Going to Taiwan for 4 months to live later this month. I have been doing some research, the crescent shaped wood is for making a wish to the love god and then you throw the three onto the floor. the side that lands up is the answer to your wish(if it will come true, if you need to wait, or if you already know the answer). I am super excited to go and thanks for the well recorded video

I just got back home from Taiwan and the separation anxiety is kicking so bad. Taiwan is so beautiful. The people there are so warm and very helpful despite the language barrier. I love that elderly people are still accepted for work with no judgement. The transporation system was a breeze! So clean and safe. I fell in love with Taiwan and I'm coming back soon.🥹🥹🥹
Also, just like you, I felt so emotional the moment we got at Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall. The place was so solemn and full of stories in silence. My favorite so far.

This is the best vlog in a long time, if not the best I've seen from you two. Funny, moving, informative, so satisfying (food market lover here), and also the most inspirational one yet. I almost cried when you said your goal was to give away a trip because all you want is to inspire people to travel. Please know that you have done far more for us already.
Your past Hawaii vlogs are a reason why my trip went smooth-sailing this past summer. Then your credit card churning videos made my trip to Bali possible this past February, meaning just 8 months after I returned from Hawaii. I am already planning my next trip and I am again taking notes from your videos. You two are not just inspiring us to travel. You're literally making our travel dreams come true. I am subscribed, I love you both, and I am super grateful for all you continue to do :)

And I really appreciate the daily budget recap. Lisa, I enjoyed your wanting to know your mom's take on what happened when she was young; those conversations are priceless. I am recuperating from colon surgery at home, and you all are chasing away my boredom.

Not sure if anyone has explained the wooden slices in the temple, but it’s called “Bua Buai” in taiwanese. Basically it is to ask the deity a question and depending on how the faces of the wooden pieces land, it will have a yes/no/unknown answer. It is also used to communicate with the spiritual realm. So to get into it deeper, a “yes” or “ji buai” is when the one of the two piece has one face up and the other piece is the opposite face. A “no” or “bo buai” is both sides are the same. And unknown is when one lands in a weird position like up right on the wedge. Hope that helps haha. Also the custard cake thing is “Che lun bing” or wheel cake. 🙂 there’s a meaning behind the cake as well but I can’t think of it at the top of my head at the moment. 😄

Divinity rods/blocks. They are deciphered by the position and contact between the rods/blocks by a reader/or monk at the temple. Just like the dropping of a divinity stick out of a bundled amount in a holder. Those sticks have a number and are connected to a proverb that is already set to be read and understood according to the question asked as one is shaking the container for the stick to fall out of. Questions being asked are always in the form of a request for knowledge internally to self. 🙏

Found this video just now, and don't know if your question was answered. But in the temple, each of the wood charm has a bulge side and a flat side. You first request a yes/no question in your prayer, and use 2 wood charms to drop. A bulge+flat combo means a "yes" to your question. 2 flats or 2 bulges gives you a "no" answer. You can also combo the wood charms with fortune sticks for more complex answer than just yes/no. Basically, you would pick a random fortune stick and ask if that corresponding fortune stick is the correct response with your wood charms. With a yes answer, you can take your fortune stick to be interpreted by a temple translator. Hope this helps!

Really enjoyed your Taipei video. My family and I just returned from a short three day and a bit more stay in Taipei. Wish I had seen your video before our trip! I wasn’t sure if we would be able to withstand the weather and sightsee so much. We left with definitely the desire to go back! Always more food to try and places to see! Good luck with the channel!

Hello, I was born in Taiwan. My family immigrated to USA when I was 6.
I went back to Taiwan for the first time couple years ago.
Your video reminded me of that trip. Thank you for sharing!

    Wonderful video! ❤🎉
I missed the food so much. To the memorial park, I also got sentimental. My family also never talk about this. Back then it was more like, it is a way to protect you if you don’t know about this… truly sad. 😢

Thank you so much for this video. Our family moved to Canada when we were young, and we are planning a trip to Taiwan this fall. I have never been to the lantern town outside of Taipei---so thank you for sharing this part of the trip for us. We have also never climbed the mountain to get the city view. We can't wait to visit again!!

Great video! Taiwanese here (but living in California for the past 20+ years). You hit all the great and fun spots that I would also hit whenever I go home. I was surprised that Lisa had never tried the "car wheel" cakes though. Maybe you have never lived in Taiwan for an extended period of time. They are literally everywhere including at night markets. Those and the "pepper buns" are two of the things I miss most and my "must-eat" items whenever I go home to visit. Watching you enjoy the food made me want to go back soon; can't wait!

$100 a day is a big budget in Taipei (even split between 2 people) unless your including your lodging. When I stayed in Taipei for two weeks I spent on average of about 20-25$ per day (not including lodging) including food and transport.

Very nice episode. I'm an MIT as well ... Made in Taiwan. I asked my 15 year old daughter if she wanted to go visit Taiwan to eat. She said, "We can get all that in Flushing!". She's right ... while the food is great, I can get every single one of those dishes in Flushing, Queens, NY.
