You misunderstood Ellie Goulding. She doesn't lack personality or identity, and her recent music (starting from 2020 to present) are not that generic, she was sabotaged by her own label Polydor to only producing and releasing radio-friendly music which explained why she is relevant but not so relevant or in other words, her songs are bigger than her name. Tho there is nothing bad about doing radio-friendly music, but her label just want her to stick to this direction to replicate the success of her previous hits which greatly affected her creativity and freedom to express who she is as a person and as an artist. That being said, making radio-friendly music is a good way to make a hit and be famous, and you can still add creativity and personality to it to make it even better, but in the case of Ellie's label, they only want her to be a hitmaker rather than supporting Goulding with her visions to become a varied artist. (Not to mention, Polydor stopped promoting her music since her 4th era in 2020 up to her recent project this year. Brightest Blue is such a good album.)
Also, there's a video where Ellie mentioned that she wasn't allowed by her label to perform her self-written songs, and she is only assigned to perform her songs (usually her biggest hits) that are written by other artist which I can see why you mentioned that "Ellie lacks identity." And one of the stupidest thing about her label is that, she wasn't even allowed to dye her hair other than blonde since her debut in 2010 up to 2020 according to Ellie from a recent interview earlier this year. And I think that her label wants her to stay blonde to fit into the usual white, blonde pop girlies we usually see in the music industry. Ellie Goulding is a very good artist in my opinion, she's just treated unfairly by her team.

Charli is very different imo. Career wise, she is heading more towards the 1970s/1980s new wave pop band where they would occasionally have big hits but stay behind the charts most of the time. But there is a huge loyal fan base supporting their projects along with musical critics.

The problem is that they are just vessels for electronic music. Their big EDM hits are, at the end of the day, their producer’s song where they are just an instrument on the track. That’s why it appears that they can only strike it gold with singles. Because those aren’t their songs.

Interesting hearing this from, what I am supposing is, a USA perspective. Speaking of the UK girlies as a Brit: - Mabel: Definitely see what you're saying, she had a rise in the UK before Don't Call Me Up (with Finders Keepers, My Lover and Fine Line) but it was DCMU and DCMU adjacent singles-Mad Love, and Boyfriend which kept her in the top 10 and on radio play in the UK for a good few years. Her second album, released last year, unfortunately had no hit single and went largely unnoticed, but I agree it definitely fell in the faceless dance-pop category - Jess (not Jessie, lmao) Glynne: I agree, even in the UK she doesn't really have a *fanbase* per se, but I believe she holds the record for most UK #1 singles for a British female soloist (surpassing the likes of Cheryl, Adele and Ellie Goulding), so from 2014-2018, definitely knew how to get a hit. I agree she's not so relevant nowadays, but the stats show she definitely had her time. - Anne Marie: Almost has socialite status over here, but is definitely still relevant music wise in the UK. Has been making hits since 2015-16 yet no UK #1 to her name (she is uncredited on Rockabye on the Official Charts Company, unsure why tbh). Her recent song, Unhealthy, with Shania Twain went Top 20, Psycho with Aitch went Top 10, she's been judging The Voice UK for quite sometime, had semi viral moments with Great British Bake Off and Gogglebox, and she always performs at Radio-esque festivals (think Capital Summertime Ball, Jingle Bell Ball, Radio One in the Park etc), including 2023. Defo still has a buzz about her. 2002 also has over 1bn spotify streams, despite never even touching the Hot 100, going to show how big her hits can be. - Rita Ora: Even the UK is tired of her now (I'm not sure if she toured her new album here and no single broke the top 40). Knew how to make a hit back in 2012-14 (three #1s in the same year, I believe she has 4 or 5 to her name, Jess Glynne has 7), but she faded as Jess Glynne rose. She keeps herself relevant through other means (Primark deals, talent show judging etc) so the UK GP still has an idea who she is - Ellie Goulding: Had one of the best performing UK singles this year (Miracle, with Calvin Harris, I believe a top 5 single for 2023 altogether), so definitely still relevant. Unfortunately like Mabel and Rita her latest album made no noise (debuted at #1, and fell to #87 in the next week, showing that it was just a big marketing campaign driving the sales, as opposed to fan support), but she can still sell out an arena here easily. Essentially all of these girls have had one "hit" in the USA (i.e. DCMU, Rather Be, Rockabye, Black Widow, Lights), but failing to capitalise on that I don't think they necessarily have become irrelevant, their home country is just where they're predominantly loved, and they have, on the whole, managed to expand outside of solely music to maintain relevancy. I agree that, perhaps outside Ellie Goulding, none of the girls have made what would be deemed "non-faceless" albums. Hindsight is a great tool, Raye was definitely on the path to making this video but this past year+ she has definitely carved her own way out, and then some. Gone are the days of the faceless feature to the male DJ for her, which I am glad to see.

