Reference Points: The Rolex Daytona
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 лис 2024
- For one of the most famous models in the history of horology, the Rolex Daytona remains stubbornly misunderstood. It arrived late in the annals of the tool watch. For years - generations, even - it was a minor player, which makes its current status all the more impressive. We'll go reference by reference and year by year with the chronograph that has auto racing coursing through its springs. But to understand the Daytona, one must first understand Rolex: the maker of myths.
We did a Reference Points before where we covered the Rolex "Paul Newman" Daytona, but this time we'll be going through the non-Newman varieties.

Back to basics, and I’m loving it. Democratizing watch scholarship is what made Hodinkee great, not hype-mongering. More of this please.
Exactly ^^^
Couldn’t concur more. Tried to watch their latest “week on the wrist”, the one with the Patek Aquanaut, and I just couldn’t do it. It just sounded so pretentious and uppity
agreed
"The Daytona now is a Daytona."
That's just stellar commentary right there. Bring this robot back for more insightful commentary asap!
Now we’re talking
As a Daytona fanboy, I really appreciated this kind of content. Great job HODINKEE ❤
Finally!!!Back to what makes Hodinkee great. Take a page from Rolex, subtle changes that drive quality and stay close to your DNA. Do this and the masses will continue to follow you.
I absolutely love this reference points! Wish you guys would do more of them. It’s probably my favorite from Hodinkee besides talking watches. Well the older versions of talking watches
Stop scamming people
These 2 have sparkling personalities.
Scintillating
You see hodinkee? People dont just complain, we can also compliment when you do what we ask for
I love how nerdy it is, ‘hey here’s a word that’s slightly further away from other words’. Beautiful watch, I love the earlier simple look
A platinum Daytona is one of the least sensible purchases a person could make, yet if I won the lottery it's probably the first watch I would buy. It's so under the radar, as most people will just think it's steel, until they pick it up.
Great video.
Daytona is pretty special created the same year my dad was born and easily my favorite model.
Was able to get my first Daytona few months ago it’s the black dial ceramic
Congratulations
Where is Eric Wind ? This guy does a pretty good job of sounding like a robot, but he definitely cannot beat Eric.
Small correction regarding the ceramic models: The 116515LN did come out in 2011, followed by the 116506 in 2013, 116500LN in 2016, and then the 116518LN & 116519LN in 2017.
Thank you for an amazing episode!
I think I remember reading that the Daytona was a very hard sell for the crown in the early days. Thanks for the vid, learnt a lot.
They had to often sell them as a bundle according to someone I know who sold Rolex in the 70s on.
…the 16520 in 1988 changed the game forever
My grandfather had a white dial, zenith powere daytona. Was his only extravagant purchase that I know of. Sadly, it went to my uncle and he sold it close to 15yrs ago without telling anyone.
I am on the list for a white dial one at the AD. I am happy to wait, it's a watch I have wanted to own since he first explained how they worked to me when I was 6.
This was informative from a visual standpoint, but I'd love to see a companion piece to this video that explores the evolution of the Daytona's movement (especially now that a brand new one has entered the picture.)
Finally a great video from Hodinkee!
All "Reference Points" are excellent Hodinkee videos !
Hodinkee is back!
Flew to Rotterdam on Saturday to buy Chrono24's cheapest 116528 in Europe.
It's _abbbbbbbbbbbbbbbsolutely_ gorgeous.
My last watch!
This is great!! You should do this for the date/datejust!
Great work Hodinkee! I really enjoyed this video and I learnt a lot too. Thank you.
That 116523 exotic Blue Racing dial @24:58 is absolutely stunning. Never seen a dial quite like that one before in a Daytona, super unqiue.
That 116506 is a Masterpiece, but the one Daytona not on the table is the sublime 116519, the Daytona Beach models, in Green or Blue, those are a Dream Watch for me.
Love this format, pure knowledges
talk about geeking out on a single watch model!......thanks for the history lesson, amazing.
Now THAT is HODINKEE.
Learned a lot on this video! In the market for a new Paul Newman on the rubber strap so had to brush up on the history of these gorgeous pieces ❤
Absolutely spectacular video. Thanks for taking the time to walk us through start to finish.
the big issue is that Rolex gave up its motorsport heritage and created a "flex" watch for status seekers. When I started in motorsports, lots of drivers had REF6263 daytonas (like Newman). Today, only the D-bag posers have the new daytonas. And why should drivers wait for years on a "list" to get a tool-watch??
Guys, do you have any plans on creating a reference points video on the legendary Rolex Datejust. Come on I think it deserves it :)
Nice to se that Alexander Skarsgard has found the joy of watch collecting
6:08 I like that the history of the Daytona requires an explanation of the Speedmaster as a "failed" racing watch that became the space/moon watch.
The model I am most conflicted about in this lineup is the 50th anniversary platinum daytona. The brown bezel and subdial rings seem like a strange choice to me. I’ve always thought black would look so much better, and I’ve seen the watch in person as well. Anyone else feel the same?
