    Until the UFC, the realities of empty hand fighting were completely ignored by martial arts people. To enter a fight against a D1 Wrestler with zero takedown defense would be unthinkable today...

    • @homersimpson8955
      @homersimpson8955 2 місяці тому +3

      True, because martial arts usually were good enough against untrained hooligan. But against well trained opponent it's a completely different story. Also early UFC fighters were on steroids so many book tricks simply didn't work on them due to inhuman power they had.

    • @Billy-bc8pk
      @Billy-bc8pk 2 місяці тому +2

      That's because it was rigged. Not int he sense that they told guys to take dives, but in the way the fights were organised. The Gracies made sure ALL of the best strikers were whittled out by grapplers. If you look at almost ALL of the match-ups, we never once got a proper Tae Kwon Do vs Karate, or Karate vs Kickboxing, or Kenpo vs Kickboxing, or Kenpo vs Boxing, or Jeet Kune Do vs Tang Soo Do. It was all strikers vs grapplers, so that typically if they did manage to get toward the end to fight Royce they were gassed or had no answer to Royce's skillset. It almost backfired when a super juiced up Kimo almost took Royce out during one of the first round match-ups, but he gassed near the end as Royce was grasping for anything (literally ripping out Kimo's ponytail in the process) in order to try to cinch a lock.
      When I understood how they had rigged the match-ups it really took the winds out of the UFC, especially as each iteration after like UFC 5 they kept implementing more and more rules to favour grapplers, which was complete and utter tosh in my opinion. We still never got the style-vs-style match-ups that we were all waiting for and we likely never will. Thankfully, K1 Pride provided us with many of the match-ups with different styles that we had always wanted to see.

    Must give Horenstein extreme credit to get into ring with Kerr. Visually Kerr a monster with WRESTLING CRED.
    UNFAIR? Well, IMO, MOST would like to see two fairly matched opponents of more or less equal skill. Taking nothing from Kerr, testing not prevalent nor mandated 30 years ago.
    Of course advantage would(will) go to any athlete in any sport due to enchanced capabilities.
    The huge issue of recovery between extremely rigorous workouts is KEY. Many just in awe of muscle size, etc.
    Kerr was outstanding without aids. But Tremendous with.
    Can athletes train as hard w/out? Recovery? Injury factors. Most times no.
    Alistair Overeem was a phenom. Came back down to earth. Beatings he gave out, were now doled out to him. No disrespect.
    Just like shooting a lion from 500 yards vs up close combat with just a knive. What is fair combat??
