I started with FDM then added a Resin printer to the armoury and I love using both, for what they are best designed for. I think of the layer lines on buildings as what is capable with 3D printing real buildings today, quick easy way to get sustainable housing or commercial buildings out and in use sooner. If you want to do a sort of Star Wars Tatooine style building just thin some Tamiya grey putty with thinner and stipple it on over the walls. Welcome to the dark side, you are now ‘one of us.’ 😉
having a wireless connection to your lights in a spraycan is a bit of a weird flex but i respect it :P i feel your excitement about painting up some terrain myself, definitely seems like FDM is the way to go!
I've found using filler primer (meant for cars) helps with layer lines without obscuring detail. Basically spray on a few thin coats and then lightly sand to get completely flat (won't work for super detailed areas though)

Depending on the filament, you can use acetone smoothing to get rid of the layer lines.
great video 😎The advantage of FDM over resin is that you also have a tool for general DIY applications. E.g. If you break that little arm thingy in your toilet cistern and B&Q are shut then you can make a new one. You can't do that with resin, far too brittle.
Looks fantastic, especially with the very effective paint job, got me really tempted to get one. If you show us more of the terrain you get out of the FDM printers, can you please include some minis in the last shots? I think that would give an even better idea on how things will look on the table.

I had an FDM printer a few years ago, and it was good for making terrain, until it wasn't. At some point something went a bit out of alignment, or the PLA I had stopped working with the default slicer settings, or something, and it just became a complete faff to get anything done with it. So I'd be interested to hear a few months down the line if yours continues to be a reliable tool, and what life with it has been like.

Fuzzy skin set to a very small distance (smaller than default) can help blend/hide layer lines even more. It might impact connectors a little bit though.
FDM - for a beginners thing, saying what FDM is early on would help :)
Great intro video, would the lines be less if you slowed down the printer. Was that the best print you could get from the printer??
No, I wanted to print on the default settings out of the box to show what you’d get without any messing about. I’m currently printing more of this terrain with a lower layer height and in precision mode too, so we’ll see how it compares
I always thought FDM’s future was in the terrain side of this hobby. Especially since the fdm prints are so robuste. Terrain gets handled way more than miniatures, so it needs to be able to stand some wear and tear. Great to see that there more printers that are almost plug-n-play. That’s what gets people to buy them and give them a go. Not needing to be an engineer to assemble one.

Prime with a couple of coats of spray putty followed by a light sanding. Magic stuff and hides a lot of layer lines.

My biggest time sink in terrain making is design and building up the armature. I love the greeble part and details so I don't really think of that as being a drag. I'm thinking a printer like this would be great to create a base form that you could panel up and stick printed greebles to.
Would using Mod podge be a good way to soften those layer lines?
I hope its a reliable printer for you. My ender 3 is a pain in the butt.
You can’t really send 3 in a row from you phone when your are away unless you have someone remove the last print from the build plate. I’m sure the first time you try it will become obvious. Thanks for sharing.
My missus works from home so she can remove stuff from the build plate for me. I realised I should have explained that better in the video haha
@@ThePickleJar Easy to overlook things in a script. Auto detection of a failed print when you are away is a super helpful feature.
use .1mm layer heights.
Considering that the're on about 3D printing habitat on other planets, why worry about the layer lines. Perfect for Scifi.
