Couldn't agree with the point of this video more. We all have to find our own enjoyment in this hobby and then chase it. Nice lookin' minis!
Cheers Scott, means a lot :) sorry I couldn’t emulate your look
LMAO you need to talk to your boy Ninjon - Constantly posting "speed paint" videos that he always takes to display quality painting he never actually stops at the point of the title of the video.
If you are going to do a speed paint video then stop it there, don't continue on and make just a normal video. Too many UA-cam painters do this.
@@mekko1413 Everybody's speedpaint quality looks different, and the amount of time taken per model varies too. If you commonly spend 20 hours per mini, then a 3 hour mini is a speedpaint for you. If you wanna just slapchop and leave it there, go ahead. I personally like putting in that little extra, which makes my speedpaints take longer than most people. Thus, I love his tips and they work well for me.
never listen to youtubers
Spitting facts. Guys, listen to this dude. ☝️
They have podcasts?
True 😂
This Miscast guy knows what’s what
Ok I won’t listen to you. But wait, by agreeing to not listen to you, I am actually listening to your instruction to not listen to you and therefore AM listening to you. Therefore I should do the opposite, which is listen to you.
Nice to see you back. Much as I like and get a lot from straightforward painting tutorials it's always really heartening to see a tuber like yourself admitting to it when things don't go smoothly. Awesome video. And release when it suits you. No sense in burning yourself out in order to please some algorithm and if any follower can't respect that you have a life outside of UA-cam their gripes don't deserve consideration anyway.
The one thing I've always tried to do in my videos is to just be a regular hobbyist. We all get it wrong sometimes or have stuff that doesn't work how we thought it would. Hiding those missteps or issues just makes it look like we know everything and that everyone else is somehow not as good, and that can make people unhappy with what they're doing in their own hobby. That's not what I'm about. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching and commenting :)
I purchased those brushes you mentioned and funnily enough they were asking if anyone mentioned their brushes due to the rise in sales. You might wanna get in contact with them and say what’s up.
I dropped them a message, glad to see their sales have had a spike.
Tottally agree with choosing your own colour schemes, it makes for a better experience than copying someone else.
100% :)
I feel for you, it's a bugger when life gets in the way of the hobby! But seriously it can be a real problem when the pressure of the 'real world' prevents you from doing what you enjoy and this can be exacerbated by the feeling of guilt you get for not painting enough. Add this to the fact you try something new which doesn't work out and it makes it really difficult. I have had a similar issue recently, complicated by some minor health issues and I realised I just need to get back to doing it the way I enjoy.
Always good to see you, it's like when an old mate pops round when he's in the area. Welcome back.
It's a struggle for sure, but one I feel like I've (just about) managed to work around now. It's just taken some time to figure out. Happy to be back :)
Fabulous video. Really appreciate your honesty with restarting the paint scheme to match your style and explaining that you're having to make your new job a priority, which is wholly understandable as it's your main income source 😂
Thanks very much :)
honestly so important to prioritize personal happiness in the hobby, i really like the results you got from the reset, very clear you were having more fun and the model is much better for it!
Thanks so much :)
Yep, I don't enjoy edge highlighting, so I go to my preferred method of dry brushing instead. I like the results and I find it much easier and less tedious.
imo edge highlighting looks so fake anyways. never got why everyone is so obsessed with it
Hey there! First time looking at your videos, and it's nice you had the guts to say "hey, this mini isn't really talking to me, let's restart". The pressure to make the things the way it's given or printed on the box is way too high. But there is something in the video that I really loved... and that's your lamp! Where did you find it? Did you make it yourself? My painting corner is a bit cramped, so I could really use something like it! Thanks in advance
The best advice i was ever told was, "paint it black and start again". Its just paint. It made my hobby so much better
This, 100% this!