I love the blue racing dial in the two tone case. It's so unique and my ultimate rolex
Agreed. I didnt even know that existed. That blue racing dial is exotic looking
@@meetseth3 yeah for some reason its very unpopular, and also its very rare. Im not a rolex fan boy and this one just really appeals to me
Fantastic run through, this explains a lot. Thank you.
Big fan of the videos that share knowledge like this, rather than only opinion
Amazing you had all those Daytona's to show us! Picture is 1000 words! Keep up the excellent work!!!!!
Back to what made Hodinkee great
WOW. All this references from the Daytona modell in a collection of one person, this would be worth more than 5 million dollars
This is really informative video, a lot of work must have gone into it!
Many iterations of the Daytona, but they all carry the same DNA! Without Paul Newman, Daytona would have never reached it’s complete hype!
Watching with my pre-ceramic 116518 on wrist. Man, I love me some Daytona ...
Man this is the most beautiful of all! Incredible daytona
I would love this about the GMT!
they did it already, two years ago. check the playlist for Reference Points
@@derosa1989 thank you
I read that the 6062 was marketed as cosmograph which makes sense with the moon phase and stars. Still confused as to why they dusted off the name for the Daytona…
Did that 116520 at 19:01 had an "APH"-dial?
More of this please! 🙌🏻
Love these! Keep em coming. Datejust🤞🏽
Please do a Reference point on the Rolex Date!
Damn I was really hoping to see the mythical “Chairman’s” dial Daytona. Gold with pale blue dial
How much does this table cost?
You can get it on Amazon for $119.99
Small correction - later versions of the 116520 came with chromalight markers. So that ref hasn’t *always* featured super luminova, as stated in the video.
Beautiful.
I agree that the 116500LN is the most iconic modern Daytona hands down. Most desirable as well. 🥲
Wow. Amazing. Well said and put
I miss this hodikee
very precious video !
Finally! Thank you!
While the Zenith era may be the most "affordable", I honestly believe it is the weakest era aesthetically. The modern Daytona is a masterclass.
"I turned the 6 upside down its a 9 now" -Drake.... or was that Rolex????
the 116505 should be on here for being the first everose daytona debuted
There are thousands of dollars of watches on that table.
Why is it always hard to find an Oyster Cosmograph with smooth pushers instead of the screw ones.
full disclosure i liked this video before even watching it. that's how good i know it's going to be
Love these.
Love this
Great episode
Never knew the Daytona could be so interesting 😏
I didn't know the McPoyle brothers were into watches. Sorry....had to.
No Daytona for me. I have never been convinced. It is a luxury piece, but it lacks the legitimate status of a Heuer, synonymous with car racing Formula One legends - Rindt, Andretti, Siffert, Ickx, Regazzoni.... It tried space, and failed. It remains a top quality luxury piece, and the Paul Newman is stunningly beautiful. But personally that legitimacy issue is a problem. The vintage ones - 1960s - are top notch, but unaffordable compared to a much more legitimate 1960s 321, or a great column wheel Heuer or UG Nina Rindt or Evil Nina. So no Daytona for me. Modern ones are just jewelry, this is for people who love luxury for the sake of luxury and that's OK.
Where do the millions in watches come from for these videos
I'd consider myself a fan of wristwatches, yet my left foot fell asleep while watching this.
That Rainbow Daytona is fuggly. I'm sorry.
This is what you would call "Dayotna Heaven"
Aw was hoping to see the eye of the tiger daytona
awesome video
5:08 Dude, nobody but you calls it the “Le Mah’” 😂
Those subdials on the Rainbow are not meteorite?
Dream watch.
They should be teaching this at school
Ooof amazing
First comment....great stuff. The icon!
cada loco con sus temas
12:18
❤❤
One of the most interesting watches to talk about and you got two of the most boring guys to talk about it 😂
8:14
Smh it’s gold crystal not gold meteorite. There are no pure gold meteorites and it doesn’t even look like a Widmanstätten pattern. I would know because I own one, besides that I liked the video.
😍
jeeeeeeeeeezzz😍
First! Much over due!!!
We’re they not allowed to touch these watches or what?
No two ways about it, the Speedmaster is cooler.
As Daytonas are beautiful, I find it kinda overrated, I also feel that the people who should only wear Daytonas are the people who won Daytona. Just my thoughts
Shiny ceramic bezels are a pest ⌚
Offset subdial layout is so ugly its weird
VALJOUX 72 for the win
other watches exist
need someone more enthusiasm, this guy put me to sleep.
And the Daytona is overrated in the Rolex lineup
white dial 16528 has fat hands. my 2 16528 watches have skinny hands. I do not think they are supposed to have fat hands
get the foo with the deep voice please
these two interesting guys have no chemestry among them, they fight the white dial like toddlers... its porcelain not white... its called porcelain but it is not porcelain... love the blonde guy... tense moment ruined the video for me.... hodinke is going down....
OMG....will you ever give up on Rolex?? Some new content already.
Rolex is the best
