  • Four wheel steering! The rear wheels turn! In the 1980's we were living in the future! This is a Honda Prelude Si 4WS. [UPDATE] Yea, the rear wheels turn in the same direction at first. It's weird, it doesn't feel like that does anything. Yea, the car will "crabwalk" across lanes, but from the driver's perspective, it doesn't feel any different.

      Cars like this have made me realize, as a kid raised around cars with so much raw power they could launch a diff into the neighbors living room on Christmas and kill their kids, cars are not all about looks or speed. But they are about the sheer fun of them. It's not stressful to drive them. You just can.

    @briandg25ify 5 років тому +537

    DANGIT. You missed the most important part of the 4WS system: the bit you use when actually driving the car.
    The rear wheels swivel in the SAME direction as the fronts at low steering angles. That makes the car crab over more or less sideways at highway speeds, and makes for super awesome lane changes.
    You even show it in your video. Go back and do your homework, then stay after class and clean the blackboards.

    • @Kitteh2006
      @Kitteh2006 5 років тому +63

      Yeah, I don't know how Mr. Regular managed to miss this. Any amount of basic research (or literally just watching the rear wheels) would clue you in to the fact that the rear wheels are always being steered. At a certain point they change direction.

    This came up in my recommendations and now I'm just lost in the nostalgia. My first car was an 88 Prelude Si 2WS with the 5-speed manual. I didn't care that it was already 20 years old when I started driving it on my learners permit, there weren't any airbags, and the low ride was destined to decapitate me if I hit any of the farm equipment that frequented the gravel roads I grew up on. I had a fuckin stick shift and I loved it. Thanks for taking me back.

      I feel sorry that your dad was a jerk, but I can understand because when I was a kid and talk of the dodo get viper or the Honda fast cars my dad was a jerk to saying,” you could get the same speed and same gear set for less if you get a Chevy Silverado.”
      I just stopped and stared at him, didn’t say anything and was thinking in my head,” do you know how damn stupid you sound right now. Do you ?”
      But he never liked any other car that was not a Chevy masterpiece to him.
      Oh well, I still like fast Honda cars that can whoop Chevy ass in any street race from games set in Tokyo or anywhere else that was not North America, until Honda still whooped Chevy ass just because they could.
      Hope your having a better mood and understand that not everyone you talk to about cars may not like the same brand, even if they don’t get it, why this car calls to you.
      That’s fine just tell yourself this is my love and my joy, so to hell with anyone else who is just being a jerk just to be a jerk.

      His entire description of the system was...just...wrong.
      The steering wheel runs the steering shaft, the shaft runs the pinion, the pinion runs the rack and the front tie rods. The rack runs a second pinion, which runs the transfer shaft, which runs a complex eccentric gear in the rear housing which runs the rear tie rods. No driveshaft, no differential, no half shaft....
      Of course he massacred Honda’s engines of that period as well, so I guess we shouldn’t be surprised.

    AND you got ahold of a model with 4 wheel steering! yeah! Hells to the yeah!
    The 2nd and 3rd gen Preludes might not be fast off the line, but these cars stick to the road like they have been NAILED to it (Unfortunately the 1.8l ones accelerate the same way).
    Slow down for what? I can corner hard enough to break an aftermarket cupholder and watch my coffee mug sail across the car in slo-mo to explode on the passenger door!

      You've obviously never heard of the Prelude curse. You could put all the money in the world into completely overhauling every single piece of a Prelude so that its better than factory fresh, and it'll still break down on you. The only Prelude that can be considered "mint" is a show car that is trailered everywhere and never has to be reliable. Even at that, the clock cover will be broken and the seatbelt warning lights won't work.

Only had to replace a thermostat, an alternator, and the timing belt. To date, my most favorite car out of the 10 other vehicles I've owned since 2008. Still remember the VIN number by heart. Still remember the looks I'd used to get in traffic when I'd successfully pull off a U-turn on a 2 lane street!

      I had a Silverado with quadrasteer. If memory serves correctly under 10-15 mph the rears would be capable of their full travel in opposite direction of the front tires giving you the shortest turning radius. In the 15-45 mph range the degrees that the tears would turn in the opposite direction were limited. Above that mph range and into “highway” speed the rears had limited degrees of steering and changed direction to turn with the front tires. At higher speeds the truck felt extremely stable, more so in my option than a truck without 4WS. 4WS was great and I truly believe that truck was the best I have ever had in terms of ride comfort and stability. The only time 4WS wasn’t desirable to me was in slushy snow conditions as it made counter steer corrections feel unnatural.

    Man this was like 1993-94, I was born in 1984.
    My babysitter, Ms Erin had the ugliest 1980ish Honda Accord hatch she rode us around in, I know it was a late 70's/early 80's Accord because it had the 4 round headlights. Man that car was a roach, but it was reliable, 5 speed, that ugly tan, smelled like that old honda smell, hard to describe.
    Her best friend, who also babysat sometimes rode us around in her mid 80's Prelude, the gen before this one. That was straight up modern in comparison, it was a proper 2 door coupe, it was actually nice. Then we saw her brother's Prelude, an absolutely pristine 1990ish white one.
    That was really cool until he traded it in on a 1992-1994ish Lexus SC. That car kind of blew my mind at age 10, it looked like nothing I had seen before. Everything was a box, a wedge, square or round headlights, wtf was this shape??? I ended up with one of those cars about 20 years later lol, the 1st gen Lexus SC is still one of my favorite shapes.

