- How does a full frame camera stack up against a medium format camera? In this video we compare the image quality of two amazing cameras. We also look at the ISO performance and dynamic range of a full frame camera versus a medium format camera. We compare some side by side images in Lightroom and I give my thoughts on how these two cameras perform.

Nice comparison, thanks for not condemning the Fuji out of hand for the age of the sensor or the speed of the focus, it is a different beast being a medium format camera. I am very impressed with the sensor and the glass! I switched from a Canon 5DSR with the very best glass I could get and the Fuji bettered it in every way. I am a fulltime Landscape Photographer for 40 some odd years and I think I have found the last camera I will ever own. :) I am getting kind of old.😆😂
I am with you brother, at 70 yo and the GFX 50sii will be my last
Thanks for the test. I own both of these cameras but my Fuji is the 100 S model. Thx for your work!.
Hey man thanks for doing this comparison. I really has helped give me some perspective 🤓
You’re welcome, glad it was helpful!
It's not all about just the megapixels only.
Image quality is also determined by the size of the imaging sensor.
All other things being equal ...
a camera with a larger image sensor has better image quality. It's physics.
Thank you, nice review
So small difference on good exposed photos. I'm very impressed how good GF zoom works. And very impressed how well both handles iso3200.
In case I have enough money I'd buy GFX - It's a little bit better than a full frame on a sensor and GF lenses works so good (even zoom lenses)
Thank you for your work!
I agree - not a ton of difference but there's something about the fuji experience that makes up for the slow focus, long evf blackout between exposures, weight and clunkiness.
I plan to use adapted Zeiss ZE lenses. How does this compare to the canon R5 or Leica SL2 in terms of sharpness and color rendering? Anyone?
I’ve sort of had a Jones for the Hasselblad x1d2, but without image stabilization, I don’t feel it’s as good as this Fuji.
Nicely done comparison. I have the Hasselblad X1D Mark 2 which has the same sensor as the Fuji. I can honestly say it's in the large prints where the Fuji and Hasselblad outshine the Nikon Z7/2. A computer screen comparison shows the differences but with the prints it's a next level difference.
Interesting. You mentioned large prints… Is there a specific print size where you’ve really noticed the differences?
@@ZJMichaels yes 20x30 and larger the larger pixels pay off with large prints. Think of it in the same way you did when you zoomed in at the beginning of your video. When you print large you kind of "stretch" the image and larger pixels make better prints. The tonality and color transitions have great fidelity. Most people don't do this. I personally just enjoy using the Hasselblad its a joy to shoot with. Most reviews point out the slow focus and what the camera costs. I'm about to make a print that will be approx. 6 feet by 5 feet for my living room. This is the wow factor with either the Fuji OR Hasselblad. That said the Nikon Z7 will still be able to do that but you will see the differences more. I use a Z6 I like the 24MP file size for just everyday shots except for the sub par AF it's an excellent camera in all other aspects for a hobbyist. As a side note I have the 80mm F1.9 Hasselblad XCD lens. It is just outstanding in every way. Fuji has an 80mm F1.7 thats almost as nice much less expensive
@@walkingmeditation61 Thanks for the info! I bet the 6ft x 5ft print will be amazing!
@@walkingmeditation61 Any chance you could show post a pic of the big print? Would LOVE to see what that scale of an image looks like on a living room wall. Want to do the same was well of monsoon storm images here in Arizona, but the files are from a D800e so I'm not thinking they'll hold up as well as I'd like but I've always wanted to see what huge prints look like in a house. :) Also....who do you use for printing that big?
Thanks a lot, very interesting
You are welcome!
I’ve noticed more of a difference when shooting portraits on a sunny day. The face has more detail and kind of pops more when used the Hasselblad X1Dii.
What was fujifilm simulation ? Thanks
ZJ, NICE VIDEO. Question: doesn't bigger sensors mean better image quality? Thank you for you video!!