I'm so angry i didn't get a notification and now i'm 12 hours late to the party which in most cases of a party the party would be over. Now having missed said party and wishing there was another party that i could attend where i wouldn't be late to the party and hoping the party has dips. I wonder if the party i missed was also a party that had dips. Either way i feel there is need for a party but one that i can attend where i can see the painted models. There are some nice models there, nice one dude
We all know the party doesn’t start until you walk in.
Their aint no party like an Elston party cus an Elston party don't stop
@@ThePickleJar 🤔🤣
😂😂😂
agree 100%, I don't pay too much attention to to conventions anymore. I usually just watch for inspiration and motivation - or ideas. My army doesn't really looks like any other, it's really mine.
Always good when your army is unique, really stands out on the table that way :)
Great video!
Can I ask what light you are using there please? It looks pretty impressive!
I actually use two lights at my painting desk. I have a flat panel light pointing straight down over the entire desk and then a curved LED light closer to where I sit.
@@ThePickleJar yes that curved one looked amazing. I'm looking for a new lamp and was curious what it was like.
Thank you for the video. The final version of the vampire really gave me some ideas about how I'll be painting mine for my undead army. Grey-green, then layering on pale flesh highlights. When my vampire models come in, I'll give it a try.
Glad you liked it, hope it helps with the new army project :)
I love the honesty of this! I can never came close to the videos I watch, and I forget that I am watching experts.
But stepping back, taking a new look, and listening to your gut, should really make a difference. Thank you!!
Very good point!
I also found I watch less and less of this stuff as I heard most of the things already in some way but I know I can never make it look as good or as fast as advertised.
The only thing I can actually do is try to paint more stuff more often.
This is becoming one of my biggest frustrations with hobby content on UA-cam. All the specticle is fun every now and then but when it's constant it just gives a warped image of what we should be doing as hobbyists. Generally, people don't get a new box of 40 minis and then try to paint them in 2 hours for lol's
I really like your title, and to show my agreement with it I paused the ad before the video just to give you a like and this comment (without actually watching a second of the video) 😌❤️
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, even if you didn’t watch the video, and for being nice about it. I hope you enjoy your miniature hobby :)
Great to see you back at it. Also couldn’t agree with you more: do your own thing! Vampire looks great and I can’t wait to get mine painted up and on the pitch 😃👍🏼
I just started painting again after about a year or more of a block. I just couldn't do it. I started up again about 3 months ago and started a new style and it's been a world of difference!
Yeah, it's crazy how much effect a change can make. Glad you're enjoying the hobby again :)
@@ThePickleJar thank you very much, i still haven't even played a game yet (i've been a fan since the mid to late 90's, and the building and painting is the hobby to me at the moment, it feels so good to be able to set my brain on cruise and just paint!
stopped about 3 years ago when I first got in I realized the anti games workshop painters, games workshop themselves, and a few of the tabletop war gamer channels were just clout hunting by spewing a ton of trigger phrases and dead-horse beating arguments ... just gonna make what I want and play what I want. can't trust anyone anymore... hell even the scumbag who created battlescribe couldnt do the right thing and pass along a few bucks to folks who kept the app alive. Literally.
Actually, Battlescribe is only legal because of the volunteer work. If you start paying people for it GW will definitely start prosecuting.
Doesn't mean the creator isn't a scumbag that doesn't even bother updating his app but y'know
The problem is the same with Disney. People hoping to get free stuff and access.
GW isn't the only model company out there.
My armies are comprised of models from various diverse companies.
Welcome back bro, I'm totally with you on painting however makes you happy and whatever makes you happy. I don't play at all so the painting part has to be fun else it's not a hobby, it's a chore.
Glad to be back, thanks for watching :)
Josh! Thank you for the video! I've missed you. You take care of you, in painting and in life. That said, I'll be looking forward to your next one.
Hopefully you'll not have long to wait :)
I’ve been preaching this for a while - “paint how you feel comfortable, trying new techs are how you grow but you also grow from what is already getting the results your subconscious is seeking ❤
Also, you won't really know what you like if you don't try it. I tried zenithal + speed paints, as well as slapchop and it gets through minis fast with decent results but at the end of the day I just enjoy doing oldschool color blocking -> layers -> shades -> highlights more.
