One of my friends opened a record store two years ago. He is open 7 days a week 11-8. Hasn’t had a day off since he opened. Thats what it takes opening any small business or restaurant, But everyone is different. I need to revisit Portland. Its been too long. Great shops! 🎶☮️🎶

Thanks for this. I can't believe the quality of record stores you have there. I love you picking through the LP's . I wanted that Chambers Brothers that you passed by. Oh well. And those stores selling quality components. I can't believe it.
You have high quality stores. I can't believe it.

Just remembered another great old Portland record store- Longhair Music. It was originally located just off the Park Blocks (Portland’s version of San Francisco’s Panhandle)
and was aimed almost exclusively at the hippie generation. I bought most of my earliest Rock albums at Longhair. They later relocated to a building close to the waterfront and like CrystalShip, Everybody’s Record Company and Django’s they just faded away as vinyl was eclipsed by CDs. Sad…

One of the great Portland record stores was Django Records. It went from a little hole in the wall shop to a huge concern, but gradually faded away as digital media became dominant. I knew the founder, actually showed films for his Jazz history class at Portland State, and was casual friends with his business partner who later worked at Music Millennium. Greatly missed by record buffs. Love Millennium too, but parking there SUCKS. Another classic PDX record store was Crystal Ship, which started out in the Willamette Valley, expanded to Portland and also gradually faded away. They had literal piles of record boxes with British Beatle pressings all over the floor. Cheap too. Because of that, I was more familiar with the UK versions than many of the US. Great memories

@@mazzysmusic I was spoiled from all the years of having truly convenient parking there. But at some point the kind folks at city hall decided that local businesses didn’t really need convenient access or parking, so they changed things. Always when i hear Portland i thank of the song of the New Riders of the Purple Sage
I have never been there. I am from Europe.
    We been on the road
Rock and rolling for the crowd
    Three more nights to go
But if I don't find someone tonight
I just won't make it through
I'm going out in portland town
And see what I can do
You know, it's very cold in portland town
    This time of the year,
    I wouldn't mind if I could find
    Someone to hold me near
    And there's a little girl,
    She looks lost and lonely
    Backstage at the show
I'm going up and asking her
Hey, would you like to go
You see I need me a portland woman
I don't want to be alone tonight
I want to get me a portland woman
    Portland women treat you right
    Portland's gonna be mine tonight
We pulled out of portland town
    Almost right on time,
The little girl that I had found,
    Her I left behind
But I haven't felt too good
    Since I left portland yesterday
I'm going back to portland town,
Now what more can I say
I wanna get me a portland woman
I don't wanna be alone tonight
I wanna get me a portland woman
    Portland women treat you right
    Portland's gonna be mine tonight

Portland used to have Tower Records. Can't remember the exact location, I think it was past 82nd AVE. I think it went out of business around 2007/2008. There used to be an old punk record store in the early 2000's called Brickwall. Music Millennium on NW 23nd was fun for free shows. Everyday Music had a Beaverton location. I remember going there w/ one of my siblings in the 1990s to buy a CD by a overseas group called 99 Posse that my sibling wanted, apparently their dance teacher played it in class and they had to get a copy. I just remember it was expensive being an import. Remember in the 1990s Sam Goody at the mall had a VHS you could buy of the Spice Girls naked when they were at their height in popularity. I always wondered what was on that VHS, probably Geri Halliwell nude modeling, LOL. Remember a ton of Nirvana tees and other 90s bands on the back wall of the store. Those tees would be worth a pretty penny now being from the original era.

I love the Portland area and the scenery and events there. I flew up to see an old girlfriend in 2016 and 2018 again. It was the first time I'd ever been to the Portland area. We went to Seaside, OR and up to Multnomah Falls the first time I went. The second time I went we went back to multnomah falls, over to Mount Hood, over the Columbia River bridge into Washington, and we went to see a live performance of the Rocky horror picture show. Then we really just went all up and down the Columbia River and throughout downtown Portland a few times. I really enjoyed the trip both times and was astounded by the beauty of the landscape and scenery. I'd love to be able to go to some of the record stores up there someday. But she doesn't live there anymore and there's no way I could afford to move up there haha.

You shouldn't walk that far from your vehicle with the phone on it in that area of town. 😆 Unsure what the black plastic was about, but may not want anyone too see what is inside when the store is closed. It's not in a good part of town. I don't know if Tomorrow Records just isn't bothering to get their door fixed or if it's a supply-chain issue, but it got busted into by rotten people and for some small businesses, you just don't know how many times you're going to get hit. The owner of Music Millennium is super-nice., but yeah, it's mostly a place for new records as you mentioned. They have a lot of employees and I suspect that the really good used stuff only lasts seconds when it comes in, so new stuff it is. I've never found a 'gem' there. When I pop into Jackpot I usually just take a look through the New Arrival stand just as you walk in. Good stuff there sometimes, just gotta catch them at the right time. Glad you had a good time.

Super depressing to drive by the closed down Everyday Music on Sandy BLVD that closed earlier this year. I thought they were tearing it down, no, it's just sitting there covered in graffiti. It was an old Jantzen Sportswear manufacturing facility back in the 1920's. Whatever products they used back then contaminated the ground and it's a huge job/cost to clean up the site now. That place never seemed like a cool, just a big warehouse to search for stuff. Lots of good memories of stopping by there and looking around. Back in the 1990s it was 90% compact discs, 10% LPs. All the LP's back then were thrift store junk or early 90s or prior movie soundtracks. No new LP's or new bands. Records were dead back then, at least in popularity/consumerism. Not until the mid-00's did they kind of start to come back it seems like.

Everyone can have their opinions on general business decisions, but it's weird for you to hyper focus on one business and highlight them in a video. You don't know personally know these people and your judgement of them without ever visiting the store or getting to know the owner and manager is unfair and you are fostering that in your viewers. They are hardworking and kind folks. Speck's records, a half mile away, is closed more days a week than this store is. And it's an excellent store and an important part of the North Portland record community. Try to have a more open mind, Mazzy! It sounds like Too Many Records is using days off to do other record related events. Consider being more fair in how you frame things. If you want. It's your channel. It just sucks to see so much negativity result from your video.

When this first posted this video there was a comment that they were out supporting the community doing a pop up at a brew pub. I’ve been in retail too. I would have posted a sign on the door to come visit our pop up today. I would have gone there and probably would have bought a record or too.

I hope you had safe travels brother you're probably home by the time you're reading this... And too many records keeping those hours is kind of I don't know I don't want to say stupid...lol but 5 hours a day 5 days a week isn't a lot of time putting into the business. ✌️. And his UA-cam channel sucks he's very arrogant and thinks he knows everything

Not a nice thing to do to a small business. Especially with video, especially with your subscriber size and especially with your influence. Your store coverage smacks of sarcasm and here is the owner, Matt Malena having to defend himself writing the kindest words. I wouldn't be so kind. Sure, it was a joke on your part, but viewers take in the video first and that leaves the lasting impression.

Well I mentioned I didn’t go into the store as it was closed and question any retail store closed during regular hours during Christmas week.
I also said that Inna Godda da vinyl had better sandwiches than records
And that Jackpot didn’t have great used records and the stock is not really for me. And they had a bunch of grey market titles like Dol Jazz records.
I will try Too Many during my next Portland visit if they are open.

I only made it to less than a minute...Then I noticed a vid about Martha Argerich the classical pianist from Argentina I've followed for years. Then I came back and watched more of this. Lesson learned: I've wasted way to much time watching over-ego'd videos by silly record collectors who don't know shit. Even the ones who do actually know something, who cares. I am going back to music and the musicians who make it.