Yess that is a great record, I think she got it following the latest album, so definitely still a big name. However, nowadays I hesitate to use the UK album charts as a metric of success. You get these albums that debut at #1 and then the next week are completely out of the top 100 (that quite literally happened this year), largely driven by 7-day record store marketing campaigns during release week, and then the rest of the charts are filled with compilation albums, old albums from mainstream/household stars (including older ones) and unidentifiable albums because labels have tacked on random hits from 2019 in the "deluxe" version, all to boost the numbers. It definitely needs a reform I think. Anyways (I could talk about UK chart structures for days), Miracle was #1 for almost 10 weeks I believe (top 5 for longer, before the inevitable strangulation that is ACR kicked into action), so Ellie is not going away anytime soon. I loved Higher Than Heaven, one of my fave albums this year, though I think it could have been a bit shorter.
Agree with your thoughts, except for Ellie only having one hit in the USA. Love Me Like You Do is 8x Platinum, Lights 7x and Burn 5x. Those are her three biggest US hits and all are solo. Her # of hit albums and singles exceeds anyone else on the list, which is why I don't think she should've been included. Yes, she's "fallen off" but all artists do at some point. This video is meant to be about a specific phenomenon, and I feel like Ellie's a clear outlier here. She's the only one in the video to score a top 10 album in the US (and she's done it twice).

The constant dragging of Ava Max lol. Her streams go crazy, and she is huge in Europe, pretty much everywhere else but the US. And that's because she is a dance pop artist, which has not done well here for a long time. I think she occupies a good space for herself. Just because she's not a main pop girl in America doesn't make her irrelevant.
I don’t know about US charts but Halsey deserves to be here. I know she brands herself as “alt” but she did have pop hits like Closer and Without Me. I haven’t heard of her since 2019 and don’t really like her or her music but I do admit she did have hits globally.
halsey started out as “alt pop” and might not be the most relevant pop artist but her albums have always been kind of distinct from what you’d typically get from the pop girls in this video. she also has a bigger fanbase. her last album came out in 2021 and it didnt get much commercial success because it was more experimental than her other stuff
I would like to note there were also 2010s pop singers like Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato who’s name, though being bigger than their songs, were more ‘meh’ than ‘wow’. That left their songs to be rather dull and ignorable. Gomez has more in common with the irrelevant pop singers here due to the atmospheric music trend at the time.
Hailee could be a pop girl if she tried, but honestly I think she’s more centered on acting (like in the Spiderverse films) because tell me why she isn’t more popular and she has two songs with a billion streams on Spotify? But those two songs have one thing in common: they were collaborations. So already she doesn’t have that much individuality. And for Ava, it’s kind of a mystery to me. Because Sweet but Psycho was EVERYWHERE and some of her other songs were kind of that way too. So I don’t get why she’s more popular
People go after TikTok garbage. If you trend for something other than your music then you'll always be relevant. The artists you mentioned are super talented but TikTok popularity thirst traps and controversy sells. Another issue is ageism and people paying attention to looks rather than music.

Ellie Goulding is a truly special artist. Her voice and very presence is angelic. Lights, Burn, & Love Me Like You Do have become iconic. I Need Your Love & Outside with Calvin Harris are some of the best songs made in the 2010s. Even Miracle which was released in March 2023 charted at Number 1 in the UK for 8 weeks! Honest has a point about her, sadly. During her Delirium era, her label forced her to pursue the image of “mega pop star”, and by doing so, it affected what made her so special… her raw talent that was so unique to her. The albums Lights & Halcyon carry a rare magic… if you know you know. She took a hiatus after the Delirium tours in 2016 because of how badly it burned her out. At heart, she shy and humble. She never felt like she herself fit the “generic megastar” persona, even though she had more than enough talent for it. Her releases in the 2020s may not have reached the same commercial relevance, but Brightest Blue & Higher Than Heaven she proves that she is indeed a master of her craft, whether it be ballads or dance pop. I highly recommend it to anyone, whether or not they know her more popular songs. Ellie has hit per era, has written the soundtrack to countless lives, and literally saved lives with her music. She deserves all the flowers and then some. The world loves Ellie!