I think they have come out fantastic! Well done! What's up next ?
Well, now I've warmed up I feel like it's time for something BIG...👀
I can see trying to learn skills by following other Tubers, but when it comes to relaxation and creativity, definitely go with whatever styles and methods you enjoy most!
Yeah, it all has it's place but you've gotta' be true to what you do
I watched this whilst painting my own Blood Bowl vampires :) Love the new scheme you created - looking forward to seeing the rest of the team done :)
I can't wait to get some hobby time in this week and make a dent in them. Hopefully got some games planned soon with them
@@ThePickleJar I was trying to get mine ready for a tournament this weekend but I'm not sure I want to rush them. Plus I'm not sure I really want to think that hard tactically 😆
I completely agree, other painters should ne inspiration, but not imitation. Do what you enjoy and you will absolutely find more fulfilment in everything you do.
This 100%
Love this video. One of my favourite of yours! (And maybe out of all the mini painting vids)
Painting content shot so well.
Fun. Lots of techniques and tips without that being the focus of the convos.
Enjoy your hobby (and hopefully your job!)
Thanks so much, that's really nice of you to say :)
Stop listening to Warhammer UA-camrs, especially to click bait titles. Right got it. Thank you.
I have been painting mini's since 1984. Over the years I tried many different types of styles of painting. The paint ranges available today is amazing however I tend to stick to the style I came up with because I am more satisfied with the end product. There isn't any wrong method it is what we feel comfortable with.
I listened to the video title and then realised that Josh is also a Warhammer youtuber, now I’m stuck in a logic loop of both believing and then not believing Warhammer UA-camrs repeatedly.
(Bad) Jokes aside, it’s telling that a few seconds into watching you paint your own way the mini already seems to be properly realised. Generally speaking, the realisation that the first person you have to satisfy with your painting is yourself is the key to not getting bogged down in self doubt. I do think Warhammer UA-cam has it place, but it’s less instructional and more inspirational. I’ve picked up a good few techniques from watching stuff but it’s more a case of it having to sit in my brain and percolate for a while before I try a new technique. I guess everybody’s approach is different but thanks for the thoughtful video!
Glad you enjoyed the vid :)
True, always stick to your own ideas, not some box art or recommendations, even if that means, that something might not age as well.
I once tried, many years ago, to break with the "greenskin" theme of certain races, giving them certain different phenotypes, they too were better to look at.
Also who still remembers "Pig-Snout"-Orcs from Grenadier? They actually looked like that for a certain time in D & D, for example, and some RPGs still use this kind of description, mainly OSR type games, but whatever. I don't use Miniatures for tactical combat, since I am a strong proponent of the theatre of mind gameplay. But for players to visualize what they ought to see, if descriptions are too weird, or not clearly understandable.
Aside of that, miniatures are small pieces of art, that give a deeper connection to the hobbies of wargaming, tabletop rpg's and tabletop games in general.
One Dhole might not look like the other dhole because of coloration, or even basing stuff, one with rocks, another one that might loom out of a heath.
That's the beauty about this hobby.
Holy crap I needed to watch this. I was trying to paint an beautiful mini I 3D printed using some method I saw online and it just felt wrong all the way through. I hated how the model looked and I found myself fixing mistakes over and over again. In the end I got so frustrated I set the model aside and accidentaly dropped it while clearing the table and now it's broken. After watching this I'll print it again and take a different approach. This was a great watch. thanks.
I think trying new things is critical to improving as a painter, but one important caveat I've had to set for myself is this: try one new technique at a time. Hobby work can be stressful enough as it is, don't tear your hair out trying to learn every step at once. You, like any other artist, will develop a distinct style over time based on the techniques that resonate with you. Keep exploring, but also keep exploration fun.
