These cars, the "Corolla GTS Twin Cam 16", as they were called in NA were great, and fast. I mean the original, actual meaning of fast. 135hp from 1.6litres, normally aspirated. VTEC that. The most powerful 4AGE we ever got. I drove one that was new (and just broken in) through Montana on I-90 in the day and it flew. Had it at 125 a couple of times and a nice rippy and easy cruiser at 110 for extended periods of time. Montana is a long way across. Very few cars going either direction to even look at. Fun car.

And now you've got massive barges like my 2013 Ford Fusion 2.0L Ecoboost AWD that I mod chipped to get it to boost higher and produce a whopping 305bhp and something near 370lb-ft of torque. It's fast, sure, but you'll never experience speed in it the same way you do in a 90's car. In a car that you knew, for a fact, wouldn't save you in a roll-over. In a car that has visibility for days because you were supposed to avoid crashing instead of have the car tank through it. In a car that was LIGHT because they didn't have the safety regulations that necessitated making them more powerful than they feel because they're hauling around an extra 1000lb of impact protection. A 90's car gives you a very visceral experience of speed. Having said that, I've never managed to find the top speed of my ford just yet. Not because it ran out of power, but because I hit 136mph and decided I didn't want to lose my license on the ever-populated highways around my state's capitol. But it is a stark difference from my 2003 Mercedes C320 which ran out of gearing and torque at that same speed, and a vast improvement over my 2006 Volkswagen Golf 2.0L that struggled to hit 90mph. My Fusion does feel fast at those kinds of speed, but puttering around town, it feels so unenthusiastic. That's something you don't get in 90's cars, especially RWD 90's cars with skinny tires. Even just scooting around town at 45-50, you can tax the handling and derive a feeling of speed from the car, because it just doesn't grip as hard as modern cars. It doesn't feel heavy and indestructible like modern cars. My Fusion takes turns at 45 that would be terrifying and exhilarating in a 90's car at half that speed. I can hit bendy roads at shocking speeds and my car never once threatens to understeer beyond recovery or break traction. But it does lose out in feel. It just doesn't feel as exciting as it should given how well it can perform. But, and lets face it, I'm at a point in my life where I'm acknowledging that I'm older and this is currently my only car, so I don't necessarily want every drive I take to be filled with a slight but omnipresent feeling of anxiety from a fragile old car attempting to chuck me into a ditch if I can't manage its under or over-steering in a bend. When I'm in a financial position to afford a second car, sure. I've got a list of 90's cars that I'd love to own and tinker around with, but for now, a safe and highly performant car is just my speed.

GTS came with rear discs. '88 AE92 came with last gen bigport (red/black top), TVIS gives nice midrange grunt, but swapping to the smallport makes for a more entertaining drive (and ITBs are available if you can find the correct ECU and loom from Japan/Australia).
Having 2 AE92s (Prizm GSi, Corolla GTS) and having had fast Volvos, all 3 MR2s, WRX, and a new GTi, I can offer an experienced opinion: These AE92 Corollas are FAR MORE FUN daily drivers than anything else I have owned or driven. My Prizm (with 20v blacktop) is a perfectly inconspicuous family commuter... that will HAPPILY rev to 8k rpm and sound like a symphony in doing so.
If you want to win straight-line races, find an older Corvette or Mustang; but if you want to ENJOY your drive time, get a Corolla (civic, sentra).

Its interesting how you mentioned that you look up economy car in the dictionary and it says "COROLLA". Well, in a few years, that won't be true anymore since the new 2019-2020 Corollas are anything but "economy cars". They're becoming so damn sophisticated and they aren't cheap anymore. Kids in about a decade or so will be rolling around in our current generation Kia Rios and Hyundai Accents.

Kids in about a decade won't be rolling around in Rios/Accents - there won't be any left by then. I feel like the current gen 3-banger Mitsubishi Mirage will still be around within a decade, but mostly they'll be driving worn-out shit from the late 90s to early 2000s - more modern cars aren't going to last that long.

I've had two of these Corolla's (88 and 89, respectively) and both were just shy of 'beater' status. Even still, it was reliable enough to get me through a few years, and spirited enough to put a smile on my face. It's left me with a personal bias for them, but there is an amount of red-headedness that you have to contend with in the Toyota family. The AE92 was also the last of the real performance-biased Corollas until the 00's sometime, at least for us here in the states. The 4A-GE was also a decently high-rev engine. They're getting rarer, too, and more expensive when they can be found. I paid under 3K for each of mine, and they've doubled as I've looked for them in the last decade.
tl;dr They're weird, affordable, fun, relatively easy and cheap to fix. I'd have another one. Mr. Regular, you crushed this one.

I just bought a 97 Corolla this year. Ouch.
It was $400, motor and tranny are solid, rust free, sunroof doesn't leak, interior is good, no leaks, only 170k miles on the clock, and it only burns a quart of oil every 5k miles. It needed struts and tires and the college freshman girl selling it didn't want to deal with that. So I really bought an $900 Corolla.... But I started a new job that has me commuting 70 miles a day, largely highway, and this was a much better option that my 97 Cherokee. Safer, fuel efficient, stable on the highway, and much quieter.

Great review, but the "cable shifter issue" seems really off.
One, despite the upsides of solid shifter linkages, cable linkages are used nowadays since they take up way less room, and they can just be routed anywhere. Even Honda switched to cable shifter linkages in the 90s and they still shift great. It's also a benefit with transmission swaps since one can just drill a hole in the firewall, stick two cables through, and hook up the new transmission.
Two, shifter slop and play can get just as bad on mechanical shifters as cable shifters if a linkage bushing goes bad from wear and tear. Cable shifter bushing can go bad, but there are less bushings to worry about and they can be easily replaced with brass bushings or spherical bearings (although the same can be done on mechanical shifter linkages).
Three, Toyota shifters suck. They just lack feel. It's probably from the crappy shifter box, but I've never done a short shifter box install on a Toyota before.
One upside with mechanical shifter linkages is that the shifter vibrates with the engine. I kinda find it amusing.

From my time with a Corolla XRS, a short-shifter(along with brass bushings and a set of aluminum shifter assembly bushings) did a good job of making it feel much more direct. Wouldn't mind doing that to my GT-Four at some point. :)

I used to own a 1991 AE92 Corolla Levin, didn't have the flip up head lights but same as trueno in all other respects. I did a shifter modification in mine to help correct that toyota feel. I remove the stick from the shift box and slid the pivot ball up the stick shaft as far as clearance would allow on top of the tunnel. Ball was on splined section of the stick and then I cut about an inch off the top to shorten the truck length gear stick😂 New nylon bushes and result was next level, felt firm and exact like linkage and halved the throw distance required due to longer shaft from pivot to cables. Changed the entire driving experience just doing that one mod.