I really like Zara Larsson, her music is really great. Especially her second album, Poster Girl, in my opinion. Fun fact about her for all the Eurovision Song Contest fans here: 2021‘s act for Cyprus, Elena Tsagrinou has copied one of Zara‘s music videos for "El Diablo". The last great Pop era was roughly 2008 - 2014: Britney Spears, Rihanna, Lady GaGa, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha, etc. Mid 2010s was still decent, but late 2010s is when almost all songs relied on Trap/Rap and pure Pop died.

I think Selena Gomez would be a "relevant but not relevant" artist if she wasn't associated so closely with other big acts. Being best friends with Taylor Swift and dating Justin Bieber really helped push her popularity.
I wouldn’t discredit her that much. She was a main Disney girl on the most popular Disney kids show of all time wizards of waverly place. She was releasing songs with the scene as well long before she dated Justin and did very well on the charts and radio.

Zara Larsson's first album "1" is my favorite, it has very interesting and distinctive songs, it even has a song that uses a different kind of scale (Can't Hold Back) which is unusual for a pop album, everything's always minor or mayor scale. I listened to her other albums and even though I like them, I noticed the change in direction she took, probably because of "Lush Life" (if I remember correctly that song was released before her debut album). I hope she gets to do song her way because it's obvious her label wanted her to be a pop star with more hits and more radio friendly music, but I'd prefer pop music with personality, I like when pop experiments with other elements and offers more.
Dua doesn't have the IT factor either... what she has is multiple hit songs (mostly on the same album). She seems relatable behind the scenes, but her public persona/ stage presence/ camera card is quite dull.

Yeah, Ellie Goulding is a highly versatile artist with a bit of pop/EDM and a bit of folk/alt/classical artist like Lorde or Lana. (Listen to her album, Halcyon or Brightest Blue). Tbh she is one of the best songwriters out there

You misunderstood Ellie Goulding. She doesn't lack personality or identity, and her recent music (starting from 2020 to present) are not that generic, she was sabotaged by her own label Polydor to only producing and releasing radio-friendly music which explained why she is relevant but not so relevant or in other words, her songs are bigger than her name. Tho there is nothing bad about doing radio-friendly music, but her label just want her to stick to this direction to replicate the success of her previous hits which greatly affected her creativity and freedom to express who she is as a person and as an artist. That being said, making radio-friendly music is a good way to make a hit and be famous, and you can still add creativity and personality to it to make it even better, but in the case of Ellie's label, they only want her to be a hitmaker rather than supporting Goulding with her visions to become a varied artist.
(Not to mention, Polydor stopped promoting her music since her 4th era in 2020 up to her recent project this year. Brightest Blue is such a good album.)
Also, there's a video where Ellie mentioned that she wasn't allowed by her label to perform her self-written songs, and she is only assigned to perform her songs (usually her biggest hits) that are written by other artist which I can see why you mentioned that "Ellie lacks identity." And one of the stupidest thing about her label is that, she wasn't even allowed to dye her hair other than blonde since her debut in 2010 up to 2020 according to Ellie from a recent interview earlier this year. And I think that her label wants her to stay blonde to fit into the usual white, blonde pop girlies we usually see in the music industry.

Sales wise, it is possible but not in terms of influence and popularity. These artists simply are the blueprints of their own. But a possibility is endless tho. I think we need artist(s) within a different lane to actually become a catalyst of a new movement in pop music. Tyla could be the one to popularize Afromusic further but only time can tell.
The problem is that they are just vessels for electronic music. Their big EDM hits are, at the end of the day, their producer’s song where they are just an instrument on the track. That’s why it appears that they can only strike it gold with singles. Because those aren’t their songs.