This is 100% true :)
I finally got off my lazy ass to continue painting my blood bowl second season box set minis and I’m currently doing Varag Ghoul Chewer and I’ve decided that all of my star players will be wearing blaze orange to differentiate them from any of the teams that they can be incorporated into and also give them much shinier armor like gold or brass depending on the faction. I like it but I just hope it doesn’t get confusing in game.
I missed the best hair on UA-cam... Glad to see you back again!
The highest compliment I have ever received :)
Great video Josh. Glad to see you back. Don’t ever apologise for having to live your life. This hobby should be all about enjoyment and should never be a chore.
It's been real nice seeing all the comments like this one. I was nervous about posting after such a long break but it's been nothing but positive, so thank you :)
I don't think I've ever painted any miniature from the box art. The method you use for the armor is the same kind of method I use. Did a whole set of Necrons using that type of method and it really added to making them look old.
Sometimes I loosely follow the box art but with these I just needed to do my own thing. Way happier with how they turned out :)
I really liked where it was going in the first half 😂 kind of a shame you couldn't see where it was going. however I'm the same as you and love doing my own thing. It feels so much better and adds uniqueness to your own build. He looked great in the end as well
I really tried as I loved how the red looked but I just wasn't enjoying it. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, looking forward to getting the rest done now :)
I just wish the promise of Tartan paint finally arives. One coat, no need to shading or inking. No need to think about the colour pallate.
I always enjoy your videos, and I’m happy to get them whenever I get them.
Thank you, that's lovely of you to say :)
Had to subscribe for the intro :)
Some Tubers are at least honest and critical. I like Ninjon for telling people that there are cheaper alternatives, just a small example.
But often it is clear that people are promoted and do not have a good perspective (after all, this is not a cheap hobby)
Anyway, I "like" to paint, but I am one of those 5 hrs per model types, meaning I like it, but I do not *really* know what I am doing. 😅
But I enjoy playing the games
>"Stop listening to Warhammer UA-camrs"

>Warhammer UA-camr
:P Great vid!
That vampire look great, well done.
And I think the point you made in the video is one thing people need to remember when hobbying. It's nice to try something new,but in the end do as you like and feel more comfortable with.
And no problem, we understand your job is the priority.
Really enjoyed the journey in this video. It is an important topic! good job and nice to see you back!
Thanks very much!
These minis could make a great basis for a Necromunda Upper Hive gang kitbash.
All the best with your work/life/hobby balance.
The Intro tune is excellent.
Great to see you back mate. I do my own stuff, one of the reasons I paint Flintloque and not Napoleonic. Do what works for you.
Such a simple yet effective rule; do what works for you :)
Must admit, that armour looks SICK!
Thanks very much :)
Honestly love the green skin you did for these, reminds me of kids toys from the 90s/00s made from that rubbery, glow in the dark plastic or the green makeup they used in old black and white horror movies
Loved the video, hit home as well, glad you found a way. Model came out great.
Thank you! :)
Missed you mate!
Good to have you back
That's lovely of you to say, thank you :)
Good on you, Brother. I got hung up on a batch of Orks because I was thinking too much about it. So I just dove in, picked two colors for the batch to identify it as a force and then did it. I had fun. And that's what draws us in and keeps us coming back. If we're having fun doing it, that comes out in the results and in the videos. So have that fun and we'll be here when you want to share.
for me, copying box art just takes out the pleasure of creativity and the feeling that these minis are mine. I much prefer your final version
Thank you very much, that's lovely of you to say :)
I love nighthaunts but dont have an airbrush. I tried about 5 different painting styles from different youtubers, even the official channel but in the end they all tuned out crap (because of my skill level) so I went for a simpler style and at least they're painted now. Well most of them.
As long as you're happy with them, that's all that matters :)
refreshing take, i like it :) (you do you bro, were here for it)
:) thank you!
Really good video. I know I've burnt out a bit when trying to follow an exact pro tutorial before, and even when I've finished a model felt bothered that it didn't come out as well. I've had a far better time doing things my own way and actually finishing projects.
