  • Starting Mini Mating NUC | KODIAK FARM BEES
Adding some bees to a mini mating nuc. I want them to start drawing some comb for me, so that it'll be ready when I add a virgin queen.

    Tip :
Your better off getting the Frames drawn out with Comb in that bigger Colony. (Wire the Mini Frames within a Regular one. Then carefully remove them when all Comb is built.)
Get a lot more Bees (at least a Cups worth (x300 Bees) by Shaking x2 or x3 Frames into a Tote : all Workers fly off back home. The Nurse Bees (the ones you want !) Will stay in that Tote. Knock the Tote onto its Corner / all Bees slide into area : Scoop these up quickly and add to the Mini Mating Nuc.
Cover the Frames quickly say with a some Clear Plastic Sheeting. (Feed / Food type.)
Carefeully peel this back at the Food Reservoir and Add 1:1 Syrup or better still : Fondant And re-apply that Plastic sheet.
That way : you can Lift the Lid and take a "Peek" without all the Bees flying up at you.
These Mini Nucs can Swarm easily once that Virgin Queen has mated. So say x1 Week after her 'mating flight / returning back home' : Add that Dinky Queen Excluder Mesh over the Mini Nucs Entrance.
Also on retrieving your Mated Queen : Install a whole lot of 'new' Nurse Bees by shaking out the "old" ones in front of another Hive.
And then Restock the Mini with more Nurse Bees via a Tote Box Scoop. And adding another Queen Cell (after a few hours of being 'hopelessly Queenless') in order for those Nurse Bees to accept that 'foreign' 'Capped Queen 'Cell'.
Sorry to criticise: but do a Film for UA-cam when : 👀
    1) You know what your doing.
    2) You have the Tools to Hand
    3) Show the correct procedure and knowledge to pass onto others.
    Today's Video shows none of this. . . 😖

You have no reason to say you're sorry to criticize. You were correct. You called it as it was. I was not prepared this day. Working long hours. I did not have all the tools that I needed to have when I was doing this. It was my first time trying this. I have talked to several people. Got some good advice.. Including the advice that you have left above. I will take all into consideration and hope to do better this year.
Thank you for the great comment.

We all have our oops moments. They are what we learn from. 👍
Hope your going to have a great Bee Season.
Here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 it was the First Day of Spring (Yesterday) & yet it Snowed last night. 😖
So Beek and Bees are staying Cosy Indoors. 😎

At least you tried to do a UA-cam Video (!)
I wouldn't have any notion how to capture anything to upload. So you could certainly 'teach' me some Skills.. 🤭

I always tell people... JUST PRESS RECORD. Just because it's recorded, doesn't mean you have to upload it. Just get used to a camera being on you. Once you are comfortable with the camera, then upload. Play around and find your "comfort zone". Even our mistakes can help another beekeeper. My video included... Now someone else know how NOT to do a mini mating nuc. lol 😊
I am subbing to your channel. I HOPE to maybe see a video from you 👍
Good luck with your bee season 🐝

you could use a bigger container to shake into. I would recommend a restaurant bus tub. You can find them at restaurant supply stores.

Hey Lee I hope you succeed , I've used mine for 2 years now , I had luck the second year , I had to put nurse bees and a pheromone strip to keep them in the box, other than that they left . Once I used the pheromone strip they drew out all the frames before I put the queen cells in. Nice to see you in the bees.👍👍👍

Nice healthy colony you got there.
Good luck with the queen rearing

    Tip :
I would either mount those "Mini Frames" within a Regular Frame. Mist them with Sugar Water, and let the Bees inside the Big Colony to get them Filling them out. Then Add them to that Mini Mating Nuc.
Also. . . Each Time your Shake Bees off a Frame into a Bucket Makes a better Catching Vessel (Deep with Sides !) mist them with a little bit of Water. They then are less 'Flighty' and you will not lose all those Workers saying I'm just Flying back Home ! . . . You want "Staying" Bees, aka Nurse Bees. These are Bees on the Comb that do Hive Duty (and are not fliers yet !) Once a Flier aka a Worker, always a Flier ! . . .Just saying. 😎

Ground Zero was apparently in the Noto Penninsula... but we felt it all the way here in Nagoya, just across the island - that was the biggest, longest lasting building wiggle I'd ever felt! Stuff fell of the shelves, small pieces of furniture got knocked over... but those peeps over the other side got hit really bad...

Hope it goes well with your new queen! Nice thing you did leaving the black cloths on the hives from the deceased beekeeper. Thanks for the video!

Open the bottom for your nurse bees. Cover the hive section with film, if you have it, to add sugar water.

I figured you would want to get the younger bees off the brood to make wax faster. I don't know.

I think you aren't getting many nurse bees since you aren't shaking off of open brood. Hopefully locking them in works. Also, I'm not sure they will draw the comb without a cell. I guess we will see. I did here something that sounded like piping.

I can only thin my hives down so much. They keep making cells. They don't look like they are stressed.

It may be possible the queen is starting to fail. They might be trying to replace her. Just my opinion.

Can you do an update on the mini NUC. Did you like using it or is it a waist of time, what are your thoughts?

    • @KodiakFarmBeesLee
      @KodiakFarmBeesLee  Рік тому +1

I have been so busy working.. I've not had time to update lately. I will be getting back to videos shortly. And will update on the mini nucs. I do like them though. I would suggest a small piece of QUEEN PHEROMONE strip, until you place a virgin queen into the nuc. This will keep the worker bees in

That is how NOT to take out or put a frame back. You should have made space tsking a frame out 1 end first and slid frames across. Rolling the bees as you did is asking to piss them off.

    • @KodiakFarmBeesLee
      @KodiakFarmBeesLee  8 місяців тому

I split the frames apart, making room in the middle, to remove a frame without rolling. The reason they were more agitated, is because it was going to be dark soon. So all the field forgers were back in the hive for the night.

I'm in mine to much I think. Especially now with them making queen cells. I have got 2 splits off my double deep and the queens should be walking by tomorrow.