Hey Garfield, thanks! Generally speaking, larger sensors will have better image quality, dynamic range and noise performance than smaller sensors... but really depends on the specific cameras and lenses being compared
Interesting, and fun comparison. Thank you! I think you nailed the overall outcome. I have owned and shot a Z7II for over 2 years now. So, obviously I have a dog in this fight. I do aspire to own a MF camera, but not to replace the Z7II. None of the 50MP MF cameras are a large enough leap in image quality but, the 100MP MF cameras are. I’m hoping Hasselblad releases an updated X2D with better, and continuous AF. Anyway, I have not directly compared the Z7II’s uncompressed raw files against any medium format camera. However, I am often still impressed, and wowed by the images that come off its sensor. Especially at base ISO. These comparos are interesting, and fun but it’s ultimately a bit unfair to pit a FF against MF. MF = Larger sensor, larger photo sites, more light gathering capabilities, resulting in lower noise, plus 16 bit color in the Fuji vs. 14 bit colors from the Nikon. In the FF realm, I think the Z7II’s image quality is up there with the best when you nail the shot. The sensor in it is a gem. Also, given the different formats, it’s an impressive feat that the Z7II comes as close as it does to MF especially at the cost differential. Thanks again for the entertaining video.
I guess the big question is, do you feel that the difference justifies the price? besides the ~$1k difference for the bodies the native glass for the Nikon covers a much wider range of prices despite still being a not-fully-mature ecosystem.
I personally think the Nikon system is better bang for the buck, but both systems are competitively priced for what they offer
AWSOME VIDEO. Would youmind to do the same with GFX100S vs Z8 or Z9 please?
I'd totally do that if I can get both cameras in my possession at the same time
@@ZJMichaels btw. Thx for all your videos. They are really 👍
Thanks Philippe, much appreciated!
50S II all day.
I would have thought that the biggest issue comparing images on 50MP sensors is the quality of the glass on each
Quality of glass definitely plays a big role and results can vary depending on the glass used
Thanks. I think you just saved me $3200. I’ve been realizing that the step up from 35mm format to GFX format (1.26x) is less than from APS-C to 35mm format (1.53x). And the quality difference may be less than that. I borrowed a 50SII and didn’t magically produce dramatically better images, though almost all Fujis have better handling than any Nikon, Canon, or Sony I’ve used. Most people will probably get more out of one really high-quality lens for their full-frame system than from a switch to GFX.
At 6:30 minutes into this video (this is the Video I've been looking for) this biggest difference seems to be the white balance of the Fuji leans to the cooler side (I prefer the Nikon) but the sharpness and contrast are better on the Fuji. I assume you can shift the white balance in the Fuji in the shooting menu? I have a D850 so I assume the results would be about the same?
Edit after the video.
It is clear to me that the GFX50sII is a great camera but having the D850 already it makes no sense the get the Fuji. On the other hand, stepping up the the 100sii might make sense, what do you think?
I think a 100MP GFX camera would definitely be a step up in image quality, but the D850 produces fantastic image quality already, so not sure if the bump in image quality would be worth the cost to you or not. Maybe you could rent the GFX and try it out for yourself... see firsthand if you think it's the camera for you. There's also considerations of the lens lineup. For example, I personally love shooting with a 100-400mm lens sometimes and nothing like that exists for the GFX system at this point in time.
It was interesting to look at the clouds in your images. It seemed that the Fuji produced a lot more detailed contrast than the Nikon. I can only get this level of contrast out of my 5DSR using HDR. It was also interesting to see the improvement of the Nikon when a prime lens was used. I wonder how much difference it would have made to the GFX50 if a prime lens was used. According to DXOMARK lens database there doesn’t seem to be any 35mm lenses that can take the full advantage of 50 MP sensors and thus one of the reasons to change the larger formats as lens design becomes less critical.
Yeah I wish i would have had a prime lens for the GFX at the time because that Nikon prime lens definitely provided a noticeable difference. I suspect a prime on the GFX would have provided a nice bump in quality as well...
These two cameras at ISO 3200 look like my Canon R7 at ISO 100 (when pixel peeping).
