Man, if I had a nickel for every time Thanos had become omnipotent and destroyed the universe.. I´d have Five nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened five times.
I have 5 nickles, and I'm unaware of the meaning or ramifications behind my owning of said nickles, but if I had no nickles then it would probably be cause there wasn't anything and that he had won.
I will say I think there is a bit of context missing for this run. Before Cates took over Jeff Lemuire did an amazing 12 issue run on Thanos, involving Thane and Starfox and Thanos facing mortality. This is technically a sequel to the Lemire run Did love the episode though. I really loved this when it came out, really announced Cates in Marvel. He did this and Doc Strange at the same time, these being his first marvel books.
Wow, looking back at this book, every character in it is someone Donny Cates has written or is currently writing a solo series for. Silver Surfer, Hulk, Mjolnir and the Galactus skull throne for the Thor connection, it's amazing there's no Venom references to be seen.
Well this was the first appearance of Silver Surfer Black, which kinda implies “Silver Surfer Black” happened maybe, so he met Knull… so loose connection to Venom I guess
I sure hope Donny watches these videos!! I bet Chip and Scott Snyder ain't the only creators who've taken some time to check 'em out, haha. Tom King included.
Yeah as a Thanos fan this honestly wasn't my favourite story tbh, there are parts I like, but him forgetting Adam Warlock who literally is his only friend/frenemy? And been with him through most of his stories and sorta acting as an alternate point of view and conscience. Also I kinda thought it was interesting reading the early Thanos stuff where he was a nihilist that I felt was obsessed with Death, because he felt reality just wasn't worth living. In a way I think his obsession with Death was because of his lack of love in his life and also from his nihilistic conclusions, its why I liked his and Warlocks conversations in Starlin's stories because him getting over Death was when I enjoyed the character way more then the last decade where they keep having him reinforcing it as his only reason for existence and creating a dumb church. I just find it, retroactively degrading the characters growth since Infinity War. This was Jeffery Dahmer Thanos that Aaron had established in Thanos Rising. And as crazy as Starlin's OGN that is pretty much the same story as this, I prefer it, but tbh they both suck lol.
Holy shit, that ending is amazing! Thanos wins, not by killing, gaining power, changing reality or anything like that, he finally wins... against Death. Standing in front of her, knowing that this will be the end of his pursuit, just one last thing to do, he chooses that she isn't worth it. No matter how deeply engrained his obsession over Death was even from the moment of his birth, the life he lived in pursuit of her made him into a person that actually cares about some other things; his own pride, most of all. Begging someone to bring him to Death? Not worth it. In essence, this makes Thanos now obsessed with Death, but knowing that there is no way that the person he has become would ever choose to pursue the path to her. Unless some other writer just ignores all that, or interprets it differently of course.
That is how Thanos wins. Not against the heroes, not against the universe, not even against Death. Thanos' ultimate victory is when he triumphs over his own obsession. His own pride. Thanos has freed himself from the prison of inevitability. And now, there is nothing left to stand in his way. Damn, that's surprisingly thematically resonant for a book like this. Well played, Cates.
Except he already did this at the end of Infinity War, he rejects Death and got over her without power. So this isn't the first time he has rejected Death, I also believe in Lemire's run he did.
@@sergioruiz733 I should clarify: he's not technically an Eternal. His parents were Eternals, but he was born a Deviant; however, in the recent Eternals comic series (which you should read by the way, it goes so much harder than it needs to, and it's amazing) he basically hijacked the Eternals' resurrection machine to make himself immortal. And also give him prime authority over Eternal society. So, there's that.
I swear it’s been 20 years of Galactus just being the biggest Jobber in Marvel. Need to establish a big threat? Just have said threat beat the hell out of the big G. God, even when he was turned into the “life bringer” by Ewing, he was still a Jobber.
can't what for Beta Ray Bill that was one of the best comic of this Character it going to be awesome because it you guys you always make it fun and awesome
38:58 thats similiar to a ben 10 character named prof paradox who got stuck in a time warp for so lomg he got bored of being insane and learnt how to control time under his own power

Can confirm. The cosmic ghost rider figure from Marvel legends is pretty sweet. I got it on sale. Which is what lead me to read this comic. And was my intro to donny cates.
I like Back Issues on Marvel. I'm a DC guy, so I have no real attachment to any of these characters or the universe and therefore can sit back and watch the fireworks.
Funny thing is, the “Thanos Wins” future still exists, at least in Donny Cates’ stories. Spoiler Alert for Cates’ Guardians of the Galaxy run: King Thanos shows up at the final issue, but he’s wearing a hooded robe. Almost like he’s become Death. And going by recent issues, Donny Cates intends to keep this “Thanos Wins” storyline alive in his Thor run.

This book isn't great, but I'd be lying if I said that I didn't have fun reading it. I guess I can say the same thing about most Donny Cates Marvel work.
I know the guys are only having fun, but Thanos turning away from Death is the one legitimately healthy thing he’s ever done. We’re not talking about Jim Starlin’s Mistress Death here. This is Jason Aaron’s Mistress Death who loves mass murder and genocide. Ever since Thanos Rising, Death has been this insidious cosmic being responsible for making Thanos into the villain he is. She’s been manipulating him, egging him on to kill people his entire life for her, and thanks to Donny Cates, even gave him his name. Technically, Mistress Death is now one of the most evil beings in the Marvel Universe.

As well the amount of times he's beaten or unmade a future version of himself... "How Many Times Do I Have To Teach You This Lesson Old Man?!"
Honestly 5 is a lot
Nice Doofenshmirtz reference
That is kinda weird.

“I’m starting a Thanos farm.”

Between this and Devourer King, Galactus just can't catch a break. His helmet is reduced to furniture

Doing multiple Donny Cates books back to back really highlights how Donny Cates has like 6 ideas that he just re-names and uses again and again.
Welcome to reading tsutomi nihei
54:14-54:33 GENIUS!!!😆
I found this trade years ago at a freaking Costco for like 9 bucks. Great buy
Nice!
55:27 I love how bleak than line from Ethan is.
Galactus just can't catch a break, always treated like some jobber to the stars.
This had all the feels of a classic/throwback episode, great job guys!
BLESS THE GODS another ComicPop episode today. You guys are my daily comic fix
Yessss! comic pop is covering thanos wins. I wish I could request thanos quest.
Cant wait for Zdarsky month. Zdarch!
Lousy Zdarch weather…

Donny cates has shown that not only vox from "death of inhumans" is allergic to hammers to the face but so is the silver surfer lol
Well, if anything, we're going to have to remind them about March Waid and Scottober when those months come back around.
