I had just listened to the whole run, almost 10 hrs on the Comics Explained channel. It is a story that'll keep you on the edge of the seat definitely, the suspense is insane.

It's a truly outstanding event. I've got a feeling that people who claim it's utter garbage NEVER read any of it, nor Hickman's FF + Avengers runs. Sucks to be them lol.

I mean the run it's good not the event, needed more introduction and exploration IMHO... It needs to be able to stand on its own... Can't just say "no you have to read 5 years of a run if not more to understand it"

Hickman's a master planner and brilliant in writing egomaniacs, epic moments/one liners. Reading his Namor, Dr. Doom, and Magneto dialogues are a delight.
I can't imagine how many papers are pinned to his wall whenever he writes.

People often forget how all of this began not with his F4 run but with Secret Warriors and S.H.I.E.L.D. dude's macro narrative was truly a once in a lifetime accomplishment in mainstream comics.

I've read Secret Wars twice now. The first time I read it was when it first came out and I enjoyed it even though I was totally lost because I hadn't read any of Hickman's FF, Avengers, or New Avengers. The second time I read it was about a year or so ago after having went back and read all of the setup books, and I not only enjoyed it more but also have a new appreciation for it. For me Secret Wars is the perfect event book. Years of well-written setup over multiple titles all culminating in an awesome and epic event with even more awesome and epic art. A true chefs kiss. This conversation made me wanna read it all again.

secret wars 2015 was a interesting story and personally for me I just wish really wished secret wars 2015 pulled the trigger and let this event be a huge reboot to the marvel universe because that would've been really awesome and tons of fun but knowing marvel they didn't pull that trigger but did the exact opposite which sucks in my opinion, because part of me really wanted Spider-Man Peter parker and Mary jane to finally have there marriage return yes but also a bonus have their daughter Annie may parker alive and kicking in the mainstream marvel universe because that would've been fantastic at least in my opinion.

  • @Alistair3900

Great talk! One of the most interesting aspects of the immediately pre-event stories is that Hickman's Avengers had a big 6 month time-jump which was the excuse to merge the plots of both his Avengers books into one consistent story right up until SW. The issue (presumably) was making this fit with other Marvel books. Like 5 series got the ''last days' branding for their final arcs, but a bunch of other stories just didn't touch the buildup at all.
On that point, I wonder if a more general discussion about the use of artificial time jumps in comics would be a good episode? Every couple years one of the publishers tries it in order to make new status quos, and it mostly doesn't work. The only one I'd say had a positive impact was the year gap post-Infinite Crisis because it gave us 52 and gave some distance from the nightmare that was DC's 2005-6 events

This is Marvel's equivalent of a crisis event - and Hickman paid homage to all the crisis events throughout his avengers run.
May it be "crisis on infinite earths" with the multi verse getting destroyed, or "identity crisis" with the heroes erasing the memory of one of their own to hide the shady stuff they did, and "infinite crisis" with the fallout of such memory wipe and "final crisis", with the avengers becoming god tier and elements like the rogue planet fired from the past, etc.

Absolutely loved this event. I'll always have such nostalgia for it, and how bold it was. Always remember me and my friends gushing over how insane the tie-ins were, how crazy it was to cancel the whole line to sell the premise of BATTLEWORLD. Such a big part of why I'm still the comics fan I am today.

In response to your comment about how Marvel went through a bit of a lull after the event, I completely agree. I haven’t really read comics regularly since then. Oh I’ve come back for certain books or things that resonated with me such as Marvel: Two in one or Spider-Man Life Story but I think Secret Wars was an excellent jumping off point. I didn’t intend to leave, but in the end I think it was a good place to give up on continuity and focus on really good stories and runs.

And what’s really cool is that Hickman seems to be bringing the Ultimate Universe back with this new story called Ultimate Invasion seriously I’m really excited for this one because he’s not only most likely bringing the universe back but he’s also writing The Maker which is great cause he writes that character so damn good and he’s bringing the Illuminati back into the fold as well what’s really crazy is that we haven’t seen the Illuminati since Hickman’s New Avengers run so it makes even cooler

I've got a bad feeling this is going to send me Donna Hickman / Secret Wars rabbit hole.
A few months ago I bought the whole Tom King run for Batman in a big comixology sale. For whatever reason I decided that before I read that I should re-read Snyder's Batman. Then I decided first session read his pre-new 52 Batman stuff, then all the times for night of the owls and death of the family. Then I decided I wanted to read New 52 Batman and Robin alongside it. Of course that meant that after a few volumes to that I needed to read Batman Inc. Then Batman Eternal... I've also ended up reading Talon and Nightwing and I'm pretty sure I'm going to be reading Batgirl... Basically the whole thing has been a chain reaction of me enjoying a story and seeing references or story beats from other books and going well I should read that too I still haven't gotten to the book that I bought that started all this craziness. After reading Batman Inc. and Batman and Robin I really want to go back further and read Morrison's Batman again to which would have been a logical place to start all this if I'd known how out of hand I was going to let it get, so maybe I'll jump back into Hickman's Marvel and wherever else that leads me through Secret Wars after I'm able to read all the Batman family reading I've assigned myself. Because I think after so much DC and bat family that'll be a good change of pace and I dare not try to read both at once because as you can see I obviously have no ability to set limits and say no I can just skip that lol.

Yeah, the weird Iron-man helicopter flying villain Thanos was true, but the Thanos everyone remembers was the one from The Infinity Gauntlet 11 years after Mongul, and 6 years after 'For the Man Who Has Everything", where I think the Thanos everyone is thinking of was copied from. See Justice League Unlimited episodes Season 1 Episode 2 'For the Man Who Has Everything" it's really good @@Shift_Salt

I think the last great Marvel story. nothing and I mean nothing even lights a candle to what 2015 secret wars did, it started the multiversal madness that's inspiring the mcu current saga (for better or for worse). It was so impactful that everything seems mundane or down hill because right after that... we had Civil War 2, which was a dumpster fire. (in my opinion). But it's clear that marvel is suffering the Death metal/ doomsday clock effect which is that they threw all their good/exciting ideas into one basket and now they're stuck with the table scraps. The only exception I can think of is X-men but that's a whole bible and a half to even get into now.