Wow is the R7 THAT noisy?? I haven't tried that camera out before
Cleaner is one thing, but there is better detail retention in the highlights on the Fuji. Subtle, but present. White balance or color temperature was off.
I notice color dissimilarities even when set to the same WB / color temp settings
@@ZJMichaels That is interesting. The GFX in your images tends to be cooler. The Fuji X lenses tend to be warmer. I have both systems so I should compare the X to the GFX to see if the GFX indeed does lean toward cooler vs warmer. The Nikon seems to drift toward warmer in comparison.
Yeah I was just looking at the images from the Z7 II and GFX 50S II again earlier and playing around with WB and other settings in Lightroom... There's definitely a color difference, even when settings are identical. It's not super drastic or anything, but it's definitely there. The GFX files looked a bit better in my opinion.
@@ZJMichaels the fact that the Fuji zoom lens holds up against the nikon prime is pretty remarkable
…actually is comparing two different formats…anyway what about this Nikon with the XT5…?
issue im having is that the Z7mk2 is $2599 body only right now, the Fuji is $3,699 with a kit Lens!. I dont do any action photography so the Fuji is very tempting.
hi i have shoot the gfx 50sii for two years now, Fuji doesn't make a "kit" lens. :) the 35-70mm is a very good lens! Sharp, clean lots of contrast, the only thing it doesn't have is an aperture ring. Oh and it is a 28-55mm equivalent to full frame. Great lens and great camera! Just my 2 cents hope you don't mind the comment. :)
It might be good to consider what lenses / focal lengths you want to have access to and factor that into your decision as well
The Fuji sensor is now roughly 7-8 year old tech, the Nikon one much newer. If you compare with the Gfx 100S, it would be fairer.
I chose cameras that have close resolution to each other for this particular video, but yeah it would be cool to compare cameras with sensors that came out around the same time
Very smilier image quality, except the Nikon is a much more versatile camera. Nikon for me!
Would be a lot better to compare these two cameras on a cityscape where details of buildings and resolution could show more interesting subjects. These mountains and trees do get a little too mushy on UA-cam to see any clarity.
To me it's a night and day difference between these two systems. The Fuji looks much much more "natural", having a lot more natural and vibrant colors and more realistic contrast.
Fuji all the way for me.
The Nikon Z7II has a low-pass filter. What about the Fuji?
I don’t think either camera has an optical low pass filter
@@ZJMichaels Thanks I looked it up and found it doesn't. The Z6 has it.
If only they did.
I wonder how the images would look up against the top shelf Nikon glass, the 1.4s are amazing. I'm running a D810 and D850. The sales are on and a GFX 50 or 100s is very temping. I can always add to my lens collection in time. I'm a pro of 20+ years, I've been on Nikon for a while, Canon before that and Nikon again before that... The mirrorless tech is hard not to get swept up in but the DSLRs will hold their own for a long, long time. I feel like with the software these days, most things can be enhanced or corrected, saying that, there's nothing like the best lenses money can buy. I won't buy anything than a 2.8 or 1.4 or faster. Once you you've got a bag full of 1.4 primes you won't go back. Thanks for your review.
I usually shoot with zooms because of the versatility, but when I do shoot with good primes I definitely notice the image quality difference. What’s your favorite prime lens you have? I currently have 3 Z mount f/1.8’s… the 20mm, 35mm, and 50mm. They all have their place, but my fav of the 3 is the 35mm
Thanks, but too many variables.
On the lower end Medium format cameras its true its not better than FF. Now try that compare against Fujifilm GFX 100 II or Hassablad X2D 100 C and you never go back to FF!
My experience with the GFX was very poor. Why they even bothered to make it auto focus beats me, simply useless AF. I only had the kit lens but again it was terrible. If you want one of these for image quality save your money and buy a decent Full frame camera that does everything better, or any camera for that matter. The GFX is a door stop.
Mr bellend troll strikes again…. You need to get yourself a proper hobby lad.
You have no idea. lol. I own both 50r and 100s and they are amazing
