I feel like this is the story where Daredevil tries to help and ends up slamming into the invisible forcefield and falling down. John Byrne had a couple invisible forcefields so I might be confusing it with the story where Annihilus took over the Baxter Building.
There is a story where dare devil is swinging around newyork and he crosses paths with spider Man who is doing the same. Daredevil ask Spiderman about these strange levitating crosses that have appeared all over new York, flying above the streets. Daredevil.cant see what they are but can see their shape via sonar vision. Spider Man essentially says to him "I forgot you can't see, the big bad villian killed and crucified almost every avenger and stuck them in floating glass boxes in the shape of crosses." And daredevil is like "oh.."
You guys touched on the John Byrne/Chris Claremont rivalry, but the story is way crazier than that. The whole trial of Reed Richards is exactly because of their petty fights back and forth. When John Byrne saved Galactus, Claremont was pissed off because he had to kill of Jean Grey for killing only one planet. So he took time out of his X-Men comic to have Lilandra go to Reed Richards and tell him that any deaths caused by Galactus were on his hands. John Byrne, on the other hand, was having none of Claremont's shit, so he wrote this entire story as a response to say that Reed Richards was absolutely justified in what he did and fuck you Chris Claremont for thinking otherwise. It's also why the Inhumans are on the Blue Area of the moon. That's the place of Jean Grey/Phoenix's death, so he literally had the Inhumans move their city to the moon and crush that location under their buildings.

I agree with Sal, they should just have a consistent Fantastic Four run always. They represent some of the best parts of Marvel, showcasing things like actual human problems for the heroes, having crazy cosmic storylines, and they basically issued in the interconnected world of Marvel.
Doctor Doom first used that mind transference trick in Fantastic Four #10 of the original series. He did it so he could take over Reed's body and destroy the team from within. FF #10 also features cameos from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. They were used just like the way Byrne used himself in the Trial of Reed Richards issue. Crazy!
The Fantastic Four have quickly becoming my absolute favorite marvel creation and it sucks that my generation (I’m 18) don’t appreciate them and their importance. Everyone should read the Stan and Jack run.
I'm 16 and have only learned to appreciate them because of ComicPOP. I used to avidly hate the Fantastic Four, because like everyone else I saw the movies (which are all terrible) and then formed my opinion from that and the little bit of extra knowledge i had, but they truly do represent Marvel.
My best college advice is never skip a meal to study. Once hunger sets in its impossible to study. Even if it’s small make sure you eat before you study or while.
Totally agree with you about the FF. Growing up in the 70's they were always my top pick each month, even though the 70s didn't always have the best output for FF storylines. Just picking up this week the FF Hickman Complete TPB Vol 1 as I never picked up the Omnibuses. Keep hearing good things about that run. Would like to hear you guys comment about that run if you haven't already. Sure hope Disney/Marvel does the future FF movie justice with a Doctor Doom that actually rules Latveria and correlates with the comics this time. Hope Kevin Feige manages that transition too.
I have the original floppies mouldering in a box in my attic. Still love Byrnes run on the FF for its sheer sense of the epic that truly encapsulates the essence of the Fantastic Four. He was criticised at the time for not introducing a single brand new original antagonist for his entire run, but I see that as a strength. To make interesting stories that take things in new directions whilst using stale old characters is what writing is all about.
at 19:20 they predicted Mark Waid's run on Dr. Strange where Galactus ends up in the dark dimension, though if I remember correctly Tiff didn't enjoy Waid's Strange run nearly as much as that pitch would make you think
John Byrne's work in the '80s was amazing. He did great stuff with the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight- everything. I really wanted to love his work when he returned to marvel in the '90s but his work just felt tired by that time.
That rant about the microwave reminds me of a scene from Blankman where the main character is asked to fix a toaster and he turns it into an all in one breakfast machine
Proud to say I own all of these floppies. It's an *amazing* tale and I agree with Sal. It's Marvel at it's most Marvel. I also appreciated the nod to Assistant Editors Month comics. Want to see Beast and Wonder Man on the Dave Letterman Show? It's out there!
That was one of my two favorite Assistant Editors Month stories, the other being Marvel Teamup, with Aunt May & Franklin Richards. Aunt May becomes herald of Galactus & Franklin introduces him to Twinkies, which he finds he likes more than planets (it was basically a book length parody of the old Hostess ads in Marvel Comics in the 70s)
I love those classic John Byrne Fantastic Four. The panels where Terrax blasts Dr Doom and then Doom is left standing paralysed in his armour as a huge fire ball descends onto him are still etched in to my memory from childhood.
I just love that this is not the first time someone has referenced "whalers on the moon" only to have Sal immediately shut it down on back issues. Great episode!!!
My Grandpa gave me this exact story. I was 6 or 7 when we Read it together. The ending of that chick's story was so great. XD “Hey Johnny, now I'm not afraid of my powers anymore and Galactus will make me his new herald. Was nice meeting you, I'm off!“ So casual and badass. Terrax's Axe is nice too, though.
These were the very first comics I read at are 5-6, and they blew my mind at the time. Byrne and Starling were so good at making the bigger universe feel weird and interesting and alive. Now that we're ll adults and jaded we can see the warts, but this still has plenty of magic.
Like how they did the first story in an episode of the '94 FF cartoon. That and the part where they explain how Galactus' form looks different to other species. Read that when I was younger. Mind blown.
The moment in life when for the first time I actually identify with the human torch. " he thought they were going to get married but to her it was really just a flame.”
12:29 Maybe Dr. Doom just wants some help from the FF, too. That's why he's always so upset about being unable to defeat them. A regular human can't handle the Power Cosmic, but Frankie's stepdad dropped kerosene on her, so she can take it! Have Donald Blake and Dr. Strange ever discussed medicine?
Old school thumbnail is so jarring now XD. See a couple of people wishing you congrats on 70k so I’ll just assume UA-cam is slow. Congrats guys! More than anyone on this platform you deserve it!
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby first came up with that Marvel Comics exists in their own comics. Reed licensed the Fantastic Four to Marvel and lets them tell their stories for licensing fees.

19:26 Its like that episode of the fantastic 4 show were Ghost Rider shows up and uses his penance stare on Galactus and then leaves.
I cant believe Dr Strange is the one who does it in the comic.
New thumbnails, new intro, a fantastic four book....In jason mamoa´s voice: I dig it
I thought I'd never see the old fashion thumbnails again! 😭😭😭 I really dig the intro graphics!
Tiffany's silent reactions to the more atrocious plot points is just the best part of this.

I think we all prefer Tiffany ALIVE!!! Jeans best thing about her is she dies over and over again.
Perhaps she would be better suited as Mary Jane instead?