    My nanny (mum's mum) had and still has this lovely white 91 4WS. I remember being picked up from school a few times when I was little and that's half of why I'm into Hondas. But then one day Nanny and her Prelude went away for almost no reason, and that was because my family just shattered. Being unknowing about life things at the time(I was only 7 or 8) and I just continued on subconsciously knowing that suddenly a huge part of my life was gone seemingly forever...
    Until life handed me my own keys to make ends meet again and I could find Nanny and her loyal Prelude to say hello with a broader view of the world and a 10-year overdue hug.

    I think it was a breathtakingly high price back in 1989, added to the fact that you often had to pay a lot over full sticker price to get one. That extra $1,000 markup (labeled as "market adjustment" or something like that) went straight into the dealer's pocket, above and beyond all the many other markups. On the other hand, everyone, like neighbors and friends, knew you got a high quality product. There was a snob appeal to driving this car..."I'm rich, and I drive the best..." I wanted one at the time, but I refused to pay off the arrogant dealers, and send my money (what little I had) over to Japan. I ended up buying an Altima in 93, built in Tennessee, no greedy markups, lower price, and 150 hp, high hp for the price range at the time.

    One thing you didn’t mention is that at slight steering angles, the rear wheels actually turn a tiny bit *in parallel* with the front wheels, so during lane change maneuvers, the body wouldn’t angle as much in relation to the forward direction, sort of “crabbing” or “drifting” into the next lane. You can see this in the parts of the video where the owner is demonstrating the 4WS while standing still. The rear wheels nudge slightly in the same direction as the fronts, then reverse direction.

    Happy memories! I had one of these, years ago, including the 4WS system. A dark metallic blue so dark, most people thought it was black. Boot spoiler looked brilliant! I had it lowered, so the five-spoke 17inch alloys I bought (with 'spacers') filled the wheel arches and it looked utterly amazing, the way it sat so well-planted on the road - and it felt like a go-kart! I eventually replaced it with bright red BMW 3 series with big alloys and all the BMW factory-fitted kit, and every person I knew said the Honda had looked way better and, deep inside, I knew this to be true. What a brilliant car that Prelude was, and what a poor follow-up that BMW was!

    The Darger and 4WS comparison is pretty apt. I had no idea the Prelude Si 4WS even existed. It's art for art sakes, outsider art. It's sad to me that the owner is often meet by older folks who just want to check the alignment but proof that the younger people just don't know what it is. Preludes are neat enough but, this, this is art. I want one.

    It's cool, but try my '92 Honda Prelude Si 4WS MANUAL. The only way to experience the prelude before VTEC appeared

    • @Bartonovich52
      @Bartonovich52 5 років тому +1

      Or the simple 12v 2nd gen before it started the upward spiral of bloat, price, and mostly useless feature. In the VTEC era... the Prelude you want is called the Integra GS-R.

      The 1991 Si 4WS had the B21A1 which up to that day was the largest 4cl Honda has made, made some great torque for a 4cyl, unfortunately that was also their first venture into FRM cylinder wall sleeves and the damn things are piston rings like crazy. It did however out handle most any car on the road, even newer cars. I had guys in corvettes and Porsche’s struggle to keep up with me on the twisties.

      In certain countries you could have both VTEC and 4WS. What I found weird was in Japan they stopped using thinner molding, making the Prelude a luxury car!

    • @crxdelsolsir
      @crxdelsolsir 5 років тому

      Not so but depending on where you live. In Japan where it is tight or in the city this is useful. But like yourself many want more power and the focus was just on power and this feature is not valued by those wanting power.
      But guess what, after decades European super cars are only just getting the Four Wheel Steering feature in Super Cars and expensive cars. Mercedes first 4ws is the top of the line AMG GT, Porsche is the top of the line 911 and Lamborghini Centenario. Who is behind now and looks like it was not just a Gimmick afterall.

    • @slamcrank

      oh boy, I had one of these with a manual gearbox, and believe me... it was SLOW. Fun in corners, but the lack of power on acceleration was unbearable. Also, definitely the most unreliable car I've ever owned. And just wait until the power (assist) steering went out... with 4 wheels to move... (and it will go out - once every six months. A simple $150 fix, but still). And when you need to replace the sunroof gasket because it leaks, that'll be about $400. And you should know that the alternators on these engines notoriously go out about every 10 months, usually at 4am on an interstate in the rain. My local Honda dealer still stocks them, and that should tell you a lot. Mine actually cremated itself on the side of I-85 in N. Carolina, about two days after having replaced the timing belt and buying its fourth alternator.

      The issue is you guys have to understand they have to have someone who owns the car be willing to offer them to review it. And it’s not just “hey I have an 01 prelude come review it”. It has to be somewhere close to where they are or where they will be for some reason. There are a lot of factors.

    I had one. Not very fast, at all, but still an unbelievably awesome, solid, reliable, super fun car. I miss it every single day. If I could afford any car in he world, I would find myself another pristine third gen Prelude si, then I would go get my R8. It has aged extremely well.