Grand to see you back again. It seems apt you're working on vampires, given how work can suck away all the time we'd love to spend on this crazy little hobby! ;)
Welcome back! I struggle with a lot of the same issues so I can relate.
Thanks very much, happy to be posting again :)
Great vid bud! Glad to see you back on the tube!
Cheers chief, glad to be posting again :)
The Problem starts with the Companies, Extends to the Entertainers\Presenters.
Not to be too cheeky, but learn color theory applied. It helped me immensely with my pro career.
Sound advice :)
I'd never thought of green skin for vamps!
The best advice I've ever been given was "keep your audience in mind"
My audience, like most of us, is whoever sees my bookshelf. I do this for fun so the process of painting and getting to the end should be fun; it's not a job.
The problem I have is I have mild spectrum autism and adhd. But it presents itself in my ability to mimic and copy what I see with enough visual information. I need other people telling me what to do to make it click in my head.
Glad to see you pop up in my feed again!
Happy to be here :)
Funny thing, I nearly bought the Vampire team accidentally. I picked it up when I wanted a Dark Elf team and it was a box in the middle of them but my alert son pointed it out as I was paying for them so horror averted. Just can't trust those vampires.
dude, The Pickle Jar. Love the name. gonna follow purely for the name. keep up the satire.
I totally agree with this, don't try to copy other people if you aren't enjoying it. Do it your own way!
I am sick of youtubers trying to sell me the set of models that's not even out yet, the sets they get for free.
No.
They can go to hell.
Yes! I can’t follow tutorials because my ambition is far greater than my ability and I get disheartened. Nice to see you back
Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with taking inspiration or ideas from other peoples work, but if you try it and it doesn't suit your style, it's ok to change your mind :)
I'd argue the title IS a bad title for the video, and instantly makes people defensive and not likely to listen to your message. It should be "KNOW WHEN TO Stop Listening To Warhammer UA-camrs".
" Stop listening to UA-camrs" ok *logs out of UA-cam*
Why do you superglue the models to their bases? Plastic glue works fine.
I painted this vampire team this week. 🦇
They're such lovely models, I'm really looking forward to getting them on the pitch
Good to see you back pickle 🤘looks awesome
Cheers chief :)
I'm just not quite sure why your all still buying minitures. Just get a 3d printer isn't it? As to existing minitures, there's software now so photo from multiple angles, import into UE5 and print them from there? Or whatever? Each to their own I guess but even "back in the day" we all just bought molds, lead and made our own in the kitchen. If you just wanna play the game the models don't count too much but if you are into models, you can print some crazy models with a 3d printer - including computer game characters, entire dungeons or city scenery... But hey, each to their own. But if I was playing warhammer now? I'd just print my own.
hmmm so you spray the super glue actiator on BEFORE you apply the super glued part! :D it all makes sense now
Welcome back, I'm glad you're in a better place.
I really am, both mentally and physically. It's nice to be posting again.
@@ThePickleJar I can only imagine, thankfully. Take care of yourself.
I can't wait for ColourForge primers to be sold in the US; Army Painter spray primers have gotten terrible, and the white airbrush primer is clumpy garbage.
I love Blood Bowl (I still have my Jervis Johnson signed 1st edition) and I've started painting and playing Warmaster (still the best game ever made by GW!)
Hopefully they make their way over there soon, they are my go to primer for 90% of what I do now
I saw a Bloodbowl mini and had to click it.
The video’s awesome, that’s a fact! But the music! My Lord the music selection is AMAZING! I was dancing while watching your vid man hahahhaa thank you again for the great content brother!🎉🤘🏻
Fun fact: I always edit together the B roll footage and the music first so that it's an engaging video without any VO. The VO is the last thing I do. So basically, I make music videos and then talk over them :)
DONT TELL ME WHAT TO DO!! ;)
Welcome back 👍

Well, my way is watching Weshammer lore vids
Glad your back. Good job.
