Hi Dr. Dan, I must respectfully disagree with you about WW. I am a current member and the focus on mindset, as well as sleep and activity, has taken them far away from the olden days of diet culture. There is no mention of being bad or good, or foods being bad or good either. NSV's (non scale victories) no matter how small, are celebrated much more than scale numbers. It's given me and lots of others, a freer and more enjoyable experience, when the focus is health and well-being. Their app has meditations, yoga, workout routines, inspirational talks and a huge library of article highlighting techniques for all sorts of eating, health and behavioral issues.
In case you weren't up on the current status of what WW has become, it's a far cry from the old WW which you were describing.
Thanks for all you do. I appreciate it.
Unfortunately the damage of the old is already done. Hopefully, this acquisition continues the good they are moving towards.
I lost 83 lbs in 2 years on weight watchers and maintained my goal weight of 145 for approximately 6 months back in 2009-2010. Over the next 5 years I gained back about 70lbs as I got fed up with the constant monitoring of my food and weight . I used a liquid diet program 5 years later and lost , then gained back 50 lbs in about 2 years . I think I’m never going to be a normal weight ever again .
I agree with you Dr. I have fucked up my relationship with food when I was a teenager and WW was my first diet. I am 57 and larger than ever. I am now approved for Ozempic so I am hoping for success.
WW gave me an eating disorder and i've found a lot of people who had the same experience.
I started WW 4 months after I had my first child. I lost 57 lbs in 6 months . I was so happy. I was asked to be a leader but had to be 10 lbs under goal weight to lead. So started my downward spiral to diet culture. I never maintained that weight. Still think 2 milk, 2 dairy, 3+ veg ,2fats 2 protein. No wonder I'm a mess now .
What's interesting to me is that it seems there are now WW coaches who are not at 10 pounds under their goal. They are not even at their goal yet. I am glad because those coaches just happened to be ny favorites, not because of that, but it would have been sad to disqualify them and not have so many people benefit from their expertise now. Glad they dropped that requirement, but sorry not in time for you to benefit from it.
When attendees at my local Weight Watchers group put on weight, we were put in the "pig pen" and there was a chant of "piggy piggy piggy". When I look back it seems extraordinary that this shaming was used.
OMG! Brutal!
That has to be one of the worst stories I have heard to date.
I never ever saw that. Ever. I was a teen when I first went to WW and the meeting leader employed me as a weigher. There was never any judgement and that was in the 80's. What a horrible experience for you.
Typical storie here..🤚 I was 13 when my mom signed me up to WW, it was the beginning of a lifetime of struggles , ups and downs and heartbreak..it screwed up my metabolism for life... 45 yrs later and still "unlearning" all the bs of diet culture.Oh, I did learn by heart the number of calories in every allowed food in the book though.. way to go Nat. Much good THAT did me....
Not sure how I feel about WW getting into the obesity medicine game. By doing so are they actually admitting that calories in/calories out doesn't actually work? Thereby admitting that their entire business model is flawed? It will be interesting to see how they spin this. I am one that has frequented the doors of WW many, many times. Lost weight and gained it back many, many times. I am now on Ozempic, and I have cautious optimism that I can improve my health and feel better as I head into my senior years.
I have had a better experience with WW. The meetings that I attended tried to have us celebrate non scale achievements as well as scale victories. I've been doing the digital program for the last 2 years and am having success. HOWEVER, WW getting into telehealth has the potential for disaster if the individual cuts the primary care physician out of the equation.
Medi Weight loss is a great program if any of you have one in your area. It definitely works as they teach you how to change your lifestyle as far as food goes opposed to being on a diet. I lost 38 lbs but have gained 15 back over the last 2 years. I will restart the program on Friday but they now offer WeGovy so I'll be trying it. I did try the Semaglutide for a few months but it didn't work for me because the dosage wasn't enough.
