Awesome video, saved me a couple hundred bucks! Folks think twice about basic wiring and dont think you have to buy the dealer expensive modules! Where there is a will there is a way!
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairsGreat stuff, I've got the '18 Chrysler Pacifica hopefully it's done basically the same way. Most of these videos have you running a long wire all the way to the front battery😢
I would absolutely love to find a VW pickup like you have. I keep looking for one used. If I could find one with the same diesel that my VW rabbit had and a 5 speed I would be golden!!! Use to get 55 MPG with the 4 speed. My coworker had the same with a 5 speed and was getting 60 MPG around town and 65-70 on the highway. Boy I really miss that car. I always wished I had the pickup version of it. It was a simple easy to work on vehicle.
I hope you find one! They really are great Trucks. Mine is a gas 1.8L with a highway geared 5 speed and 30+ MPG is not a problem. I owned a 1.6L NA 4 speed Diesel one for a few years and it was slow, but man that thing was a fuel saver. May I suggest you get one sooner rather than later? They are getting harder to find everyday.
@Farpoint Farms Restorations and Repairs yes any of them in PA are generally rusted out. The place I worked at, several mechanics had the VW diesels and they taught me how to tweak them to milk the mpgs out of them. I miss the simplicity of them. I had a VW bug in the mid 80's and it was one of the simplest cars I ever worked on. That being said, I have learned quite a bit from your videos on the bug and the bus.
Nice video. Appreciate your delivery and pace. I would recommend disconnecting the battery when making any electrical changes to a vehicle, especially when splicing into existing wiring. While low voltage is rarely a risk to you, there is a potential to cause an issue with the electrical system of the vehicle.
Agree. Always disconnect the negative on the battery when working on electrical components. That being said the scotch connectors he used to "splice" aren't the traditional method and when paired with the led identification tool that came with his kit it's a safe and fool proof installation. Quality and how long it will last is another question. I'm just going to buy the OEM plugs and wire them in myself. Trailer plugs are abused and need to be rough, I'm sure by now he is no longer using zip ties to hold the connector 😂
Great video! This is what I have been looking for. Do you have a link to the kit that you bought? If not, what is the manufacturer and model number? I wish there was a "zoom and enhance" feature to see how you applied the scotch locks. Some of the other harnesses for newer vehicles cost upwards of $100 and require you to connect directly to the battery. Is either way better? Thanks!
@nathandeo4977 I still have not installed the harness for trailer lights on my new vehicle. Installing the hitch was was relatively easy, but the harness will be quite involved. I wish I could just tap into the power in the outlet in the back of the vehicle.
I have a 7-pin on the motorhome, to 4-wire on the toad, alls good. Lately the lights on the toad are intermittent so I'm thinking loose connections with those pesky "wire taps". In fact the lights were OK after the last fix and re-clamping the wire taps seemed to work. Now one light is in-op, so I believe it's the wire tap in again. Instead of reclamping, is soldering the connection OK? I have a background with soldering and circuits. Thanks
I watched your video from about a year ago and I really liked your explanation and your style. I would like to know where you got the trailer wiring harness kit you described.
I need to do this for my 78 F250. It actually has a gooseneck plug in the bed for a gooseneck trailer. I just need a plug for when I haul a bumber hitch.
does it have to be hooked up on the drivers side tail lite or can i hook it up on the passenger side ,because my driverside tail lifgt is glued together due to an accident
I am confused I have the left /right turn signal and ground connections down, but on the tail/brake light you made separate connections so that makes five wires instead of 4 can you clarify this for me. where did the extra connection wire come from? I an wiring up a metric cruiser motorcycle I have a wiring diagram but still just 4 wires not 5.
So there are trailer light kits for cars that have combo brake and taillights, and ones for cars like this that have a separate light for each. Make sure you have the right kit!
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs Actually there are not cars with combo brake and taillights. There are old cars that have combo turn and brake lights, meaning they use the same filament for both functions. There are cars that have the brake light and tail light in the same bulb but on different filaments. This cars still qualify as having separate brake and taillight functions.

It should be much the same.
Will that same tail light harness fit a 2018 GLC AMG 43?
If it has a brake light that is separate from the turn signal, then yes,

2018 nissan titan uses the same lightbulb for turn signal and brake and regular taillights
Oh, that is good to know- Thanks

Which wire did you connect to the park wire? You didn't actually say. And how is this a 4 pin plug when you have 5 wires?
That is what the converter box is for. It converts the far more common 5 bulb setup on modern cars to the 4 pin setup of nearly all small trailers.
Did you split the harness and send set of wires to the right and one to the left? Is blinker wire on right the same color as on the left?
Yes, and yes.