Interesting hearing this from, what I am supposing is, a USA perspective. Speaking of the UK girlies as a Brit:
- Mabel: Definitely see what you're saying, she had a rise in the UK before Don't Call Me Up (with Finders Keepers, My Lover and Fine Line) but it was DCMU and DCMU adjacent singles-Mad Love, and Boyfriend which kept her in the top 10 and on radio play in the UK for a good few years. Her second album, released last year, unfortunately had no hit single and went largely unnoticed, but I agree it definitely fell in the faceless dance-pop category
- Jess (not Jessie, lmao) Glynne: I agree, even in the UK she doesn't really have a *fanbase* per se, but I believe she holds the record for most UK #1 singles for a British female soloist (surpassing the likes of Cheryl, Adele and Ellie Goulding), so from 2014-2018, definitely knew how to get a hit. I agree she's not so relevant nowadays, but the stats show she definitely had her time.
- Anne Marie: Almost has socialite status over here, but is definitely still relevant music wise in the UK. Has been making hits since 2015-16 yet no UK #1 to her name (she is uncredited on Rockabye on the Official Charts Company, unsure why tbh). Her recent song, Unhealthy, with Shania Twain went Top 20, Psycho with Aitch went Top 10, she's been judging The Voice UK for quite sometime, had semi viral moments with Great British Bake Off and Gogglebox, and she always performs at Radio-esque festivals (think Capital Summertime Ball, Jingle Bell Ball, Radio One in the Park etc), including 2023. Defo still has a buzz about her. 2002 also has over 1bn spotify streams, despite never even touching the Hot 100, going to show how big her hits can be.
- Rita Ora: Even the UK is tired of her now (I'm not sure if she toured her new album here and no single broke the top 40). Knew how to make a hit back in 2012-14 (three #1s in the same year, I believe she has 4 or 5 to her name, Jess Glynne has 7), but she faded as Jess Glynne rose. She keeps herself relevant through other means (Primark deals, talent show judging etc) so the UK GP still has an idea who she is
- Ellie Goulding: Had one of the best performing UK singles this year (Miracle, with Calvin Harris, I believe a top 5 single for 2023 altogether), so definitely still relevant. Unfortunately like Mabel and Rita her latest album made no noise (debuted at #1, and fell to #87 in the next week, showing that it was just a big marketing campaign driving the sales, as opposed to fan support), but she can still sell out an arena here easily.
Essentially all of these girls have had one "hit" in the USA (i.e. DCMU, Rather Be, Rockabye, Black Widow, Lights), but failing to capitalise on that I don't think they necessarily have become irrelevant, their home country is just where they're predominantly loved, and they have, on the whole, managed to expand outside of solely music to maintain relevancy. I agree that, perhaps outside Ellie Goulding, none of the girls have made what would be deemed "non-faceless" albums.
Hindsight is a great tool, Raye was definitely on the path to making this video but this past year+ she has definitely carved her own way out, and then some. Gone are the days of the faceless feature to the male DJ for her, which I am glad to see.

Yess that is a great record, I think she got it following the latest album, so definitely still a big name. However, nowadays I hesitate to use the UK album charts as a metric of success.
You get these albums that debut at #1 and then the next week are completely out of the top 100 (that quite literally happened this year), largely driven by 7-day record store marketing campaigns during release week, and then the rest of the charts are filled with compilation albums, old albums from mainstream/household stars (including older ones) and unidentifiable albums because labels have tacked on random hits from 2019 in the "deluxe" version, all to boost the numbers. It definitely needs a reform I think.
Anyways (I could talk about UK chart structures for days), Miracle was #1 for almost 10 weeks I believe (top 5 for longer, before the inevitable strangulation that is ACR kicked into action), so Ellie is not going away anytime soon.
I loved Higher Than Heaven, one of my fave albums this year, though I think it could have been a bit shorter.
Agree with your thoughts, except for Ellie only having one hit in the USA. Love Me Like You Do is 8x Platinum, Lights 7x and Burn 5x. Those are her three biggest US hits and all are solo. Her # of hit albums and singles exceeds anyone else on the list, which is why I don't think she should've been included. Yes, she's "fallen off" but all artists do at some point. This video is meant to be about a specific phenomenon, and I feel like Ellie's a clear outlier here. She's the only one in the video to score a top 10 album in the US (and she's done it twice).

halsey started out as “alt pop” and might not be the most relevant pop artist but her albums have always been kind of distinct from what you’d typically get from the pop girls in this video. she also has a bigger fanbase. her last album came out in 2021 and it didnt get much commercial success because it was more experimental than her other stuff

I would like to note there were also 2010s pop singers like Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato who’s name, though being bigger than their songs, were more ‘meh’ than ‘wow’. That left their songs to be rather dull and ignorable.

