Trailer Lights Not Working? How to Diagnose Trailer Wiring on Your Car or Truck!

Did you recently connect a trailer to your car or truck, but the trailer lights don't seem to light up? There are several reasons why that might be! Trailer hitches should have a plug or wiring harness where you can connect the trailer, so that brake lights, reverse lights, and turn signals light up on the trailer at the same time as your vehicle. Depending on the configuration of your vehicle and trailer, there are many possible points of failure. In this video, Andy guides you through a step by step diagnosis of the trailer wiring. In our case, the problem was missing fuses and relays. It's also possible that corroded conductors at the plug, or corroded or broken wiring could also be a problem. The best way to find out is a step by step methodical diagnostic process!

I was banging my head on the wall trying to figure out why my trailer lights stopped working. I checked the fuses etc. I wasn't aware of the plug in the back of the adapter until your video. That was the issue! Saved me a trip to the dealership, thank you!
I would recommend staying on the ground pin for your test light ground connection for all diagnostic tests because that is what the trailer is going to be using. Otherwise you might miss a gremlin.

What’s going on with Buick that they install a plug but make powering it up an option?!? That’s nothing less than pathetic! Never heard of such a thing!
Thoughtful and accurate , in terms of trouble shooting, video. My issue is that all of my trailer lights were working, but now none are working but fore the turn signals and brake lights.

If I was to buy jdm headlights and a jdm front bumper, can the fog light housing shape be changed to a diffrent style/shape/housing on the front bumper so it fits into the new jdm front bumper?

Probably a dumb question but this is my first time wiring a trailer should I ground every light where the light is or should I run a white ground wire across the entire trailer to every single accessory?

Sorry but I was hoping to learn something new here. My brand new pigtail isn't working and I already replaced the fuses and relays so this didn't help me at all.
I have the same problem with my 2012 F-250. The 7 round pin connector has no power to it. I removed the connector and still nothing. Now I am tracing the fuses and relays to the two fuse boxes. One at the engine hood and another at the passenger side (the trailer fuses on this box are all good). The ones under the hood I am still working on it. I need tools to pull those out LOL
Having a problem with just the brake light... changed fuse, tested ohms, cleaned the connectors... the box inside the car is the same. Rewired it 3 times... suggestions?
I have a 2005 Yukon and I have no right turn signal in my trailer hookup there is no power on the right side turn signal, I have turn signals in the vehicle but not in the trailer hookup as I said I have no power in the right side on the trailer hookup can anyone tell me what the problem could be, thank you

I checked everything else first and no luck. Then I checked the truck trailer light fuse. Bingo

I re-did my trailer wiring. When I connect the 7 pin to the trailer all works fine- but when I go to actually hook up the trailer- as soon as the ball touches the hitch it blows my left turn signal fuse (assuming left turn signal is on)

Why not start with the fuses. An electrician would always start with the fuse (the beginning of the circuit) and work out, not start at the end of the circuit.

i rewired my new carryon trailer lights didnt work well i bought a light tester and all lights after i turned on my lights lit up. jacked it back off the trailer ball. the ball itself was rusty, i thought hmmmmmmm not a good ground so i took a wire brush\
cleanedup the trailer ball squirted some wd 40 0n it and bingo! lights all came on. reason to rewire it? well seems my 3 goats got out and thought they needed to play on it chewed all my wires.
Test light wire clamps are not strong and reliable . Clamp a set of small locking Vise Grips onto a good ground then clamp your tester’s clamp to it . 5/14/23

Terrible example . You need to have something on say the lights , blinker, or brakes to indicate on the appropriate pin. You had the brake on so the only pin that should indicate or light the tester is the brake pin and none of the others. You can go around all the pins a million times but the only ones that will indicate or have power are the ones that are ON ! By chance someone may have wired it wrong and one of the other pins could light but not ALL the other pins, only one pin. You need to be CRYSTAL CLEAR .
Get them fixed, or you're regular turn signals won't work. 😆
