Lake Mungo stayed with me for days. And the French film, Cachet.
Great video as always Emma! I'm from Germany and I've never heard of Nothing Bad Can Happen / Tore Tanzt. It's not even streaming anywhere here lol. Has to be a really disturbing one
Hey Em, hope ya doing well, ya lil' rascal 😁 I have only seen 'Once Were Warriors' when it came out and I can definitely attest to that. Temuera Morrison is just a powerhouse (and against type), as is the actress who plays the mother. There was actually a half-decent sequel to that called 'What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted'. Well worth a watch 👌
Capote for me was one of the more disturbing films to date that I had seen. It is not even a horror film. It's more of drama, but the horrific situation that evolves out of the real story of Truman Capote and his relationship to a man accused of killing a Kansas family creates horrible psychological conflict. The scene when he discovers what really happened is almost as disturbing to the viewer and hard to take as it is for the character! Blood and gore may disturb in the moment, but it's only films like this that have lasting effects on you. It's the films that you cannot forget that are the most unsettling. I think it has to do with how it humanizes a type of person we probably would rather forget are still human. .
More movies I need to add to the list of disturbing movies I haven't seen. Sadly, I think I own Room on Blu Ray, but I haven't seen it. Granny's Dancing on the Table looks amazing. And on a related subject, you were SO right about When Evil Lurks. I LOVED it. Craaaaaazy movie. 😱😁
All good - great stuff, but Safe is a borderline perfect film. Swallow was kind of a psuedo-remake of it and while I liked that film, Safe has it beaten across the board. Anyone who hasn't seen it should do so.
Yeah no kidding! The only non-disturbing one he's made was The Boss of it All, a comedy that's not funny if you're not familiar with Scan culture, lol. He's my favorite director by far, but yeah...only if you like disturbing stuff!
If you e never seen Savage Streets, I would suggest it. It’s very disturbing. I saw it when I was probably 8 at a friend’s house in the mid 80’s and I still think about it. So upsetting.
Emma, you gotta Kisapmata (1981) or In Just the Wink of an Eye on that list. A pretty disturbing psychological horror/drama film from the Philippines which is also inspired by real life events.
After watching this, I decided to check out a film that I'd slung on my virtual to-watch list called 'Beaten To Death' as I do like a bit of Aussie goodness. Well, I can safely say that it most DEFINITELY counts as traumatising and disturbing. Absolutely nihilistic and extremely violent and from the first minute, it lets you know what sort of flick you're in for. Well made and watchable, but only for those with very strong stomachs and minds! It's what I call a total 'one and done'. You Aussies do NOT fuck around! 👿
I don't know why your line "You clicked on the video, you wanted it" made me think of Hellraiser line "The box. You opened it. We came."
It was a mistake! I didn't mean to click on it! You can all go to hell!
That’s what she said.

Damnnmnnn good film
There’s a scene in Nothing Bad Can Happen that I still think about from time to time especially when I see food that has expired.
Once Were Warriors is a very harrowing & disturbing film with a brutal physical & emotional ending.
Room is such an incredible movie. It is absolutely on of my top favorites. I think despite how intense it is (and it is very heavy and intense), I do think it shows the resilience of children and its healing power. Thanks again for your awesome videos.
Safe is one of my fave movies of all time. Though Dancer in the Dark is the most disturbing, IMO.
Dancer in the Dark is the only Lars Von Trier film I haven't seen...

great short list! where can we watch "granny's dancing on the table"?
All good - great stuff, but Safe is a borderline perfect film. Swallow was kind of a psuedo-remake of it and while I liked that film, Safe has it beaten across the board. Anyone who hasn't seen it should do so.
Room is sooo good! I recommend this to everyone!
🙂Fun fact: The German title for "Nothing bad can happen" is "Tore tanzt", which translates to "Tore dances/ Tore is dancing".
Omgggg 🫠
Bring it, Spooky! Bring it on!
Perhaps you can make a video about the filmography of Lars von Trier.
You have a lot of subscribers yet I never seen your channel yet. I will dive right in to this list, thank you.
I watched The Afflicted right after watching your suggestion of An American Crime. Both very disturbing but The Afflicted was much harder to watch.😊
Nocturnal Animals is so freaking sad
Safe is a classic as well very happy to own the criterion dvd of it!!
Thanx for being awesome and giving a great rundown 😊
I have to pick n choose disturbed ng. I'm allergic to some lol
Room looks disturbing and traumatic
The doctor is in the house.... "So, young lady, sit down, relax and tell me all about these memories of being traumatized..."
Jake "the Muss".... Loved the bar scene!
"BULLLLLLLLLLLLY!" 👊👊👊

Come and See (1985) is traumatising enough
You need to see Alexandra’s Project. This Australian film would fit squarely in this list. Chilling.
I’ve seen it! It’s on a different list !
I really think the innocent, forgiving boy in Nothing Bad Can Happen represented Jesus and the abusive family represented the evil of humanity
Isn't the lead male actor in once where warriors Jango Fett?
Yus!
Room was a very tough watch.
You look like a model in the thumbnail!
Just watched Dread. Its not as terrible as others mentioned, but it left me feeling gutted for some reason. Maybe some past trauma idk...
In reference to violence on women, Kiss Of The Dragon was harsh as well
It's time for your beautiful new video.! And it's great. Nice greetings from Germany!!! 👺👺👺