Honest has a point about her, sadly. During her Delirium era, her label forced her to pursue the image of “mega pop star”, and by doing so, it affected what made her so special… her raw talent that was so unique to her. The albums Lights & Halcyon carry a rare magic… if you know you know.
She took a hiatus after the Delirium tours in 2016 because of how badly it burned her out. At heart, she shy and humble. She never felt like she herself fit the “generic megastar” persona, even though she had more than enough talent for it.

When i go back and listen to Under The Sheets by Ellie i wonder what could've been if she continued going down the indie electronic route. Nobody can mistaken she has artistry that down to her very tone that made her Pop songs hers.

One thing I'm sure, your view on Ellie Goulding's music being "generic" or "identity less" is simply WRONG. Anyone who have listened to her albums -BRIGHT LIGHTS, the legendary HALCYON or BRIGHTEST BLUE can easily understand that she is as a songwriter maestro on the level of Alt artists like Lana Del Rey, Lorde. You should have deep dived into her discography before commenting. Moreover she is the single most undeserving artist to be on this list, she is the third most streamed British Female Artist in the world. Thus she is one of the top most relevant artists in UK breaking records after records this year and bagging her another Grammy nomination this year. I can't simply think of British Pop without Ellie Goulding, her impact is damn huge

I love Tate McRae but I feel like Zara Larsson should have been in her position years ago. She can sing and dance and has an excellent voice and range. She is really talented esp. as a live performer and it’s unfortunate she’s not a main pop girl. Her label never took her seriously which is unfortunate. I think Selena Gomez would be a "relevant but not relevant" artist if she wasn't associated so closely with other big acts. Being best friends with Taylor Swift and dating Justin Bieber really helped push her popularity.
I wouldn’t discredit her that much. She was a main Disney girl on the most popular Disney kids show of all time wizards of waverly place. She was releasing songs with the scene as well long before she dated Justin and did very well on the charts and radio.

Zara Larsson's first album "1" is my favorite, it has very interesting and distinctive songs, it even has a song that uses a different kind of scale (Can't Hold Back) which is unusual for a pop album, everything's always minor or mayor scale. I listened to her other albums and even though I like them, I noticed the change in direction she took, probably because of "Lush Life" (if I remember correctly that song was released before her debut album). I hope she gets to do song her way because it's obvious her label wanted her to be a pop star with more hits and more radio friendly music, but I'd prefer pop music with personality, I like when pop experiments with other elements and offers more.

I think the last pop girly superstar we got was Dua Lipa. These new girls sadly don’t have the IT factor and impact like the Katy Perry’s we had.
Dua doesn't have the IT factor either... what she has is multiple hit songs (mostly on the same album). She seems relatable behind the scenes, but her public persona/ stage presence/ camera card is quite dull.
@@Poufkimashoula1 just because she doesn't make a show out of her personal life, doesn't mean that she doesn't have the IT factor. her and the weeknd are the main culprits behind the rise in disco pop in 2020, and dua took a meme used against her and turned it around to shut down the haters while showing remarkable improvement in her stage presence. also, you say she has multiple hits that are mostly from the same album as if that isn't an impressive feat in todays market where artists are used to just dropping one single and dipping because their music cant hold public interest for longer than a few months at a time. keep in mind she's already considered a consistent hit maker and is loved by critics even tho shes only got 2 albums out. only it girls can achieve this, especially on a still-moderately-fresh career

Yeah, Ellie Goulding is a highly versatile artist with a bit of pop/EDM and a bit of folk/alt/classical artist like Lorde or Lana. (Listen to her album, Halcyon or Brightest Blue). Tbh she is one of the best songwriters out there
